Migrating to Catalyst 2950 Series Switches The EOS of the Cisco Catalyst 1900 and 2820 Series switches provides the opportunity to increase network performance and functionality by transitioning to the Catalyst 2950 Series switches. These new switches enable Fast Ethernet connectivity as well as provide Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. In addition, customers can deploy Layer 2-4 services for higher availability, enhanced security and advanced quality of service (QoS). The Catalyst 2950 Series encompasses the following products: Catalyst 2950 Fast Ethernet Switches The Catalyst 2950 Fast Ethernet Series switches include the Catalyst 2950-12 and 2950-24 switches, which incorporate the standard image software for basic Cisco IOS software services. Key Benefits of the Catalyst 2950 Fast Ethernet Switches vs. Catalyst 1900 and 2820 Series Switches Wire-speed 10/100 Mbps connectivity in 12- and 24-port versions. QoS at the edge of the network ensures that traffic is classified, prioritized, and congestion is avoided at the first possible opportunity. The Catalyst 2950 Fast Ethernet switches support 802.1p class of service (CoS) classification, 4 egress queues per port, and sophisticated scheduling algorithms such as Weighted Round Robin (WRR). Multicast management through IGMP snooping applied at the edge of the network minimizes congestion and provides scalability in networks employing video. Security through private virtual LAN (VLAN) edge provides isolation between ports on a switch. Catalyst 2950 Intelligent Ethernet Series Switches The Catalyst 2950 Intelligent Ethernet Switches include the Catalyst 2950T-24, 2950C-24 along with the 2950G switches with Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) uplinks. The switches incorporate the enhanced software image to provide high availability, enhanced security and advanced QoS. The enhanced software image provides intelligent services at the edge of the network. Key Benefits of the Catalyst 2950 Intelligent Ethernet Series Switches vs. Catalyst 1900 and 2820 Series Switches Wire-speed 10/100 Mbps connectivity with gigabit uplink capability. Advanced QoS at the edge of the network allows superior handling of mission-critical and bandwidth-intensive applications such as voice, video, and ERP by ensuring that traffic is classified, prioritized, and congestion is avoided at the first possible opportunity. The Catalyst 2950 Intelligent Ethernet switches support 802.1p CoS and DiffServ Code Point (DSCP) classification based on Layer 2-4 information, 4 egress queues per port, and sophisticated scheduling algorithms such as WRR. Sophisticated traffic management at the edge of the network allows complete bandwidth control to help optimize network performance by eliminating unwanted traffic. The Catalyst 2950 Intelligent Ethernet switches support rate-limiting based on Layer 2-4 information. Security features at the edge of the network permit more effective security by extending the protected border to the network's outermost perimeter. The Catalyst 2950 Intelligent Ethernet switches support Access Control Parameters (ACPs) that enable the filtering of traffic based on Layer 2-4 information. Multicast management through IGMP snooping applied at the edge of the network minimizes congestion and provides scalability in networks employing video. Customers can use the Cisco Technology Migration Plan (TMP) to trade in products and receive credit toward the purchase of new Cisco equipment. For more information about Cisco TMP, go to: http://www.cisco.com/go/tradein/. The Cisco TMP application requires all users to have a Cisco.com user ID. Customers may be able to continue to purchase the end-of-sale product through Cisco's Authorized Refurbished Equipment program. Refurbished units of the end-of-sale product are available in limited supply for sale in certain countries on a first-come, first-served basis. For information about the refurbished equipment program, go to: http://www.cisco.com/en/us/ordering/or6/or17/order_refurbished_equipment_program_description.html All contents are Copyright 1992 2006 Cisco Systems, Inc.
