M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 83 Old Testament Pride Causes Trouble Obadiah 1 Memory Verse God opposes those who are proud. But He gives grace to those who are not. (I Peter 5:5 NIrV) Goals 1. Understand that Obadiah was giving Edom bad news. 2. Recognize that the people of Edom were proud. 3. Learn that Edom did harmful things to the Israelites. 4. Understand that God punished the people of Edom. Last week we learned that because of their sin, God sent Amos to tell Israel that He would punish them. The people of Israel did not care about the bad news they received. God showed Amos a plumb line to show how Israel had sinned against Him. God punished Israel, but then God promised to forgive and to restore Israel. Read the Bible READ: Obadiah 1:1-15 15 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Begin With Prayer God also spoke through a man named Obadiah. He was a prophet telling the people what God said. Obadiah had something to tell the people. The people of Edom were descendants of Esau. Jacob and Esau were brothers. (Genesis 25:26) God was pronouncing judgment against the people of Edom. Your proud heart has tricked you. So you say to yourself, 'No one can bring me down to the ground.' (Obadiah 1:1-5) God declared to them that the things they thought were important would be stolen. Their wise men would be destroyed. God announced that everything would be taken from them. They would not know it, but their friends would trick them and set traps for them. (Obadiah 1:6-9) God accused them. You did harmful things to your brothers, the people of Jacob. (Obadiah 1:10) You may remember that Jacob became Israel. (Genesis 32:38) The twelve tribes of Israel were descendants of Jacob. (Genesis 49) God said that during the time of trouble Edom did nothing to help their brothers. The people of Judah were destroyed and they were happy about it. Not only that, but they stole from them. They handed them over to their enemies. (Obadiah 1:11-14) God proclaimed, The day of the Lord is near. God told them that they would be paid back for what they had done. (Obadiah 1:15 NIV) God did not like the fact that the people of Edom were proud. He told the people that those who felt proud and thought they were better than Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 83 Page 2

Pride Causes Problems Bible Facts 1. Obadiah was God s prophet. 2. The people of Edom were descendants of Esau. 3. The people were proud. 4. God punished the people of Edom. others would be made low. God would take care of those who did wrong things. God totally destroyed these people (Edomites). (Obadiah 1:16) What does it mean to be proud or to have pride? This kind of pride is a feeling of being better or superior. It shows up in the way that people treat others. When someone has an attitude that they are too good to do something or think that they are better than others, they have a prideful attitude. God doesn t like this. "God opposes those who are proud. But he gives grace to those who are not. So don't be proud. Put yourselves under God's mighty hand. Then he will honor you at the right time. (I Peter 5:5-6 NIrV) God sent Jesus because He wants us to know that we are special and He loves us. We should never think of ourselves as better than anyone else, but be like a servant and help everyone we meet. (Philippians 2:3) He also wants us to love others and treat everyone with respect. (Ephesians 4:29-32) Review 1. Who was Obadiah? (Obadiah was God s prophet.) 2. Who were the people of Edom? (The people of Edom were descendants of Esau.) 3. What did the people do? (The people were proud, and they did harmful things to the Israelites.) 4. What did God do? (God punished the people of Edom.) Do You Know Jesus? God sent Jesus because He loves us. (John 3:16) He wants us to be with Him in heaven forever. If we invite Jesus to be a part of our lives He will come. (Romans 10:9-10) If you would like to know more about inviting Jesus into your heart, talk to your teacher. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to show us He loves us. 3. Ask God to help you turn from your pride. (Be humble.) 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to turn from their pride. (Be humble.) Application Obadiah, God s prophet, was giving Edom bad news. The people of Edom were proud. Edom did harmful things to the Israelites. God punished the people of Edom. The Bible teaches us that, God opposes those who are proud. But He gives grace to those who are not. Learning Activities Memory verse activity Make a necklace with yarn and thick paper. Cut out stars. Write Caught Doing Good on each star. Have the children write the verse on the opposite side of the star. Test your memory Give a handout with verses on pride and humility. After the lesson, read the verses and talk about what God wants from us. Taste activity Bring sugar cookies and write messages on the cookies (Great!, Good job!, Good helper!, etc.) Read the message to each child as they take their cookie. You may put cookies in snack zip lock baggies and put stickers on the baggies. Think about it Obadiah had to give the people of Edom bad news. God would punish them. Talk about how Obadiah might have felt. God told the people of Edom they were proud. Talk about how God opposes the proud. Touch activity Make hearts out of construction paper. Hide the hearts and let the children look for them. Bring stickers. When you see the children being kind, give them a sticker. Ask each child to make a list of things they can do to be kind to others. Ask them to take their list home. Ask them to ask for God s help so they can be kind. Run and play Divide into teams. Each team member must run against a member of the opposite team to get a balloon. Beforehand, cut out stars and write something nice about each student. Blow up balloons and put the stars inside the balloons. Each child will choose a partner. They will pop the balloons and read what the star says to their partner. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants us to turn from our pride. Sing Sing, Humble Thyself, Create in Me, or another song related to the story. Reach out During class, pray (by name) for kids who did not come today. Ask the children to go with you to deliver the necklace to those who were absent. Pray with the children who were absent.
