you can make a difference Your fundraising will help improve the lives of people affected by Parkinson s. It s wonderful what you can do. When you raise funds for us, you can be sure we will spend your money wisely. The best way for us to fund the range of work we do is to receive donations that we can spend where we need to, when we need to. 25 will enable us to run an education session in a hospital ward. 75 150 will enable a half-day is enough to fund a Parkinson s nurse-led Parkinson s nurse for clinic in the community. a day. 500 is enough to fund a Parkinson s nurse for 25 hours. 1,000 could fund a cuttingedge research project for a week. 4 5

WHO WE ARE WHAT WE DO Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson s. Because we re here, no one has to face Parkinson s alone. We bring people with Parkinson s, their carers and families together via our network of local groups, our website and free confidential helpline. Specialist nurses, our supporters and staff provide information and training on every aspect of Parkinson s. As the UK s Parkinson s support and research charity we re leading the work to find a cure, and we re closer than ever. We also campaign to change attitudes and demand better services. Our work is totally dependent on donations. Together we can find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson s. Without the generosity of people like you, our work would not be possible. Supporters and volunteers are as vital to us as researchers and nurses. Here s how we ll spend your money. Research We fund groundbreaking research to advance our understanding of Parkinson s and what causes it. Our research also helps us to find new and better treatments to improve life for people living with Parkinson s. We re determined to overcome the symptoms and find a cure as quickly as we can. Friendship and support We offer friendship and support to everyone living with Parkinson s, their families and carers via our network of local groups across the UK. Information We provide information and support through our UK-wide team of information and support workers, our confidential helpline 0808 800 0303, our website parkinsons.org.uk and our publications. We offer training and develop resources for health and social care professionals to help improve services for people affected by Parkinson s. Campaigning We campaign to make sure people living with Parkinson s are treated fairly, with access to the support they need. We want everyone to get high-quality health and social care, including help from a Parkinson s nurse. We also improve understanding of Parkinson s by changing attitudes and challenging myths. 7

YOUR SPONSORSHIP Sponsorship forms If you are taking part in one of our sponsored walks, using a sponsorship form is a great way to get started. Here are some tips to maximise what you can raise. Be confident don t be afraid to ask for donations. Tell people what you re doing and why. Try to collect your donations up front. It will save you having to chase people afterwards. Get a generous donor at the top of the form as this will encourage others to be generous too. Sponsorship form Name...is taking part in... Home address... Postcode... GET ONLINE Setting up an online fundraising page is a really simple way to boost your fundraising. Here s why: You can read messages from your supporters and see how much they ve sponsored you. It s a great motivation! It s hassle free people donate by card to a secure site, so you don t have to collect the money. You can set up an automatic reply that thanks your supporters instantly. You can reach lots of people even friends on the other side of the world. How to set up your page We work with two websites: www.justgiving.com/parkinsons and www.virginmoneygiving.com/ charities/parkinsonsuk Both are easy to use but work slightly differently. Have a look at both and decide which one you prefer, then just follow the step by step instructions it s a really easy way to get online. The more people who see your site, the more money you could raise to help people living with Parkinson s. Here are some things that can help. Make it personal tell people what you re doing and why. Your story will motivate people to donate. Tell people how their money will help. You can see some examples of this on page 5. Add a photo of yourself. Update your page regularly with news on your preparations and your progress towards your target. When you ve completed your walk, add something about how well it all went. Email the link to your webpage to everyone in your contacts list. Add the address of your webpage to your email signature everyone you contact could become a sponsor. If you re on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, you can post the link to your page. Don t forget to use @parkinsonsuk Connect with us facebook.com/parkinsonsuk twitter.com/parkinsonsuk Arthur s 4-mile walk around Beningbrough Hall Arthur Sanderson walked 4 miles around the grounds of Beningbrough Hall with his family. He raised more than 600 through his online giving page. I had just been diagnosed with Parkinson s. I ve always been a keen walker, so when the news came that there would be a 4-mile sponsored walk round the lovely grounds of Beningbrough Hall we decided to sign up as a family. Having an online giving page made it really easy for friends, members of my extended family and fellow-members of the Rotary Club of York Ainsty to donate and I was able to raise more than 600. 10 11
