3 INTRODUCTION The PASSIVE-1 expands on the core audio control capabilities of the venerable M-Patch 2, with four selectable signal sources, USB I/O, talkback with built-in condenser microphone, ducking, mute, mono summing and dual independent headphone amplifiers. Featuring entirely passive operation from signal input to output, the PASSIVE-1 delivers the purest signal path possible, giving you clean, transparent sound with no added audio artifacts or coloration. PASSIVE-1 allows you to connect multiple input signals, route them to various destinations, and control their levels via rotary volume attenuators. The PASSIVE-1 an ideal centerpiece for monitor control in home, professional, and project studio applications. As it is a passive attenuator, we recommend you set the volume knob in the maximum position, and attenuate the volume down to the desired listening level. 3.1 Unboxing Your SM Pro Audio PASSIVE-1 was carefully packed in the factory and the packaging was designed to protect the unit from rough handling. Nevertheless, we recommend that you carefully examine the packaging and its contents for any signs of physical damage, which may have occurred in transit. If the unit is damaged, please do not return it to us, but notify your dealer and the shipping company immediately, otherwise claims for damage or replacement may not be granted. Shipping claims must be made by the consignee. SM Pro Audio Page 5 of 15 PASSIVE-1 Manual

4 CONNECTIONS (rear panel) 4.1 Mains Power The PASSIVE-1 includes a 9V mains power supply. Power to the PASSIVE-1 is only required if you wish to use the headphone amplifiers or talkback features. The power LED on the front panel (to the left of the volume knob) will illuminate when the external power supply is connected and mains power is present. Note: Mains power is not required for the audio signal path. All passive attenuation functions operate fully without the connection of the power supply. This enables full portable use of the PASSIVE-1 without restriction. Please make sure your mains voltage is compatible with the provided adaptor. 4.2 Sources (Inputs) Sources is the description of the 4 input connectors. Source A is the stereo RCA inputs Sources B and C are the 6.5mm or ¼ inch stereo input jacks Source D is the USB input. The USB input has a built in Legacy compatible driver for simple plug & play operation. The USB input does not need mains power to operate. An ASIO driver is also available for download from our website. SM Pro Audio Page 6 of 15 PASSIVE-1 manual

4.3 Outputs Outputs is the description of the 4 output connectors. They are line level signal for plugging in your active studio monitors or to the inputs of a power amplifier that is driving your passive monitors. Outputs A and B are the stereo 6.5mm or ¼ inch jacks Output 2T (2 Track) is the 6.5mm stereo output that includes the talkback signal Source D is the USB output with Legacy driver built in. USB does not need mains power to operate. USB output always records what is selected on the MAIN SOURCE input. 4.4 Footswitch (Talkback Control) Plug a 6.5mm or ¼ inch jack footswitch into this socket. Pressing the footswitch initiates handsfree activation of the talkback feature. SM Pro Audio Page 7 of 15 PASSIVE-1 Manual

This is helpful to allow discussion without having to change the position of the volume knob. 5.4 Mute Activate this switch to mute the signal from the outputs. 5.5 Mono Activate this switch to listen to the audio outputs in monophonic mode. This combines the stereo audio signal into a monophonic signal, which helps to check for any phase cancellation issues in the stereo signal. 5.6 Volume As it is a passive attenuator, start with the volume knob in the MAX position, and attenuate the volume down to the desired listening level.. SM Pro Audio Page 9 of 15 PASSIVE-1 Manual

Both can be selected simultaneously. SM Pro Audio Page 10 of 15 PASSIVE-1 manual
