Baptism Presentation and examination of candidates for baptism Deacon 1 Will the candidates for baptism and their sponsors come forward. Turn to page one in the baptism booklets. Deacon 2 helps get the candidates and their sponsors on the solea. Each candidate is introduced separately. For those candidates who ARE speaking for themselves: Deacon 1 Present your candidate(s) for baptism. Sponsors (all sponsors say together) I present for baptism. Candidate I do. Do you wish to be baptized? For those candidates NOT speaking for themselves: Deacon 1 Present your child for baptism. Sponsors (all sponsors say together) I present for baptism. Sponsors The Church receives these children with joy. Today we are trusting God for their growth in faith. Sponsors In baptism these children begin their journey in faith. Will you care for them, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ s Church? I will. To the whole congregation: Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism Jesus is calling us all to follow in his way of loving service. of God, will you welcome these children/candidates (this child/candidate) and uphold them (him/her) in their (his/her) life in Christ? We will. In baptism, God calls us into his marvelous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you embrace Christ s love? Do you turn away from evil? I turn away from evil. Those who are baptized are called to worship and serve God. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God's help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and forgive others as you are forgiven? I will, with God's help. Will you proclaim by word and action the good news of God in Christ? I will, with God's help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God's help. Will you acknowledge Christ s authority over the world, by praying for leaders, by defending the weak, and by seeking peace and justice? I will, with God's help. Keep your place in the book so that we may finish singing together. Please stand and sing page 4. Deacon 2 For all God s friends, that we may shine with truth and love so that people everywhere may know God and be drawn to friendship with God, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon 1 For, whom we baptize today, that they (he/she) may continually grow in love and friendship with God, growing brighter and brighter as they (he/she) turn(s) into the image that they(he/she) reflect(s), let us pray to the Lord. For salvation and peace for the dead, and comfort for mourners, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon 2 That God will raise us with Christ out of the death of sin, and fill our whole lives with the joy of the resurrection, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon 2 That Christ will bring us to share in his wedding feast, where with Mary, his mother, with Gregory of Nyssa, and all his saints, we may enjoy his love without end, let us pray to the Lord. God of mercy and love, new birth by water and the spirit is a gift, a gift none can take away; grant that your servant(s) may grow into the fullness of Christ. Fill them with the joy of your presence. Increase in them the fruit of your Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of love, patience and gentleness, the spirit of wonder and true holiness. Make sure and bring your baptism booklet. The step is very simple; if you ll look at all of us up here, we will show you how it goes. Starting on your right foot, go right, left, right, back; (demonstrate) right, left, right, back; right left, right, back. Please place your hand on the shoulder of the person in front of you. (Cantor), will tell us when to step off. Cantor When we get to the word, please step off on your right foot and start the right, left, right, back pattern. Spirit as the Christ, to lead us, through his death! and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.!amen! Come Holy Spirit.! We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. The Covenant of Baptism!Let us join those who have committed themselves to Christ in the Covenant of Baptism. Who suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; and descended to the dead? Who on the third day rose from death; ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, and will come to judge the living and the dead.!i place my heart in God.!Do you place your heart and trust in God the Holy Spirit, making the Church holy in every place and gathering the communion of saints? Transfer of the Gifts, Baptized, Sponsors lead Congregation back to Altar-Table. Deacon 2 goes to the side table to get the bread and wine. Cantor leads "As Many as Have Been Baptized".
