LEARNING INITIATIVES THAT MATTER T he Master of Science in Education (MSEd) program at Monmouth University supports a wide variety of options for those seeking to gain advanced teaching and leadership skills. Monmouth offers more than twenty different degree program options covering essential areas including educational leadership, special education, school and college counseling, literacy, and others. Additionally, there are many options available for students seeking only an endorsement or certificate. Graduates of the MSEd program find they are positioned for greater marketability and improved skill levels to ground themselves as more effective teachers within their school systems. With small class sizes and convenient learning formats including online, hybrid, and traditional classroom, Monmouth offers a high level of student-faculty interaction in personalized learning environments. Monmouth University s School of Education also offers graduate endorsements for individuals who hold a New Jersey instructional or educational services license. Post-master s endorsements are available for teachers or school counselors who have a master s degree and wish to enhance their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in dealing effectively with diverse populations in the schools. A post-baccalaureate TESOL certificate program provides training to those who are not certified K 12 teachers but are interested in teaching English in adult communities and abroad. Through course work, projects, internships, and application of content in school settings, students advance their teaching and leadership skills. Monmouth s programs are aligned with state and national NCATE and CACREP accreditation standards. Special Education T he Master of Science in Education empowers teachers, counselors, literacy coaches, and administrators to be able to collaborate in educational settings that are constantly changing. It also allows program students to work closely with faculty members to become reflective practitioners who then promote their own students achievement. Choose from one of four degree programs: Educational Leadership The Principal/Supervisor program (32 credits) is a fully online program designed for teachers and other educational professionals seeking to become school principals. The Principal/Supervisor/School Administrator program (35 credits), also fully online, is designed for teachers or other educational professionals seeking to become school principals and central office administrators. The Special Education programs (30 credits), with an online core of twelve credits, are grounded in national standards and research, and are designed for teachers who want to broaden their knowledge base in the field of special education. Students study evidence-based principles and theories as well as laws and policies that enable them to understand how P 12 students unique needs and abilities affect their school performance. All programs in special education are aligned with CEC national standards. Qualified students may choose from four tracks: Autism is a fully online 30-credit master s degree program that prepares teachers to focus on the design of educational services for children with autism, and prepares individuals to teach students who are on the autism spectrum. The program includes instruction in laws and policies, as well as methods for identifying students with autism, developing individual education plans, and teaching and supervising students with autism. (An 18-credit, fully online certificate program is also available.) Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD) prepares teachers who wish to enhance their skills in working effectively with diverse populations, families, colleagues, and the community. Leads to NJ TSD Certification. Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C) prepares teachers to specialize in assessing and recommends to teachers strategies to assist in remediating the special needs of at-risk students. In addition, they serve as learning consultants on child study teams. Leads to NJ LDT-C Certification. Teaching in Inclusive Settings prepares teachers desiring the skills necessary for inclusive education to be successful and emphasizes instructional strategies, differentiated instruction, accommodations and modifications, co-teaching, and professional collaboration skills.
Counseling The School Counseling program (48 credits) is a CACREP-accredited program that prepares teachers and others who are seeking an endorsement in school counseling. The Student Affairs/College Counseling program (48 credits) is a CACREPaccredited program that prepares students to work in professional positions in higher education. Literacy The Literacy program (30 credits), based on national standards of the International Reading Association, is designed for exemplary teachers who have an initial teaching license and want to expand their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in teaching literacy to all learners while assisting paraprofessionals and colleagues. This program leads to New Jersey State Reading Specialist Certification. The Monmouth University Master of Science in Education Principal Program had a tremendous impact on my transition into school leadership. The small class sizes, the knowledgeable professors, the state-of-the-art facilities, and a rigorous curriculum thoroughly prepare future school leaders for the challenges of administrating today s public schools. Endorsements Bilingual/Bicultural is a 12-credit program that is aligned with the New Jersey State requirement for a bilingual/bicultural endorsement. The five domains (linguistics, language acquisition, developing literacy skills for the second language learner, methods of teaching content in bilingual education, and theory and practice of teaching bilingual education) required by the State of New Jersey are taught using an interdisciplinary delivery system that combines collaborative effort based on the expertise of faculty from different academic schools and departments. Chinese, Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) is a 24-credit program (15 credits of course work and 9 credits of student teaching) that prepares teachers for K 12 Chinese classrooms. Early Childhood is a 13-credit fully online program designed to provide expertise in creating developmentally appropriate assessment and instruction in literacy, language development, numeracy, and content areas; designing curriculum; and collaborating with families and colleagues in preschool through grade 3 settings. English as a Second Language (ESL) is an 18-credit program intended for certified teachers or teacher candidates who seek endorsement as ESL teachers. In addition, it enables teachers in all content areas to work more effectively with P 12 student populations that are culturally and linguistically diverse. Field experience is provided in P 12 classrooms in local communities. Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC) is a 21-credit program for teachers, counselors, or other school personnel to provide substance abuse/mental health prevention, intervention, counseling, and related services. Post-Master s Endorsements Director of School Counseling Services is a 9-credit fully online program intended for certified school counselors who want to supervise school counseling services in K 12 settings. Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant prepares experienced teachers to specialize in assessing and instructing students with special needs and to serve as learning consultants on child study teams. A main focus of the 24-credit program is collaboration with teachers, support personnel, administrators, and families. Supervisor is a 12-credit fully online program intended for graduate students who want to supervise teachers in K 12 educational settings. It is aligned with national administrator standards and capitalizes on a strong educational vision; collaboration with teachers, families, and the community; and implementing professional development. Monmouth s School Counseling Program and Student Affairs/College Counseling program are both CACREP-accredited.
Certificates Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an 18-credit fully online program that meets the current requirements for graduate level instruction necessary for applicants to sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination. Autism is a fully online, 18-credit program that responds to the increased need for trained practitioners working with individuals on the autism spectrum. Monmouth also offers a 30-credit, fully online graduate program leading to an MSEd degree in Special Education: Autism. 18 Number of credits to earn a certificate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is an 18-credit program that provides a TESOL certificate for candidates who are not interested in a K 12 state certification. TESOL candidates are often interested in teaching abroad or as an ESL instructor at the adult level in a variety of settings.
