Starting a New Student Organization Greetings, Morehouse College Student organizations give Men of Morehouse an opportunity for experiential learning. In addition, participation in student organizations aid students with applying many of the lessons taught via the classroom to real life situations. Our student organizations cover a variety of the student interests. Overall the student organizations here at Morehouse College provide students with a chance to stay active, meet new people, and build a wealth of memorable experiences. Students who join student organizations will experience these outcomes: enhanced leadership skills and abilities positively impacting peers transferable career skills partnerships between faculty, staff and other students. Newly chartered organizations will be subject to conducting an interview presentation with the Presidents Council as a part of the application process. Chartering Information Applications are only accepted during the Spring semester. Applications should be hand delivered to the Office of Student Life (OSL) staff member to ensure timely receipt. Do not slide applications under the office door before or after office hours. Applications may not be faxed or submitted electronically. All applications must be typed or neatly handwritten. An electronic version of the application is located on the Office of Student Life website: http://morehouse.edu/campus_life/studentlife/index.html. First-year students are not eligible to apply for Charter status. Organizations must submit all application materials simultaneously. Partial applications will not be accepted. All Registered Student Organizations (RSO) must have a Depository Account with the Morehouse College Business Office. An application for a Depository Account will be issued if you are accepted as a new Student Organization. If you are accepted as an organization, the Business Office will activate your Depository Account status. A deposit of $50 is required to establish an account. Organization presidents are mandated to attend the monthly Presidents Council Meeting. In the event that your organization s president cannot attend a designee must attend in the presidents place. Advisors are required to complete the online training found on tigernet. Faculty members can find the training on the faculty info tab and staff members can find the training on the employee info tab. All RSOs must have 2 full-time Faculty or Staff Advisors. Organizations will be notified of charter status via the e-mail address provided as the primary contact information. Advisors will be copied on all official correspondence. All executive leadership of RSOs must have at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA. All RSOs must have a membership of at least 10 active members. Please keep a copy of the completed charter application for the organization s records. 3
Student Organizations Rights and Responsibilities Student Organizations are entitled to these rights: 1. Use of the College facilities. 2. Opportunity to sponsor on-campus events and activities. 3. Advisement or co-advisement by the OSL to selected organizations. 4. Access to leadership training. 5. Access to the OSL Equipment Closet Resources. 6. Depository accounts. Student Organizations hold these responsibilities: 1. Maintain on file all chartering documents including a constitution, bylaws, rosters, and operating manual. 2. Ensure that activities and programming are consistent with the organization charter and adhere to College policies. 3. All leaders and officers must meet the eligibility for participating in student activities as indicated in the Student Handbook. 4. Undergo annual registration as established by the OSL. How will my charter application be assessed? All applicants will be assessed based on minimum threshold criteria. The criteria will include the following: 1. Submission of the application on time 2. Completion of the application *Be sure to include all the items on the checklist 3. Category of the organization 4. Review of organizations that exist that have a similar scope and focus 5. Organizational structure 6. Bylaws, guidelines, or operating procedures 7. Alignment with the academic mission of the College 8. Appropriateness of the organization 9. Advisor endorsement 10. Proposed initiatives 11. Review of application and interview presentation by the President Council Chairmen 12. Advisor s Responsibility To complete on-line training. To attend all general meetings and major activities of the organization. To travel with the organization whether in or out-of-town when they are representing Morehouse College. To complete all travel forms and return them to the Office of Student Activities for approval.
