Electrical Engineering Ph.D. Program Information Booklet
Electrical Engineering Ph.D. Program Overview 1. All applications to the Ph.D. program will be reviewed by all available tenured and tenure-track faculty and approved by the Chair. The Chair will notify Graduate Services of the Department s decision, and the Ph.D. Program Coordinator will announce the decision to the faculty via e-mail or at EE Meetings. 2. In cases where more than one faculty member are interested in working with the accepted student, it will be the student s decision to choose an advisor after enrolling in the program. 3. The student and advisor must follow the established policy for taking and passing the Ph.D. preliminary examination. 4. Upon passing the preliminary exam, the student and advisor should start contacting eligible potential members to serve on his/her doctoral committee, in accordance with School and Departmental policies as published in the current Graduate Engineering Bulletin. 5. After the doctoral committee is formed, but before it becomes official, the advisor must complete Form Ph.D. 1 and submit to the Ph.D. Program Coordinator and Chair for approval. 6. The student s program of study must be reviewed and approved by the doctoral committee before the Oral Comprehensive Examination, and subsequently Form Ph.D. 2 must be submitted to and signed by the Ph.D. Program Coordinator. 7. After the Oral Comprehensive Exam or the Final Oral Exam (Ph.D. Defense) is scheduled, Forms Ph.D. 3 and 5, respectively, must be submitted to and signed by the Ph.D. Program Coordinator before the actual exam takes place. 8. Within two weeks after completion of the Oral Comprehensive Exam or the Ph.D. Defense, Forms Ph.D. 4 and 7, respectively, must be submitted to and signed by the Ph.D. Program Coordinator. 9. Forms Ph.D. 6 and 8 must be completed and signed before the student is officially recognized by the Department as having completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree. 10. Upon completion of all requirements, the entire set of executed Ph.D. documents will be transferred to Graduate Services for processing the granting of the doctoral degree.
Electrical Engineering PhD Prelim Exam Policies and Procedures (1) Subject Areas Currently 11 EE, 2 AM; courses defining scope of each area and faculty responsible specified. Each student is required to choose 5 areas including one AM. (2) Procedures Stated in each exam: Calculators/None Allowed, Closed/Open-Book, and Passing Grade (e.g. 50/100). The passing grade should be pre-determined and stated before students take the exam. (3) Frequency of Offering Once a year in early Fall Quarter. (4) Policy for Pass/Fail All students are required to pass all five areas. If a student passes four out of five, he/she may re-take the failed exam within one month after notification of the result. Any student who passes three or less fails the entire exam. A student who fails the first time may re-take the exam one more time in a subsequent year. A second failure automatically terminates the student s status as a Ph.D. student. (5) Preliminary Exam should be taken within two years from the quarter the student is admitted into the Ph.D. program. (6) If a full-time faculty member is on sabbatical or leave and does not write an exam, the replacement should be determined before the exam announcement is made. In general, only fulltime faculty should write such exam. (7) All graded exams are kept in the Department file.
