The Sangwine family of London, 75-95 Stephen J. Sangwine November 26, 200

Contents Preface 2 A Births, deaths and marriages 3

Preface This document is about the Sangwine family based on information collected from 992 by the author. The unique spelling of the name is what distinguishes the Sangwines in this document from families of similar name such as Sangwin. The Sangwine spelling has been in existence since at least 75. I started enquiring into the Sangwine name in 992 by searching all the British Telecom phone books for the United Kingdom (at Reading Reference Library), noting all the names found with the Sangwine spelling. There were 9, excluding my brother David and my mother (who still used my late father s name in the phone book at that time). I drafted a letter and sent a copy to all nine people. I soon had replies from all of them, either directly or by proxy. They turned out to be three families in all, and I exchanged further letters with some, and spoke to one or two by phone. From this I established that pronunciation of the name varied. My family had always pronounced the name Sang-wine, whereas others said San-gwin. As I subsequently found, all of the nine are related and my own family is also related to these three Sangwine families. As a result of these letters I was given the name of Philip Bodger, whose grandmother was a Sangwine. Philip gave me invaluable information, without which I would probably not have continued and I must express my gratitude to him for his help and for supplying photocopies of documents and photographs in his possession. Philip was able to supply me with a comprehensive family tree starting with John Sangwine and Sarah Ford who were married in 75. From this inspiring start I resolved to search the entire set of indexes of births, deaths and marriages in London at St. Catherine s House in Aldwych (subsequently relocated to the Family History Centre in Myddleton Street and rapidly found my grandfather s and greatgrandfather s births, producing a link to Philip Bodger s tree. This version of the document is obviously grossly incomplete, but an incomplete document is of more use than none at all. If you want to know something that is not obvious from what is here, email me, and I will try to help. I plan to add more material when time permits, in the form of a cross-linked alphabetical listing of all the Sangwines listed in Appendix A. I have this information on a card index at the moment. Appendix A Births, deaths and marriages from the indexes at the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys In this chapter, the raw information from the OPCS indexes in London is listed in chronological order. It was extracted from the indexes between 993 and 996. The family name SANGWINE is omitted if spelt exactly so, but included if not. It was apparent from a preliminary search of the indexes that there were many entries with spelling SANGWIN in registration districts in the West Country, including Holsworthy and Stratton. These were ignored, but entries with this spelling for London districts were noted. SANGUINE is a common mispelling and any such entries were noted. The table of births data lists the year and quarter in which the birth was registered, the child s names, the registration district, and the volume and page number of the register in which the birth was recorded. From about 93 onwards, the mother s maiden name was also given in the index. The table of deaths data lists the year and quarter in which the death was registered, the deceased s names, the registration district, and the volume and page number of the register in which the birth was recorded. The deceased s age is given from 866 onwards. The table of marriage data lists the year and quarter in which the marriage was registered, the person s names, the registration district, and the volume and page number of the register in which the marriage was recorded. From about 93 onwards, the spouse s family name was also given in the index. 3
