PAPER 2 Part B Reorganising Written Information TEXT 1 Turkish Pop Music The term, Turkish Pop Music does not have a universal meaning as in the American or British pop music, it is very individual. According to Aylin AslÈm the word pop has been misunderstood from the very beginning; it means popular and it does not refer to any particular sound. The tango which was the first western style music in Turkey had become very popular in the 1950s with the commencement of radio broadcast across the country. In the 1960s the pop music developing around the world affected Turkey as well. Songs which were being performed in their original languages started being sung with Turkish lyrics. Later on some performers composed western style music by arranging Turkish folk songs. The Turkish Pop music whish has gone through various phases has just gone into a new phase in 2000s through Aylin AslÈm s album Gelgit. For this album which is the pioneer of electronic pop music, some say that it is not Turkish at all very European. Gelgit which was given its debut recently as the First Turkish album produced by Power Records is described by some as all the songs in this album with their heartfelt and sincere lyrics and enchanted melodies capture one s emotions very well. Aylin AslÈm explains the reason behind the disinterest of certain production companies which she approached before Power Records. It seems like they have become accustomed to certain patterns in music; who sells what, for how much and how it sells are the cliche questions in which they got lost. Hence they have forgotten about the relationship between music and the society. They are not interested in anything new, they are only after money. It seems like Aylin AslÈm is right in the way she thinks. In recent times, a lot of people who have migrated from villages to cities struggle in these big cities living unhappy, pessimistic and fatalistic lives. Aylin says that for these people Arabesque style has become the mos popular music. Producers get rich quickly because now there are a lot of people producing and listening to this type of music. I don t particularly want to sound like anybody else. I want to reach out to those who don t listen to Turkish music as they can t find anything worth listening to. Aylin AslÈm s role in the rejuvenation of Turkish pop music is undoubtedly great. Aylin AslÈm, who pioneered in making electro-pop style music has certainly added a new page to the history of Turkish pop music through her unusual songs. 6

TEXT 2 Who is AylÈn AslÈm? She was born on 14 February 1976, in Lich, a small town in Germany. Whilst her parents were working as labourers in Germany, Aylin was brought to Istanbul when she was 18 months old to live with her grandmother. She started writing her first stories during her childhood years. She explains her reasons as: kids always get bored... I was no different but I thought I might as well write something instead of not knowing what to do with boredom. She took up music while at high school as a soloist in the school band. When she graduated from high school she no longer had a group to sing with. She first attracted attention in the live-music market through her 5-girlfriend-group called Zeytin at the university. The Group first performed at AltkemancÈ but singing at bars was not easy for Aylin; she was shy and sang with her back to the audience. Later they changed the program and as she sang more entertaining and lively songs she got used to entertaining and enjoying herself as well. She completed her first album Gelgit over three years with a great deal of sincerity and bravery. With the exception of one song, she wrote and composed all the songs herself on this album. She believes that songs are produced through a culmination of feelings and life experiences rather than academic knowledge. My songs are about me... I am a woman in her 20s living in Turkey. They (my songs) tell the story of a lonely and an emotional woman. You meet a woman in my songs who is trying to understand people and love, who has worries (concerns) and who is only at the beginning of her journey. 7
