Bullying Basics The Bully Free Card Game works best when facilitated by an adult who can talk with children about their answers and guide discussion. Following is information you may find helpful as you facilitate play of the game. Facts on Bullying: Bullying is when a person or group of people hurts, embarrasses, or frightens another person on purpose and over and over again. People who bully often want to have power over others. Bullying is never the victim s fault no one asks to be bullied. Bullying is not a normal part of growing up. It is learned behavior that can be unlearned. Bullying causes people to be afraid at school and can lead to absenteeism. Bullying can cause people to feel lonely, depressed, and anxious. Bullying does not let students be their best at school.
It is up to everyone at school people who bully, victims, and people who see bullying to stop bullying. Everyone deserves to feel safe and accepted at school. Kinds of Bullying: Physical (hitting, slapping, pushing, pinching, tripping, and kicking) Verbal (teasing, name-calling, using sexist, racist, or bigoted remarks, and making threats) Relational (intimidation, coercion, spreading rumors or lies including through email or phone text messaging, and exclusion) Bullying Do s: Always tell an adult whether you or someone else is bullied. Teachers, parents, and other adults cannot help if they do not know a bullying situation is going on. If it is safe, stand up for yourself. Say, Leave me alone in a clear strong voice. People
who bully often look for victims who do not seem confident. Try to stay around groups. People who bully often pick on kids who are alone. Try to avoid the person who is bullying whenever possible. If a situation is dangerous, walk (or run) away. Getting out of the situation is a good way to stay safe. Be a friend to someone who has been bullied. Often victims feel lonely and isolated. When it is safe, be a friend to the person who has bullied. People who bully often want to be liked by others but do not know positive ways to show it. Bullying Don ts: Never fight back. More fighting only makes things worse. Never join in bullying. Bullying is wrong. Never stay silent about bullying. Speak up for a safer school for everyone.
Overview The Bully Free Card Game is for 2 4 players.* The objective of the game is for players to lay down all of their cards by matching the number, color, or instruction that appears on the top card of the Discard Pile. The Numbered Cards have scenarios and questions that players must appropriately respond to before laying down cards.** Chance Cards give directions that guide play (player misses turn, picks up additional cards, switches direction of play, or changes color of cards being played). The game is over when a player is out has laid down his or her last card though discussion of anti-bullying concepts can continue for as long as desired. *Rather than 2 4 players, you may instead organize a class or group into 2 4 teams. Team members can take turns playing or play as a group discussing their answers as a team before giving a final response to the full group and laying down a card. **In cases where children cannot offer a response, you may wish to lead players to appropriate answers or solicit possible solutions from other players or children watching.
How to Play 1. To start, shuffle the cards. Have each player select a card at random from the deck. The player to draw the highest numbered card will go first. In the event of a tie, have tying players re-draw until one draws a higher numbered card. (Chance Cards have a value of zero.) 2. Reshuffle the entire deck and deal seven cards to each player. The remaining cards make up the Stock Pile and are placed face down in the center of the playing area. Turn the top card over to start the Discard Pile. (To start the game, the first card of the Discard Pile must be any Numbered Card. Select from the deck as necessary, placing any Chance Cards randomly back into the Stock Pile.) 3. The first player must lay down a card that matches the number or color of the card in the Discard Pile. For example, if the card is Blue 12, the player must lay down a card that
is either blue or any color card numbered 12. If a player has no card that matches the number or color, s/he must draw the top card from the Stock Pile. S/he may play the card s/he draws if it matches the number or color of the exposed card in the Discard Pile. If there is no match, the player must hold it in hand with other cards and allow the next person to go. 4. Play proceeds clockwise (unless the first player has laid down a Switch Direction card). The second player must lay down a card that matches the number, color, or Chance Card in the Discard Pile. 5. The game is over when one of the players is able to lay down all of her or his cards to go out.
C H A M P I O N C H A M P I O N The Cards Numbered Cards Green, red, yellow, and blue cards are numbered 1 12. Why Should You Do This? What qualities make you feel good about yourself? Travel in groups when you re on the playground. Always stay close to at least one friend. Someone threatened to beat you up at three o clock? Stand up for anyone who is being bullied. 1 12 Green Cards: Confidence Builders 1 12 Red Cards: Ways to Stay Bully Free 1 12 Yellow Cards: What Would You Do If 1 12 Blue Cards: Bully Busters Champion Cards: There is one Champion Card for each color. (Green 4, Red 9, Yellow 7, Blue 12). If a player lays down a Champion Card and offers an appropriate response to the question or scenario, the other players must pick up one card from the Stock Pile.
D RR C A chance Chance Cards These cards give instructions that guide the game. Chance Cards can be played when they match the color or direction of the top card on the Discard Pile. (Exception: Choice cards can be played at any time see below.) When Chance Cards are played, there are five possible results: Choice: The player can change the CHOICE color being played to any color or keep it the same. For example, if a Choice card is played on a Green 7, the player can choose the color of play to blue, red, or yellow or keep it green. Choice cards can be played at any time. CHOICE c A r D PICK 2 PICK Pick 2: The next person to play must pick two cards from the Stock Pile and miss a turn. (If two Pick 2 cards are played sequentially, the next player must pick up four cards.) These cards can only be played on green.
PICK 4 PICK MISS A TURN Pick 4: The next person to play must pick four cards from the Stock Pile and miss a turn. (If two Pick 4 cards are played sequentially, the next player must pick up eight cards.) These cards can only be played on red. Miss a Turn: The next player misses a turn. These cards can only be played on yellow. MISS A TURN SWITCH DIRECTION Switch Direction: Switches the direction of play clockwise to counterclockwise or vice versa. (If there are only two players, a Switch Direction card acts as a Miss a Turn card.) These cards can only be played on blue.
