INTRODUCTION The Digital school of Virtual and Open Learning (DSVOL) is the culmination of efforts to take university education to the students, initiated in early 2003 through African Virtual University and later renamed Open and Distance e-learning (OdeL). Digital school is embedded in the long tradition of outreach and desire to expand access to higher education. This noble desire is achieved through Virtual Learning environment and blended Open Learning. Digital school is positioning itself to become a centre excellence and the preferred school of choice in promoting educational opportunity by providing quality higher education, training and professional development to meet the learning needs of our many constituencies, through e-learning grounded in the use of modern technologies. This is borne out of recognition that learning is moving out of the classroom and into the learner s environment, both real and virtual and technology is central to this inevitable and indispensable transformation. It is along this lines that the philosophy of the new school in the embedded on the motto; Education anywhere, anytime, at your own Schedule and Place. The Digital School of Virtual and Open Learning therefore seek to provide learning opportunities to students who are unable to take up full-time on campus programmes. The school provides a wide range of quality programmes at certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels through Open and distance Learning modes, using blended learning that combines digital instructions with live tutorials in the following Regional centres: Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, Kakamega, Embu, Nyeri, Marsabit and Dadaab. VISION To become the preferred school of choice in the use of modern technologies in the delivery of quality education, training and professional development 1

MISSION To enhance the quality of higher education through flexible modes of delivery and modern technology for individual and society development OBJECTIVES 1. To provide learning opportunity to clients who are in full time or part-time work, who have family or community commitments, or who are unable to take up full time on campus programmes. 2. To provide a wide range of quality programmes at certificate, diploma and degree levels that respond to needs of the market, through flexible modes of delivery and modern technologies. 3. To customize programmes to meet specific needs of individual organizations or institutions locally and in the region. 4. To partner with similar institutions and organizations locally, regionally and internationally in pursuit of the school mandate. 5. To undertake continuing capacity development of staff to enable them to orient and adjust to new technologies and approaches in e-learning. Purpose of the student catalogue 2015-2017 Realizing the confusion that characterizes registration of units across centres and campuses, the need to create a common updated list of units became urgent. Therefore the purpose of this student catalogue is to: 1. Minimize discrepancies and enhance uniformity across centres in terms of units on offer for students. 2. Foster stability and consistency over the period. 3. Equip registration staff with up to date information authenticated by chairmen of departments 4. Develop a common understanding of units on offer among students and staff of Kenyatta University. 2

5. To customize departmental programme structures to conform to the digital school trimester system that enables bachelor degree students to complete their studies within three (3) calendar years. 6. To harmonize content uploaded onto the learning management system with the units on offer to students. This creates a smooth link between what students get in their tablets and units offered for registration. 7. Pave way for online registration system that would replace the current system of paper-registration 3
