Submission Guidelines for articles in English Van Eyck Studies Colloquium Proceedings GENERAL Contributions should be sent in a digital format (as an email attachment, CD or through a ftp server), at the latest by 30/11/2012 to: bart.fransen@kikirpa.be or valentine.henderiks@kikirpa.be or Centre for the Study of the Flemish Primitives KIK/IRPA B-1000 Brussels All texts must be written in English or French. Only unpublished articles are accepted. The editors may make minor grammatical, spelling and punctuation changes, but will discuss any significant changes with the author, The author will receive a proof, on which corrections can be made. Each author will receive one copy of the publication. Each article should comprise five separate text files: - Body text, including footnotes of maximum 6000 words - Abstract of maximum 150 words - Academic biography of maximum 100 words - Bibliography - Captions (including photo credits) ILLUSTRATIONS Figures should be supplied separately, and not exceed eight per article. Images should be supplied in TIFF format, 350 dpi, c. 20 cm height or width. Tables and line drawings should be in EPS or PDF. Name the figure according to the number to which it corresponds (following the sequence in the text). The author must obtain permission to publish the images chosen and pay any copyright fees.

STYLE GUIDE All texts should be supplied as files with doc or docx extensions, lines single-spaced: - Titles and body text: Times New Roman 12 - Footnotes: Times New Roman 10 1) Spelling - Write Jan van Eyck with a small v, but when citing only the family name, use a capital letter: Van Eyck. The same applies to other names with van or van der. - Do not translate Jan van Eyck into English (Jan and not John). - Write fifteenth century instead of 15th century. - Use as few abbreviations as possible. - In the first mention of an organization, write the name in full, followed by the acronym between brackets. In subsequent mentions use the acronym. In the case of the KIK-IRPA, write Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK/IRPA). 2) Body text - Paragraphs should be indicated by an indent, not a line space. - References to figures should be included in the text, e.g. (fig. x) or (figs. x and y) or (figs. x-z). - Use footnotes rather than endnotes, numbered by the automatic word processor facility (Arabic numbers). Insert the superscripted number at the end of the sentence, after the punctuation mark. - Acknowledgements should appear unnumbered at the start of the footnotes. - Use italics for old terms or terms in foreign languages, for works of art, books, exhibitions etc., and exceptionally to accentuate a word (never underline or bold). - Short quotations should be in italics between single quotation marks ( x ), longer quotations should be indented. Omissions should be indicated by three ellipses in square brackets [ ]; words added by the author should appear between square brackets as well. If the quotation is in another language, please provide a translation in footnote. Use double quotation marks ( x ) only for quotations within another quotation. 3) Bibliography - List full references together (articles, museum catalogues, etc.) in alphabetical order. Only references to archival texts should be presented in a separate section. - Start each reference with the short version in bold (following the guidelines below) and followed by the full version, not in bold, on the next line. - Separate references by a line space, not an indent. - Set titles of books, catalogues, lexicons and festschrifts in italics, but not titles of series. - Mention surnames and first names of authors in full, at least when the first name is known. For middle names, use only initials.

- Set titles of articles in italics, followed by a comma, and in, followed by the name of the periodical in italics. - Set titles of manuscripts and archive documents in italics only when transcribed from the document. - Write numbers of series or periodicals in Arabic style. - For publications with editor(s), the name(s) should be followed by (ed.) or (eds.) and the further reference of the publication. - For titles of conference proceedings, set the full book title in italics, including the date and city of the conference as mentioned in the book. - For books or articles with more than three authors or editors, mention only the first author/editor, followed by et al. (in italics). - Multiple publishing locations should be separated by a /, without spaces. They should be spelled in English. * references to books: Smeyers 1998a Maurits Smeyers, Vlaamse Miniaturen, Leuven, 1998.
