Reference architecture overview Document purpose This document describes the reference architecture of the EMC Business Continuity for SAP Disaster Recovery enabled by EMC CLARiiON CX4, EMC RecoverPoint, and VMware vcenter Site Recovery Manager solution. This solution was validated by EMC Global Solutions Centers (GSC). This document was produced as part of the EMC Total Customer Experience (TCE) program by the GSC Customer Integration Labs working in collaboration with the EMC Global SAP Practice, EMC Engineering, and EMC technical field consultants. Solution purpose The purpose of this solution is to: simplify and automate disaster recovery for SAP virtual environments, and execute a nondisruptive disaster recovery (DR) rehearsal when needed, utilizing VMware vcenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM). The business challenge In today s world, customers face the challenges of restoring production operations in the event of a disaster, and bringing the SAP applications online quickly with little or no data loss. Validating that a disaster recovery solution actually works without disruption of the production system can be very difficult. Additionally, many companies are now subject to audits focusing on process and procedures regarding their recovery plans and capabilities. Many companies have, or plan to, consolidate and virtualize their critical SAP applications in order to maximize their data center efficiency. This process adds additional complexity in the disaster recovery plans. These challenges demand a solution that offers effective, affordable and efficient protection of these critical SAP business functions. The technology solution The EMC Business Continuity for SAP Disaster Recovery solution integrates EMC and VMware products to protect SAP against disasters. The solution integrates VMware Site Recovery Manager with EMC RecoverPoint continuous remote replication (CRR) and CLARiiON storage for an SAP ERP system running on VMware infrastructure. VMware Site Recovery Manager automates the failover process of an SAP production environment from the primary site to a secondary disaster recovery (DR) site. VMware SRM manages the recovery of the virtual machines from the primary site to the secondary site and also integrates with EMC RecoverPoint to ensure that data replicated to the DR site is available to the restarted production servers. 4
Key components Introduction This section briefly describes the key solution components. For details on all of the components of this reference architecture, see the Hardware and Software Resources section in this document. VMware Site Recovery Manager VMware Site Recovery Manager is a disaster recovery management solution for VMware Infrastructure. It simplifies and automates the disaster recovery workflow, including setup, nondisruptive testing and failover. It uses the Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) for integrated control of the replication provided by EMC RecoverPoint and the CLARiiON storage system to make the disaster recovery process fast, reliable, manageable and consistent between the primary and recovery sites. VMware ESX VMware ESX is the foundation for a dynamic, self-optimizing IT infrastructure. It is a robust, production-proven virtualization layer that abstracts processor, memory, storage and networking resources into multiple virtual machines. VMware ESX delivers the highest levels of performance, scalability and robustness required for enterprise IT environments. It allows enterprises to reduce hardware and operating costs dramatically by sharing resources across a virtual environment. VMware vcenter VMware vcenter is virtual infrastructure management software. It centralizes and optimizes a datacenter s virtual computing resources. It provides server consolidation, resource management, and disaster recovery. With VMware SRM, vcenter simplifies deployment and disaster recovery of critical systems and applications in recovery sites. EMC RecoverPoint EMC RecoverPoint provides cost-effective, local continuous data protection (CDP) and continuous remote replication (CRR) solutions that allow point-intime data recovery. It provides block-level asynchronous remote replication between storage systems in different locations. This solution utilizes RecoverPoint CRR with CLARiiON storage. EMC RecoverPoint Storage Replication Adapter is a required component that allows VMware SRM to manage the operation of EMC RecoverPoint and coordinate the replication operations of the storage devices of the VMware virtual machines between sites. 5
EMC CLARiiON CX4 The EMC CLARiiON CX4 series offers innovative technologies including Flash drives, unique UltraFlex technology, CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning, diskdrive Spin Down, 64-bit FLARE, and multi-core Intel Xeon processors. With expandable Fibre Channel and iscsi connectivity and advanced data protection via CLARiiON s proven five 9s (99.999 percent) availability, the CLARiiON CX4 series is the optimal midrange storage for virtualized environments. EMC RecoverPoint integrates with CLARiiON to simplify the replication of data from one storage system to another. SAP ERP 6.0 SAP ERP 6.0 is a world-class, fully integrated solution that fulfills the core business needs of midsize and large organizations across all industries and market sectors. Powered by the SAP NetWeaver technology platform, SAP ERP 6.0 helps enterprises perform financial analysis, human capital management, procurement and logistics, product development and manufacturing, and sales and service, supported by functionality for analysis, corporate services and end-user service delivery. Together with SAP NetWeaver and a repository of enterprise services, SAP ERP 6.0 can serve as a solid business process platform that supports continued growth, innovation, and operational excellence. 6
Validated environment profile Environment configuration The environment configuration in this solution consists of the following major components: SAP ERP 6.0 (IDES) is installed on a Windows 2003 R2 (64-bit) host in a virtual machine (VM) running on a VMware ESX 3.5 U3 server and connected via a Fibre Channel SAN to CLARiiON CX4 storage on the production site. SRM, vcenter, and VI Client are installed on a Windows 2003 32-bit VM on both the production and DR sites to perform a disaster recovery work plan. Two EMC RecoverPoint appliances (RPA) are configured with a CX splitter on both the production and DR sites to replicate the SAP production volumes to the target volume on the DR site. This configuration provides high-availability for the RecoverPoint architecture. EMC RecoverPoint Storage Replication Adapter for SRM is installed on the same host as SRM. Two CLARiiON CX4-480 storage systems are used. One each for the production and DR sites. Storage replication The storage replication environment is comprised of: Four RPAs (two per site), and CLARiiON CX splitter software. 7

Validated scenario Description This solution was validated by building an SAP environment and configuring the VMware SRM and EMC RecoverPoint components. Disaster recovery scenarios were rehearsed (using the rehearsal functionality of VMware SRM), and then executed in the environment as in the case of an actual disaster at the primary site. VMware SRM integrated with EMC RecoverPoint managed the failover of the VMware virtual machines and their storage. The SAP system was started and verified to be operational and consistent on the disaster recovery site after the failover. The virtual machines were also failed back to the primary site to complete the process of moving back to the original location after the damages caused by the disaster were repaired. 10
Conclusion Summary The EMC Business Continuity for SAP Disaster Recovery Reference Architecture demonstrates how VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) enables effective, affordable and efficient protection of critical SAP business applications in a virtual infrastructure. By integrating SAP ERP 6.0 with VMware SRM, EMC RecoverPoint continuous remote replication (CRR) and CLARiiON storage, the solution provides the following benefits: Simplifies and automates the disaster recovery of a virtual SAP landscape to a recovery site.
