I Am the Door Objective of Lesson: Christ is the Door, the only door, by which we can and must enter the kingdom of God. Scripture Reference (John 10:1-10) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. (2) But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (3) To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. (4) And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. (5) And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. (6) This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. (7) Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. (8) All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. (9) I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. (10) The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Truth For Children: I am the Door 2011 1

Lesson Instructions 1. Do you know what a door is? A door is something that you use as an entry to or exit from a boundary or space. Can you draw me a picture of a door? (Hand them each a piece of paper) 2. I want each of you to hold up your picture of your door and tell me where your door leads. A door can lead just about anywhere. 3. Let s pretend this box is a room. I want to pretend that in this box is a great reward. If you follow the one rule that I tell you, you can enter this box. Here is the one rule: All those who did not get out of bed this morning can enter the box. OHH!!!! Now what??? There is a problem. Not one person in this room can enter the box!!! We all got out of bed this morning. We broke the rules before we even knew what they were! Now what???? 4. Since we have already broken the rule to get into the box, what if we got in another way? What are some other ways? What if we stepped over the side and climbed in that way? Does that count? What if we cut a hole in the side and climbed in that way? Does that count? No. The rule is there is only one way to get into the box. If you come in any other way you are a thief and a robber. 5. I am going to stand at the entrance of this box. Since I am standing at the entrance of this box, what does that make me? I have now become the door. Can a person be a door then? Yes, anything can be a door. A door is something you have to go through to get into or out of a space. 6. The only way to get into the box is to come through me. I am the keeper of the box. Nobody else has the key to it, so you have to come through me! Since you have already broken the rule, the only way to get into the box is to come through me. So ask me, Can I enter the box? All those that ask me, Can I come through you and enter the box? will be allowed in. 7. Did you know this is an example of what our Lord did for His people? Did you know in the Bible the Lord Jesus Christ describes Himself as a door? Yes, but where does He lead? He leads to God and heaven. There is only one way Truth For Children: I am the Door 2011 2

to be accepted of God; you have to be a perfect person. Heaven is a place only perfect people can go. That means you cannot have ever committed one lie; you cannot have ever gotten mad at one person; you cannot have ever wished you had another person s toy. All these rules you had to have followed or you will not be accepted into the presence of God and heaven. God cannot and will not accept sinners - only perfect people. What will happen to sinners? Sinners will be punished forever for their sins and will not be allowed into God s presence. 8. OH No! That is just like our box - but much worse! We have already broken all of these rules. Have you ever lied about something? Have you ever been mad at someone? Now what do we do? We are sinners and we must be punished for our sins. God will not accept us; BUT I have great news! There is a way God can accept us even though we have sinned. Someone else (a substitute) can take our punishment for sin. Do you know who that is? Jesus Christ the Son of God can. How do I know this? 9. In the Bible our Lord Jesus Christ told us the following, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. That is great news! We have a way in! Christ is the way in! He is standing as the door! There is a way to be punished for our sins. If you have broken all of God s rules and not allowed to go into His presence and be accepted into heaven, what do you do? You go to Christ! He is the door! 10. What happens if you don t go through Christ? Are you a thief? Yes, you have to go through Christ to be accepted of God. What if you decide you want to get into the presence of God another way? What if I made up my own rules to follow? Would God accept that? No. What if I climbed in another way or cut a hole where I could fit? Would God accept that? No! Would that make you a thief? God punishes sinners and thieves. (There are many who try to enter into the kingdom outwardly, by climbing up some other way into the church of God, refusing to trust Christ, but those who enter in by Christ, the Door, believing on him, shall be saved.) Saved means they will not be Truth For Children: I am the Door 2011 3

punished for their sins because Christ took their punishment. He came to this earth to die for His peoples sins, and all those He died for shall be saved. 11. Did you know that Christ promised that ALL those that come to Him - They shall be saved. Christ pledges His word for it - that whoever enters in shall be saved. Does that really say ANY Man? What does that mean? That means any man: rich or Poor, male or female, bond or free, Jew or Gentile, black or white, learned or unlearned, upper crust or lower crust, hard crust or soft crust, or No Crust ME! You! Our Savior compares himself to a door, so that every time we enter or leave any building or room we may be reminded of him. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. Lesson Activities Draw a door.
