LESSON 2 Personal God Bible Basis: Psalm 23 Key Verse: Psalm 121:2a: My help comes from the Lord. Key Question: Does God care about me? Key Idea: God cares for me! Master Supplies List Pictures of house pets, Bible Pictures of a sheep and a shepherd Optional Supplies You will need the following supplies based on which Application Activities you choose: Option 3: God Gives Me All I Need activity sheet; magazine pictures of food, clothes, people; glue sticks Option 4: Three opaque (not clear) plastic cups, cotton ball
Step 1 Come Together Supplies: Pictures of house pets (dog, cat, guinea pig, goldfish), Bible Teacher Prep: Print pictures of house pets included at the end of this lesson. GATHER the children. ASK, If you have a pet at home, raise your hand. HOLD UP one picture of a pet. ASK, What is this? Who has one of these at home? TALK about how they play with that pet and how they help to take care of it. CONTINUE the same way with the rest of the pictures. SAY, If you have a pet at home, you know that you have to take care of that pet. They can t get their own food or get water for themselves. SHOW children the Bible. SAY, The Bible tells us that God takes care of us, and we know the words in the Bible are true. Step 2 Hear the Story Supplies: Pictures of a sheep and a shepherd, Bible open to Psalm 23. Teacher Prep: Print pictures included at the end of this lesson. SHOW picture of sheep. ASK, How many of you have a pet sheep at home? No one? Not one of you has a pet sheep? SAY, No, sheep aren t good pets to have in your house. Sheep need special care. SHOW picture of a shepherd. SAY, Sheep have someone called a shepherd who takes care of sheep. Can you say shepherd with me? (Shepherd) SAY, Good! A shepherd finds soft, green grass for the sheep to eat. The shepherd finds fresh water for the sheep to drink. The shepherd protects the sheep from bigger animals like lions and bears. The shepherd even shows the sheep where they can lie down to go to sleep! PICK UP your Bible. SAY, The Bible tells us that God takes care of us just like a shepherd 2
takes care of his sheep. God gives us food to eat. God gives us water to drink. He gives us air to breathe. God gives us everything we need because he loves us very much. TAP your chin with your index finger as if you are thinking about something. ASK, When someone does something nice for us, what do we say? (Thank you) HAVE children fold their hands for prayer. PRAY, Dear God, we thank you for taking care of us. You give us everything we need because you love us so much. We love you too! In Jesus name. Amen. Supplies: None needed Application Activities Option 1: Be the Sheep SAY, Today we are going to pretend we are sheep. When I count to three, I want you to get on your hands and knees, just like a sheep would stand. Here we go! One, two, three. ALLOW a few seconds for the children to get on their hands and knees. LEAD children around the room like sheep in a field. Pretend to show them where there is grass to eat. When they are finished eating grass, have them say the Key Verse: My help comes from the Lord. Psalm 121:2 LEAD them to another place in the room and pretend to show them where there is water to drink. When they are finished drinking, have them shout the Key Verse. SHOW the sheep where they can lie down to sleep. Have them whisper the Key Verse. WHISPER, Little sheep, remember that God loves you and he gives you everything you need. 3
Option 2: All I Need Supplies: None needed TEACH the following finger play to the children. A... B... C... Touch index finger of one hand to palm of the other as if writing the letters 1... 2... 3... Hold up that number of fingers All I need Point to self God gives to me. Point up Option 3: God Gives Me All I Need Supplies: God Gives Me All I Need activity sheet; magazine pictures of food, clothes, people; glue sticks Teacher Prep: Copy the God Gives Me All I Need activity sheet included at the end of this lesson, one per child. Cut out pictures of food, clothes, and people from magazines. GIVE each child an activity sheet. HELP children glue pictures of things they need to their page. REVIEW the Key Idea and Key Verse as the children select and glue their pictures. Option 4: Where Is the Sheep? Supplies: Three opaque (not clear) plastic cups, cotton ball GATHER the children. SHOW children the cotton ball. SAY, We are going to pretend this cotton ball is a sheep. I m going to hide this little sheep to keep it safe. COVER the cotton ball with one of the cups. SAY, Now I m going to mix up the cups and we ll see if you can find where the sheep is hiding! INVERT the other two cups. MOVE the cups around for a few seconds. ASK children to guess where the sheep is hiding. PICK UP each cup the children point to until you uncover the sheep. SAY, You found the sheep! 4
