NEED ANALYSIS OF ESP (ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES) FOR PHYSICS STUDENTS 1 Prayogo Hadi Sulistio 1Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas PGRI Indraprasta, Jl. TB Simatupang, Tanjung Barat, Jagakarsa Jakarta sulistio.prayogohadi@gmail.com Abstract Need analysis becomes the major point of ESP course design because it plays as major source of information about the students wants, needs, and lacks. This study is aimed at investigating language needs for Physics students. In order to collect the data, researchers used questionnaire which was administered to thirty students of Indraprasta PGRI University which were randomly chosen. The data was put into three categories; general needs, academic needs, and job needs. The result shows that listening to the radio and songs is the most important need and writing private letters is the least important need in term of general needs, doing presentation in front of the class becomes the most important need and taking notes in lectures is the least important need in term of academic needs, reading written or printed materials related to the job is the least important need and taking training course related to the job, writing application letter and CV and conversing with English-speaking colleagues are the most important needs in term of job needs. keywords: physics students, language needs and ESP(English for Specific Purposes) Abstrak Perlu analisis menjadi titik utama tentu saja ESP desain karena memainkan sumber sebagai utama informasi tentang siswa keinginan, kebutuhan, dan tidak memiliki. The growing of English use globally professional teachers. The first step ro pushes English becomes major language in develop ESP learning is conducting need many domains. It results the increase analysis. It is obvious that need analysis is demand of English learning for academic important prior to designing, developing purposes and in the same time for language program, developing learning professional purposes. Besides, the mastery materials and developing proper test 101 Eduscience Volume 1 Nomor 2 Februari 2016

(Rahman, et al., 2008: 8). Furthermore, as one of the part of ESP, Need Analysis provides crucial information about students expectations, needs and lacks (Salehi, 2010: 1) Thus, these information may help the Physics students to reach their academic purpose and answer professional demand these days. So that, it is important to conduct a research related on the need analysis of ESP for Physics students Literature Review English for Specific Purposes English for Specific Purposes as a branch of English Language Teaching in particular field becomes essential in a wider scale where many professionals require mastering English as international language. Dudley-Evans in (Kahn et al. 2011: 633) defined English for Specific Purposes by its characteristics: (a) ESP is defined to achieve specific purposes of students needs; (b) ESP makes use of the underlying methodology of the disciplines it serves; (c) ESP is centered on the language (grammar, lexis, register), skills, discourse and genres appropriate to those activities. Furthermore, Rahman (2015: 25) elaborated that English for specific purposes is divided into two main branches. They are English for Academic Purposes and English for Occupational Purposes. English for Academic Purposes relates to academic study needs. Meanwhile, English for Occupational Purposes relates to work related needs and training. Need Analysis It is no doubt that need analysis is one of essential elements being used to prepare and design one particular language program. Need analysis in English for specific purposes serves as main resource of information which contains language points that students need to master (Songhori, 2008: 3). Furthermore, according to Kim (2013: 280) need analysis is done to identify what learners will do with the foreign language in the particular situation and how learners might master the target language during the learning process. So that the designer for English for specific purpose program can understand the demand of the student profession and the language use in particular situation based on the student profession. Based on the discussion above, there is one main question addressed in this study, as follow: What are Physics students needs toward English Course? Thus, the purpose of the research is to find out Physics students needs toward English Course Methodology This study used survey research. Ary, Jacobs, and Sorensen (2010: 372) explained that survey research is intentionally done to collect the information about peoples beliefs, opinions, characteristics and behavior. Since the main purpose of the study to discover Physics students needs toward English course so the researcher used this survey research to get the information using questionnaire as the main instrument in this study. Data and Data Sources The data of this study is Physics students needs that can be reflected from the questionnaire fulfilled by the students. The data sources are thirty Physics students from Indraprasta PGRI University randomly chosen to fill the questionnaire. Data Collection and Analysis Procedure In order to obtain the data, the researcher gave questionnaires to thirty Physics students. After collecting the data, researcher identified the Physics students needs into general needs, academic needs and job needs. 102 Eduscience Volume 1 Nomor 2 Februari 2016

Findings and Discussion Based on the questionnaires being analyzed from thirty respondents of Physics students, researcher identified the needs as follow: Table 1 General Needs Distribution 1. Reading for pleasure (novel, 3 8 10 9 - short stories, etc) 2. Reading for information (newspaper, magazines, etc) 3. Listening to the radio and songs 4. Understanding TV programs and movies 5. Writing private letters 6. Conversing with friends and fellow students 7. Conversing with new persons 1 12 15-2 1 2 3 9 15 2 9 10 9-14 7 8-1 10 9 8 3-9 16 4 1 - From the table above, it can be seen that the most frequent competence being chosen is listening to the radio and songs. Besides, reading for information (newspaper, magazines, etc) becomes the second frequent as general needs for Physics students. However, writing private letters becomes the least important general need being chosen by Physics students. Furthermore, the second least important general need is conversing with friend and fellow students. Researcher can assume that Physics students chose entertainment as the main general need for them. Table 2 Academic Needs Distribution 1. Understanding 2 5 11 8 4 lectures 2. Understanding 4 3 11 9 3 fellow students presentation and explanation 3. Reading course - 7 10 9 4 textbooks 4. Reading 6 14 7 3 - specialized books and journals 5. Taking notes in 19 6 4-1 lectures 6. Writing essays, 15 10 4-1 research papers, journal 7. Doing academic presentation in front of the class 3 12 8 1 6 In term of academic needs, Physics students chose doing academic presentation as the main important competence. Furthermore, understanding lectures and reading course textbooks share the same amount voters as the second important skills needed by the Physics students. However, the least important skill being chosen by Physics students is taking notes in lectures. Writing essays, research papers and journal becomes the second least important skill for Physics students in academic needs. Researcher assumes that Physics students may now feel presentation skill is the most useful skill they use in daily. 103 Eduscience Volume 1 Nomor 2 Februari 2016

Table 3 Job Needs Distribution 1. Reading written 14 6 9 1 - or printed materials related to the job 2. Taking training 7 15 4 3 1 courses related to the job in English 3. Writing memos 9 12 8 1 - or reports in English 4. Writing 8 16 1 4 1 application letter and CV in English 5. Conversing with English-speaking colleagues 5 15 7 2 1 There are three skills share the same amount of voters as the most important skill in job needs; taking training courses related to the job in English, writing application letter and CV in English and conversing with English-speaking colleagues. However, reading written or printed materials related to the job becomes the least important skill required by the Physics students. It can be assumed that Physics students have similar priorities to understand how to write application letter and CV in English and interact socially with colleagues in daily or in formal situation like in training. Conclusion It can be concluded that, listening to the radio becomes the most important competence that students chose for general needs. Furthermore, most of the Physics students chose doing academic presentation in front of the class as the main competence for academic need. Besides, taking training courses related to the job in English, writing application letter and CV in English and conversing with English-speaking colleagues become the most competences that Physics students chose in their of job needs. Thus, this particular information from need analysis can be exposed in the learning process of English course. References Ary, Donald. Lucy Cheser Jacobs, and Christine K. Sorensen. (2010).
