AMEN, AMEN, AMEN Fr. John and Fr. Allan encourage you to participate with your Amen in the most vital part of the service the blessing of, or consecration of the gifts. When the priest says, And make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ, with reverent enthusiasm you offer your key affirmation by saying, Amen! And when the priest says, And that which is in this cup the precious Blood of Your Christ, you respond there again with, Amen! And then when he says, Changing them by Your Holy Spirit, you respond three times, Amen! Amen! Amen! In so doing, let us pray that not only are the Gifts, but we as well will be transformed in Christ! TECH TIP FOR THE SOUL Ever feel like modern technology is disconnecting people from the spiritual life? Try this beneficial tech tip for the soul: Set an alarm on your phone for 9:00am, Noon, 3:00pm, 6:00pm, and 9:00pm (the traditional hours of prayer) and have it be a reminder to say a quick prayer the Jesus prayer, the Our Father, or just a simple Δοξα τω Θεω! Use modern technology to recover the ancient practice of continual prayer. Try it this week and tell someone how it s helped you. COMPLINE AND JESUS PRAYER VIGIL Wednesday, Aug 14 Spend time connecting to God through prayer and stillness before the great Feast of the Dormition. The Jesus Prayer Vigil will begin with a Small Compline service at 8pm Wednesday night and you may come any hour thereafter to pray and be still with God until 8am. HYMNS OF THE DAY FIRST ANTIPHON For you are the fountain of life: in Your life, we shall see light. Save us, O Son of God, O Good Paraclete as we sing to You, Alleluia. APOLYTIKION OF THE TRANSFIGURATION TONE 7 You were transfigured upon the mountain, O Christ our God, showing to Your disciples Your glory as much as they could bear. Do also in us, sinners though we be, shine Your everlasting light, at the intercession of the Theotokos, O Giver of light. Glory to You. RESURRECTION APOLYTIKION TONE 6 Angelic powers attended at Your grave, and those who were on guard became as dead. And Mary stood in the tomb, seeking Your pure body. You have despoiled Death and not been touched by him; you met the Virgin and gave us life. O Lord who rose from the dead, glory to you. TROPARION OF SAINT SOPHIA (HOLY WISDOM) Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You. KONTAKION OF THE TRANSFIGURATION TONE 7 You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father. 6

EPISTLE READING EPISTLE READER...CHRISTOS THEOPHANOUS Priest: Let Us Attend Reader: O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. Priest: Wisdom... Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans (15:1-7) Priest: Let us be Attentive BRETHREN, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of your Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8

GOSPEL READING The Reading is from The Gospel of St. Matthew (9:27-35) At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. 9

PHILOPTOHOS NEWS OPERATION LACE UP: Our Philoptohos chapter is spearheading the drive with FOCUS to distribute shoes to the homeless students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. We need volunteers to sign up and help us sort, pack and get the shoes ready for distribution to the schools. There are 60,000 children registered as homeless in LAUSD, more than in any other city in the United States. We will be doing this in the month of August. Please see the information in the Herald newsletter for sign up procedures or you may call Judie Christopoulos at 626-840-7508. Our fall meetings will begin September 22nd. Please mark your calendars and join us for our first meeting of the year. We have two amazing speakers planned. First we are pleased to announce we have Dr. Dennis Holmes, MD, head of the Los Angeles Woman s Center and was the Chief of Breast Surgery at USC Norris Cancer Center for 7 years. Dr. Holmes is a pioneer in the treatments of breast cancer and teaches his methods to other doctors. Along with Dr. Holmes will be Dr. Lacy Le, MD. Dr. Le is a specialist in Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery. Her main field is reconstruction after mastectomy and she works very closely with Dr. Holmes. They will speak after our lunch and meeting so we hope you will try to join us. Philoptohos must continue to reach out and do the work of our Lord. The poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, those who may need assistance. That is what Philoptohos is here for. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me John 12:8. With love in Christ s service, Virginia Noyes and The Philoptohos Board of Directors 10
