Training Manual Hand Held Diamond Drilling - Dry & Wet

Introduction to diamond drilling (dry and wet) Hand-held diamond drilling is quick, efficient, cheap and clean. With quality cores 70-80% of all building materials can be drilled dry. Dry drilling is ideally suited for most building materials such as brick, block and soft concrete. For dry drilling, a rotary drill with a minimum of 900 watt power is needed. More important are the correct drilling speeds (rpm) of the machine (1000-2500 rpm). The better the machine, the better it will drill of course. To make diamond drilling affordable to everyone, Marcrist give you a top professional 1500 watt, 2 speed, machine at an extremely low price. (Ask your Marcrist distributor for details). The DDM2 is suitable for dry and wet drilling and comes with 10 years warranty and 10 years free service (For each service 10 vouchers are required. One voucher is received with every CCU850X core purchased) Marcrist CCU850X cores drill most building materials dry and with the dust shroud, dust free. Only very few materials, such as heavily reinforced concrete, are best drilled wet! If the core drill does not drill the material dry, connect water to your machine, switch on the water flow and continue drilling with water. Select the correct speeds for wet drilling as shown on the machine label. Your Marcrist machine is capable of drilling dry or wet. Don t buy cheap diamond cores. Any machine is only as good as the cores you use. If the core does not drill, the machine will not drill either. Never use hammer or percussion actions when diamond drilling. Always observe the using instructions of the machine and the diamond cores! Diamond drilling masonry is as easy as drilling hard wood. All you need: A suitable machine A suitable core Knowledge The Marcrist machine costs no more than a good percussion drill Marcrist 850X cores: Drill everything dry or wet Drill much faster than any other core Last much longer than any other core Marcrist give you a 3 minute DVD all you need to know 1

Problem 1 - Diamond core does not drill The core does not drill. Diamond core is glazed or has not been sufficiently dressed. Pilot drill or core drill is bent or damaged. Machine spindle is damaged and/or bearings need replacing. Dress the diamond core with a dressing stone or by drilling into abrasive (soft) material. Check core drill, pilot drill and pilot drill holder replace where necessary. Check drilling machine spindle and bearings and, where necessary, repair and replace with the Marcrist DDM2. Check drilling machine spindle and bearings and, where necessary, repair and replace with the Marcrist DDM2. A slightly better core will drill much, much faster and last much longer (up to 20 times). Buying cheap diamonds is not good for you or the machine. Cheap cores don t drill and don t last. Buying cheap diamond cores is almost always pennywise pound foolish! 2

Problem 2 - Diamond drill does not drill or drills too slowly Rpm of drilling machine is too fast. Rpm of drilling machine is too slow. Diamond core drill is glazed or polished. Material is too hard to be drilled Check rpm and observe recommended rpm. If the drilling machine has a lower speed, try the next lower speed. Check rpm and observe recommended rpm. If drilling machine has a faster speed, try the next faster speed. Dress the diamond core with a dressing stone or by drilling into abrasive (soft) material. Very hard materials or hard and reinforced concrete cannot be drilled dry. Switch to drilling wet.* A slightly better core will drill much, much faster and last much longer (up to 20 times). Buying cheap diamonds is not good for you or the machine. Cheap cores don t drill and don t last. Buying cheap diamond cores is almost always pennywise pound foolish! ALWAYS SELECT THE CORRECT DRILLING SPEED FOR YOUR CORE DRILL DIAMETER AS SHOWN ON THE MARCRIST DDM2 MACHINE LABEL. * Caution must be taken at all times when water is used in conjunction with electric tools. Electric tools must be used with low voltage transformers and/or with special ground fault interrupter. The Marcrist DDM2 machine (230v) has a PRC interrupter fitted as standard. 3

Problem 3 - Diamond core jams/stalls in the hole Operator is not holding the drill straight enough. The drilling debris (dust) is not being cleared regularly and is jamming the core drill. The material is damp and the build up of damp dust jams the core. Diamond core is bent (damaged). Your machine is not powerful enough to drive the core. The machine clutch is slipping. Ensure that the drill is held straight and stable. The hole must be cleared regularly to prevent the drilling debris from building up and jamming the bit. Clean the bore hole regularly. If this does not work use the Marcrist vacuum suction unit, part number: 320.101.0150 to clean the debris, alternatively drill wet. Clear the hole regularly of its drilling dust. Use vacuum suction unit part number: 320.101.0150 to vacuum the drilling dust away, alternatively drill wet. Check the core for dents and straightness. Check it runs concentrically. Check the thread of the core. Replace the core. Obtain a suitable machine. The top quality Marcrist DDM2 diamond drill now costs as little as a percussion drill and comes with 10 years warranty and 10 years free service (with 10 free vouchers). Have the machine serviced. With Marcrist DDM2, this service is free (For each service 10 vouchers are required. One voucher is received with every CCU850X core purchased). 4

Problem 4 - Diamond core is wearing too quickly Incorrect drilling speed, or if drilling with water, insufficient water. Excessive feed pressure. Drilling machine is not being held steadily. Drilling machine is hammering. Observe recommended rpm. If drilling machine has a faster speed, try next faster speed. If drilling wet, increase water flow. Reduce the force at which the core drill is being pushed. Hold the drill steady. Do not allow it to jerk or jam. Diamond cores must be used on rotary only and without hammer. Never use percussion or hammer action when diamond drilling. Use quality diamond cores. They last much longer and drill faster. Change from dry drilling to wet drilling; this is made easy with the Marcrist DDM2. Core drills used wet last longer. Material needs a special wet core? Use Marcrist CCW850X range of handheld cores for ultimate life. 5

Problem 5 - Segments of the diamond core are losing side clearance Drilling machine is not held steady. Drill spindle or adaptors are damaged. Core drill is damaged or bent. Material is too abrasive. Cutting/drilling dust is building up and jamming the core. Machine needs servicing, bearings are worn. Hold the drilling machine steady and do not allow it to jerk or jam. Examine the adaptor, extension and drill spindle, and repair/replace where necessary. Examine core drill. Check threads and ensure that the drill runs concentric. Select faster drilling speed (rpm). For exceptional applications you may need a special diamond core. This is most unusual. Please telephone the Marcrist Technical Service Department for assistance.* Regularly clear the hole of its cutting/drilling debris. On deep holes use vacuum suction unit, to vacuum away the cutting/drilling debris/ dust. Alternatively start drilling wet. Have your machine examined/ serviced. With Marcrist DDM2, this service is free (For each service 10 vouchers are required. One voucher is received with every CCU850X core purchased). 6

Problem 6 - Segment Loss Core drill is not running concentric. Drilling/cutting debris is building up on the side of the core and is jamming the core. Material cannot be drilled dry. Core drill is being forced too hard. Examine machine spindle and core drill. Repair/replace if the core drill is not running concentric. Regularly clear the hole of the cutting/drilling debris. Especially important on vertical and deep holes. If cutting debris does not clear, start drilling wet or use the vacuum suction unit 320.101.0150 to clear debris. Very hard reinforced concrete cannot be drilled dry. The segments will melt. Connect the machine to water and continue drilling with water. Reduce the feed pressure and give the core time to drill. 7

Problem 7 - Segments are folding in or out Excessive pressure. The drilling machine is left on hammer. Diamond core is pushed at a speed that exceeds its maximum ability to drill. Reduce the feed pressure in line with how fast the diamond drill can drill. Dry cores must be used on rotary drilling only. Percussion or hammer drilling is, not recommended as it reduces the life of the core drill. A diamond core must never be used on hammer. Remove feed pressure, let the core do the work; do not push too hard. In the unlikely event of segment loss, the lost segment must be removed from the hole prior to drilling re-commencing. For further information or help telephone our Technical Support Line: 01302 893 253. Marcrist Technical Engineers will help even if you are not currently using Marcrist products. 8

Problem 8 - Core is lodged within the diamond core The heat has expanded the material which is now lodged in the core. The core has lost its side clearance. Remove the core from the machine. Let the material cool down. Remove the material without damaging the core. Running water through the core may help. Check the core is running concentric. Check the machine spindle, core, thread and extension rods for straightness and concentric running. Use Marcrist automatic core extraction. For further information or help telephone our Technical Support Line: 01302 893 253. Marcrist Technical Engineers will help even if you are not currently using Marcrist products. 9

s and effects of diamond drilling Effect Drilling speed (rpm) too slow. Drilling speed (rpm) correct. Drilling speed (rpm) too fast. Cutting debris and drilling dust is not cleared regularly. Cutting debris and drilling dust are cleared regularly or vacuum unit is used. Excessive pressure is applied. Constant correct pressure is applied. Insufficient feed pressure is applied. Diamond core does not drill. The core glazes and eventually stops drilling. Diamond core penetrates quickly and gives good life. Diamond core glazes, polishes and penetrates slowly. Eventually it stops drilling and starts melting. It needs redressing. The drilling dust cannot escape. It builds up between the side of the bore hole and the wall of the core drill. It creates heat and friction. The core drill will jam and overheat. The drill penetrates quickly with little wear. The core does not jam and jerk. The core does not have time to drill. The segments glaze and ultimately melt or fold in. The life of the drilling machine and diamond core is reduced greatly. The core drill penetrates quickly. Core drill life is good. Machine life is good. The core drill does not cut but polishes. Drilling speed becomes increasingly slower. Core drill needs re-sharpening. If not re-sharpened, in time, it will heat up and ultimately melt or segment loss occurs. 10
