C40 represents 82 cites in over 50 countries 640+ million people or 1 out of 12 of the world s population $20 Trillion GDP or 25% of the total global economy or equal to the US and India combined 1.9 GT/yr The worlds 5th largest greenhouse gas emitter 16

Cities Act In 2013 C40 cities undertook 8,068 actions 12% were city wide

Cities have the power

Mayoral power and climate action Many cities are identical in their capacity, i.e. who owns and operates city assets Limited power does not always mean limited action New data show that up to a third of all city actions are made where cities have no or little direct power. This is often through partnering with other actors open for more opportunities. 19

Realdania s work with C40 Reduction of CO2 emissions + climate proofing of cities Knowledge in International knowledge imparted to the Danish municipalities Knowledge out Danish knowledge communicated to other countries 21

Compact of Mayors

Compact of Mayors The world s largest coalition of municipal leaders addressing climate change by pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, tracking their progress and preparing for the impacts of climate change. 199 cites have now joined representing more than 265 million people worldwide. 23

Through the Compact, cities are Increasing their visibility as leaders responding to climate change Demonstrating their commitment to an ambitious global climate solution Encouraging direct public and private sector investments in cities by meeting transparent standards Building a consistent and robust body of data on the impact of city action Accelerating more ambitious, collaborative, and sustainable local climate action 24

Endorsement from national leaders 25

Compact of Mayors in four steps Commit Take inventory (via GPC) Create targets Establish an action plan
