Year 3 Project Affirmation of Name: Due: Wednesday, March 26

Affirmation paper Due Date: Wednesday, March 26, 2014 Instructions You will need to type some of your answers to the questions below, some you can write on these pages. It will say when to write and when to type. Use complete sentences when answering the questions below. This is YOUR Affirmation project. While it s important to get ideas from parents, guides and friends this paper should reflect what YOU think! Make sure your typed and other printed pages are attached to this document. Use a stapler! Affirming your Baptism Part of Confirmation is affirming (saying YES) your baptism, the day you became God s child. Answer these three questions here. What day were you baptized? What is baptism and what does it mean? Why is baptism so important? (if you re stuck, listen to Pastor Tim s sermon from January 12th: Baptism of our Lord. It s on our website, roll over resources, than click on sermon podcasts and find 1-12-14.

The Promises I Will Make On the day you affirm your faith, you will make the following promises before God and the Congregation. They are the same promises that your parents and sponsors made when you were baptized: Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Answer the following questions here: What do these promises mean to you? How will you keep each of these promises? Which of these will be easy to keep? Which will be difficult?

I believe in God the Father Our God is often called Father, creator, and even mother. On a separate piece of paper, show me who God is to you. You can use song lyrics, an image from Google, a picture you took, a drawing your made, a poem you wrote, or anything that expresses who God is. On the same piece of paper, answer (either typed or written) to following questions: What do you believe and know about God today? How do you know God? How and when is God most real to you? What is the most important attribute (characteristic) of God? I believe in God the Son We know Jesus to be our savior, redeemer and friend. On a separate piece of paper, type or write, the answers to the following questions. What was Jesus purpose on earth? Why did Jesus die? What happened after Jesus died? Why is it important? Do a Google image search for Jesus, pick the image of Jesus that most speaks to you and explain in a paragraph (5 sentences) why you chose that image of Jesus and what it means to you. I believe in God the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is called the advocate, sustainer and spirit of God. The Holy Spirit s job is to empower us and help us grow as disciples of Jesus Christ. On a separate piece of paper, type or write the answers to the following questions: When have you felt that God is with you? Describe the situation and how you felt God in your life. How is your faith different now, at the end of Confirmation, than at the beginning (in 7th grade)? Who or what has helped you grow in faith? Could they be working on the Holy Spirit s behalf? How do you know that God is with you and in your life? On a separate piece of paper, show me something that reminds you of the Spirit s presence in the world. It can be anything: song lyrics, a picture, a drawing, a story...

Christian Living Lutherans talk about faith practices. These practices (and there are others too) help us to keep our faith growing and changing. They are: worship, pray, study, serve, invite and encourage. All of the following questions should be answered on a separate piece of paper. Answers can be typed or written. Worship Pray Why is regular worship important? Who is the focus of our worship? What part of worship help you get spiritually engaged or recharged? What does Holy Communion mean to you? What does it do to/for you? How do you feel after taking Holy Communion? Do you pray? How often? When do you pray? Is prayer easy or difficult? Invite What would you tell someone about God if they asked you? What would you tell someone about church if they asked you? Encourage Who has encouraged you in your faith? Have you every encouraged anyone in faith or otherwise? How do you think you would encourage someone in faith? Study Do you feel you want to grow deeper in your faith? What role does the Bible play in your faith? Serve What service projects do you remember from confirmation? Why do you think you remember it? What is a Christian person s role in the world? What is the church s role in the world?
