H E A L T H C A R E S C I E N C E COURSE: UNIT 3: Healthcare Science Teamwork and Leadership Annotation: Grade(s): Students will analyze the types of teams and the roles and responsibilities of team members and leaders. They will complete a hands-on activity called Strength in Numbers that emphasizes the combined power of groups/teams and organizations. In this unit students will learn the basics about HOSA, as well as, complete the HOSA Statesman test. X 6 th 7 th 8 th Time: 4 hours Author: Cate Buchanan Students with Disabilities: For students with disabilities, the instructor should refer to the student's IEP to be sure that the accommodations specified are being provided. Instructors should also familiarize themselves with the provisions of Behavior Intervention Plans that may be part of a student's IEP. GPS Focus Standards: MSHS8-HS-3: The student will describe the attributes of effective teamwork and leadership. a) Describe Career and Technical Student Organizations and their importance in leadership development, and identify benefits of belonging to Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). b) Analyze different types of teams, identify team members, and discuss their roles and responsibilities. c) Participate in effective teamwork activities. GPS Academic Standards: S8CS1 S8CS4 Students will eplore the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science and will ehibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating equipment and materials in scientific activities utilizing safe laboratory procedures. National / Local Standards / Industry / ISTE: 8.11 Understand interdisciplinary roles of team members. 8.12 Recognize characteristics of effective teams. 8.13 Classify responsibilities of various team members. 8.21 Recognize methods for building positive team relationships. 8.22 Respect and value the epertise and contributions of all team members. Enduring Understandings: Being a member of groups such as HOSA prepares students for future leadership roles in society especially in professional organizations related to their career of choice. Teamwork is an important concept. In life people must often work together to reach common goals, organizations are usually more effective than individuals. Essential Questions: What are Career and Technical Student Organizations How would being a member of HOSA benefit you? Knowledge from this Unit: Students will be able to: Define teamwork and the roles and responsibilities of a team. Recognize the Career and Technical Student Organizations and the benefits of joining HOSA. Eplain the motto, creed, and purpose of HOSA. List the colors, and name the parts of the emblem and their meanings. Skills from this Unit: Students will be able to: Critique their teamwork skills and improve them based on their knowledge of team roles and responsibilities. Identify the standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom. Interest approach Mental set Ask students to identify Career and Technical Student Organizations in their school. Ask them what classes each CTSO belongs with? (E. FFA, Agriculture; FBLA, Business and Computer Science; FCCLA, Family and Consumer Sciences; HOSA, Healthcare Science) 5. Why join HOSA: Show this PowerPoint to the class. 6. HOSA Scavenger Hunt: Have the students complete this activity. It will help them prepare for their statesman test and help them become familiar with HOSA. 7. HOSA Word Search: Have the students complete this word search, it will help them become familiar with HOSA terms. 8. HOSA Statesman: Have your students take this practice statesman test for a test grade. They will become familiar with the types of questions that will be on their statesman test. LESSON 2: TEAMWORK 1. Review Essential Questions. Post Essential Questions in the classroom. What are different types of teams and what are the roles and responsibilities of team members? 2. Lead a general discussion on teamwork. Ask students why is teamwork important? Why is it good or bad? What do you like about teamwork? 3. Types of Teams and Team Member Roles and Responsibilities: Show this PowerPoint and discuss with the class. Students should take notes. This information will be useful in the net lesson. 4. Demonstration: Show the Strength in Numbers Activity PowerPoint and lead the class through the activity. Note that 6 of twine is needed for each student. 5. Summary: Ask students at random one of the following questions: What are the responsibilities of the team leader? Why is teamwork important? Name on type of team and what it is used for. Etc. LESSON 3: EFFECTIVE TEAMWORK 1. Review Essential Questions. Post Essential Questions in the classroom. Why are teamwork activities important? 2. Teamwork quotes activity: Print the provided Teamwork Quotes (attached) or find others that you like. Tape these quotes around the room. Have your students read the quotes and choose the one they like best. Have students that write a paragraph about why they like the quote and fill in the Teamwork Quotes Worksheet (attached). 3. Listening as an important teamwork skill: Have your students complete the Following Instructions Activity (attached). After completing the activity: Lead the class in a discussion about the listening skills when working as a team. Why should we listen to others? Why is it important to communicate your ideas clearly?
