ISO9001:2000 Certified Material Safety Data Sheet Section 1 - Chemical Product and Company Identification MSDS Name: Mercury standard, 1000ppm Catalog Numbers: LC16750 Synonyms: None. Company Identification: LabChem Inc 200 William Pitt Way Pittsburgh, PA 15238 Company Phone Number: (412) 826-5230 Emergency Phone Number: (800) 424-9300 CHEMTREC Phone Number: (800) 424-9300 Section 2 Composition, Information on Ingredients CAS# Chemical Name: Percent 7783-34-8 Mercury (II) nitrate monohydrate 0.18 7697-37-2 Nitric acid 2 7732-18-5 Water balance Section 3 - Hazards Identification Emergency Overview Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid Danger. Reproductive hazard. May cause severe eye irritation and possible injury. Causes skin and respiratory tract irritation. Corrosive to metal. Target Organs: Kidneys, central nervous system, eyes, reproductive system. Potential Health Effects Eye: May cause irreversible eye injury. Contact with eyes may cause severe irritation, and possible eye burns. Skin: Causes skin irritation. Ingestion: May cause severe digestive tract irritation with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. - 1 -

Inhalation: Harmful if inhaled. Effects may be delayed. May cause irritation of the respiratory tract with burning pain in the nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and pulmonary edema. Chronic: Exposure to high concentrations of nitric acid vapor may cause pneuomonitis and pulmonary edema which may be fatal. Symptoms may or may not be delayed. Continued exposure to the vapor & mist of nitric acid may result in a chronic bronchitis, & more severe exposure results in a chemical pneumonitis. The vapor & mists of nitric acid may erode the teeth, particularly affecting the canines & incisors. Section 4 - First Aid Measures Eyes: Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid. Skin: Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Ingestion: Call a poison control center. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid. Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. Do not use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively. Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Vapors may be heavier than air. They can spread along the ground and collect in low or confined areas. Containers may explode when heated. Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Extinguishing Media: Substance is noncombustible; use agent most appropriate to extinguish surrounding fire. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Autoignition Temperature: Not available Flash Point: Not available. NFPA Rating: (estimated) Health: 3; Flammability: 1; Instability: 1 Explosion Limits: Lower: n/a Upper: n/a - 2 -

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8. Spills/Leaks: Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth), then place in suitable container. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Provide ventilation. Section 7 - Handling and Storage Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Keep container tightly closed. Do not get on skin or in eyes. Do not ingest or inhale. Storage: Keep containers tightly closed. Store protected from light. Store in a cool, dry area away from incompatible substances. Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection Engineering Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use process enclosure, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to control airborne levels. Exposure Limits: Chemical Name: ACGIH NIOSH OSHA Mercury(II) nitrate monohydrate 0.025 mg/m3 TWA (as Hg) (listed under Mercury inorganic compounds).skin - potential significant contribution to overall exposure by the cutaneous route (listed under Mercury inorganic compounds). 0.05 mg/m3 TWA (vapor, except organo alkyls, as Hg) (listed under Mercury compounds).10 mg/m3 IDLH (as Hg, not including organo(alkyl) compounds) (listed under Mercury compounds). 0.1 mg/m3 Ceiling (listed under Mercury, aryl and inorganic compounds). Personal Protective Equipment Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure. Respirators: Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29 CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Use a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator if exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation or other symptoms are experienced. Section 9 - Physical and Chemical Properties Physical State: Liquid Color: Clear, colorless Odor: Slight odor of nitric acid ph: <1 Vapor Pressure: Not available Vapor Density: Not available Evaporation Rate: > 1 (ether = 1) Viscosity: Not available Boiling Point: Not available Freezing/Melting Point: Not available Decomposition Temperature: Not available Solubility in water: Soluble Specific Gravity/Density: 1.0 Molecular Formula: Not applicable Molecular Weight: Not applicable Section 10 - Stability and Reactivity Chemical Stability: Stable at room temperature in closed containers under normal storage and handling conditions. Conditions to Avoid: High temperatures, light. Incompatibilities with Other Materials: Nitric acid is incompatible with many substances.a detailed listing is available in the Fire Protection Guide to Hazardous Materials, 10th edition. Reacts explosively with organic materials and combustibles. Hazardous Decomposition Products: Nitrogen oxides, ammonia, mercury/mercury oxides. Hazardous Polymerization: Has not been reported. - 4 -
