My name is (interlocutor), and this is my colleague (assessor). [Ask Candidate A and Candidate B in turn questions about name and nationality (see below).] Name What s your name? [Collect marksheets and hand to assessor.] Now you are going to ask each other some questions. I want you to find out from each other about different things that you d like to be good at and why you d like to be good at these things. You have two minutes to talk to each other. You hear two answerphone messages about jobs at a supermarket. [Hand each candidate the booklet open at the correct page.] What is each message about? Office work, work at the checkout, or work filling shelves? Listen to the information. [Play CD.] Listening script 1 Hello, Mrs Brown. It was nice to meet you at the interview last week. I m very pleased you ve decided to join us. I d like you to come into the store one day next week to sign all the forms. On your first day, I ll introduce people in our different sections people on the tills as well as those working in other parts of the store. Then I ll explain our filing systems and go through the most important parts of the job, deadlines for paying employees all that sort of thing. Oh you ll need to bring a recent photo for our records. So could you give me a call? I ll be available (fade) Listening script 2 This is a message for Mr Thompson. Thank you for applying for a job at our store. I d like to invite you to come for an interview this Thursday afternoon at 3pm just ask for the manager s office on the first floor when you arrive. During the interview, we ll ask you to take a short test nothing difficult, but we need to be sure you re comfortable speaking to customers, dealing with money, giving the right change, and so on. After the interview, and if you re successful, you ll have the chance to practise on one of the tills. Now, we re looking for someone who s available at least four days a week we can discuss this at the interview. If necessary, prompt candidates with questions from the box below (e.g. if candidates are experiencing difficulty in continuing the interaction or if they stray from the topic). Adapt if necessary. Encourage candidate-candidate interaction by eliciting agreement or alternative opinions from candidates by asking questions such as What do you think?, Tell us what you think., And you? ] Job interviews prompt questions What advice have people given you about finding a job?
