Modern TV Distribution Technology with the IPTVcompact System NEW: With Desktop Media Client for PCs Interactive IPTV Platform

Operational scenarios for Kathrein IPTVcompact systems Modern inter-active media have generally only been offered by larger telecommunication companies due to the high technical requirements involved. The Kathrein IPTVcompact system now offers the broad range of possibilities offered by such systems to subscribers connected to smaller, local distribution nets, including high-definition services. The extremely compact design coupled with automatic configuring of both server and software modules makes system installation very simple indeed. Ready-to-deploy systems can be easily commissioned - long and involved system planning and commissioning is no longer necessary. The system has been designed so that local operational efforts can be kept to a minimum with no highly specialised service team needed on-site 24/7. The remote servicing over internet capability allows one to pass any support functions on to an external service support company. Kathrein's IPTVcompact system can offer a suitable solution wherever an efficient distribution of TV, video and audio contents is required. In the following a selection of operational fields: Hotel TV and Hospitality operations Most hotels offer their guests internet nowadays. Direct to room cabling securing discretion and best connection quality are usually offered for today's business guests. For new builds and when older systems need upgrading, one must globally consider the way multimedia is to be offered in future - with multiple, flexible and open services. Offering media on-demand services, such as VoD or time-shifted TV will help to highlight the multimedia services you can offer. Even when business meetings take longer than planned - your guests need not miss a programme - the 'catch-up TV' functionality will allow viewing later on in the evening. CampusTV and Holiday Villages On university campuses one usually has a hi-performance IT network in place, so that no additional coax cabling is required. The extreme flexibility of the Kathrein IPTVcompact system allows one to change the medial offer on such a network very quickly - matching this even to rapidly changing audience requirements. This is particularly useful for holiday centres, where, just as for Hotel TV, tourist information and special offers need to be matched to new and seasonal demand shifts. Using the "campus connect" option, buildings longer distances away from the main system can be simply connected to it using fibre optics for wide-area media provisioning. 2

Airports and Train Stations In these high passenger-traffic sites, up-to-date information is extremely important - especially when short-term information packets must be portrayed in a different manner in different buildings or areas. The required flexible change between graphical and textual information displays with explanatory videos or livetv has to be remotely controllable. Pre-recorded information sequences can be displayed when and where required (e.g. check-in information). Shops demand e.g. In-StoreTV at a specific "Point of Sale". An IPTV system such as the Kathrein IPTVcompact is especially matched to such varied demands offering flexibility, screen design and segmenting of addressed display units according to function or site. Premium Living In specific areas of ships, yachts or larger buildings exclusive functions including 'catch-up TV' or VoD today are expected in high definition resolution. Kathrein's IPTVcompact system is providing a solution for the most up-to-date media consumption requirements. Music from an MP3 library or even video from surveillance cameras - anything can be called up in any room or cabin at the touch of a button on a remote control. Congress Centres, Public Buildings, Cinema Centres, Digital Signage Just as with airports, the main demand for such buildings is an ongoing change of content display - visitor flow has to be controlled and running information updates on events and activities has to be displayed. Demands in flexibility and controllability are enabled by the Kathrein IPTVcompact system functioning as the core of an IP-based TV signal system offering demandmatched graphical user surfaces. Business TV, Banks & Stock Exchanges, Newspapers and Broadcasters Company personnel require a steady stream of the latest information - best per mouse click at any work desk in the house. Using the Desk-top Media Client - a video application running on PCs - no second screen or any parallel cabling is needed. Any new programme with the latest from the stock market or a preview of field contributed coverage any clip recorded or from a live source can be accessed company-wide by any authorised user. 3

The Kathrein IPTVcompact system supports the following multi-media packets Live Streaming of Video and Audio Contents With Live Streaming Live Streams can be viewed. Usually this covers the live streams of well-known radio and TV programmes made available in a data network on an IP basis. A graphic user surface and an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) make programme selection very simple indeed. Video on Demand (VoD) The VoD function is based on a video library which allows the viewer the direct selection and immediate playout of films (on demand) from the screen display. Waiting periods and fixed play-out times are terms of the past. Generally the content provider makes current and attractive films for all tastes and likes available. Design your family entertainment around the contents available. Audio on Demand The functions are comparable to those offered by a modern MP3 player: Title selection according to generic group or artist are only two of many possible selection options. Classic, Jazz or Hip-Hop - anything from the latest charts can be played out. Internet on TV A continuously up-dated Internet Browser running centrally on a server and in direct contact with the user s IPTV box, enabling simple and secure internet-surfing from the TV screen. Large and modern LCDs or LED displays make this possibility especially attractive. To pick up the latest information quickly one does not need to boot one's PC immediate internet over TV takes over! Time Shift TV and Video-recorder (npvr) Time is not of consequence any more. You can simply play time back: a 24-hour server based memory bank covering selected streams enables selection-free access to those already transmitted programmes you didn t want to miss. No problem. Any already running programmes can also be stopped and as often as you want. A server-based integrated video recorder saves selected programmes at your command. The Multi-Media Packets described are available depending on the IPTVcompact system in operation or upgrade level. Further Kathrein IPTVcompact system Highlights: HDTV for a reality-near TV experience Extremely rapid teletext, up-to-date, actual and quick Zapping Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), a clear user-surface overview with well-structured information presentation makes finding and selecting programmes very simple. XML interface for data exchange with external programmes The GUI can be customised to user requirements Scalable to the number of users and number of programmes/films Secure data transfer based on point to point Unicast protocol 4

The Kathrein IPTVcompact system modular - versatile - future secure The extremely versatile, and very compact design of Kathrein s IPTVcompact system allows it to be simply and flexibly matched to any type of application and deployment environment in a very economic manner. The fully modular design allows operation of the Kathrein IPTVcompact in a broad range of operational uses. Additionally functions can be extended in a step-by-step approach as requirements arise. An initial basic offering of TV programmes can, for example, be easily extended to cover niche TV programming and then finally to include non-linear services such as catch-up TV, videos or music ondemand as well as inter-active services - all without any modification in the network or in the customer premises equipment required! The IPTVcompact system is available in 4 configurations: 1. IPTVcompact Stream IPC-SET STR This configuration offers just streaming capability, and is foreseen to generate multi-cast streams for use in campus nets. 2. IPTVcompact Live IPC-SET LIV This configuration offers all modern comfort features, such as a graphic user-surface and a simple-to-use electronic programme guide with a supported automatic updating of programme data. The advantages of modern server technology can be clearly seen especially when considering rapid teletexting: by saving and continuously updating all programme data and teletext pages in the Kathrein IPTVcompact system, the TV-user can call these up without any long loading periods one key is activated on the remote control and the data is already available. 3. IPTVcompact Video on Demand IPC-SET VOD This configuration offers an on demand function enabling one to call-up films, videos and music (from 100 to 200 hours in standard-definition). Hotel and holiday villages can use this service to generate extra income. Licences are available for 100, 200 and 500 users. 4. IPTVcompact Premium IPC-SET PRE This configuration offers further to the previously described features a time-shift function. Up to 10 programmes can be concurrently cached for 12 or 24 hours and are available for the user as time-shift programmes. Inside the cache period, the user can play a programme back and forth as often as he likes, and view interesting scenes several times or simply stop the programme. This last feature is also possible even if the programme has not been re-selected for time-shift viewing. Most of the programme caching occurs in the server. Licences are available for 100, 200 and 500 users. Dependent on the available memory capacity in the headend, the system provider can offer users an individual memory capacity for his own use and against payment. Kathrein DVB to IP Streamer: TVD 200, 2 x DVB-S/S2 Tuners for SD & HDTV Reception in 1 x RU In order to provide a local IP network with live programmes from a satellite via the Kathrein IPTVcompact system, the satellite signals need to be converted to IP. This function is carried out with the Kathrein TVD 200. The unit is designed with two DVB-S/DVB-S2 inputs allowing it to receive both HDTV or SDTV signals and to stream these through an IP network. PayTV signals can be decrypted with an appropriate Conditional Access Module (CAM) plugged into the TVD 200 DVB Common Interface slots (DVB-CI) provided. In order to decrypt several programmes simultaneously, two DVB CI slots are available for each of the inputs. The decrypted transport streams are then available either via ASI or Gigabit Ethernet (GE) interfaces. Local setting can be carried out simply using the tuning wheel and the LCD display. An integrated web server allows one to carry out remote configuration using a standard web browser e.g. in order to set a change of transponder. An SNMP agent is implemented allowing monitoring using a network management system (NMS for carrier applications only, usually not needed in hospitality IPTV). GE GE IP Network GE Further video & audio sources (DVB-T, FM, local analogue, RTP camera) 10 Apart from the TVD 200, other sources such as DVB-T or DVB-C can also be fed into the Kathrein IPTVcompact system using appropriate streaming devices including the direct insertion of IP transport streams (MPTS or SPTS). Local analogue sources can be fed into the KATHREIN IPTVcompact through MPEG-2 or H.264 AVC encoders. Generally 'structured cabling' using CAT 5/6/7 cables is used for the distribution net. Other cabling types can also be used e.g. optical fibre networks (FttH), or legacy leads such as twisted pairs (with VDSL) or coaxial cable (with EuroDOCSIS). Klein, kompakt, leicht zu verstecken und trotzdem optimaler HDTV-Empfang
