Lesson 5. What About Dinosaurs? OBJECTIVES: Show that God made dinosaurs on day six, along with man and all other animals. Explain that dinosaurs did not live in a time period before man, contrary to what the children may hear from television, books and some teachers. BEFORE CLASS: Print the activities on copy paper for each child. Try to find a package of small dinosaurs at a discount store. I found a package of twelve colorful dinosaurs for only one dollar at the Dollar General store. At the end of class the students played with the dinosaurs for a while and then we divided them up and each child got to take two or three home. Depending on your class size you may want to purchase more than one package. If you cannot find dinosaurs that are affordable, perhaps you could find dinosaur stickers to send home with the students. Be careful about giving anything too small to children so young that they are still putting things in their mouth. I also found much bigger dinosaurs at the Dollar General for one dollar each. I bought several of those to keep in the classroom. They could also be sent home with younger students. LESSON: Text: Gen. 1:24ff and Job 40, 41 Remind the students that God made man and animals on day six of creation. If you are teaching fourand five-year-olds, read Gen. 1:24-25 in class. If you are teaching twos and threes, just talk about day six and what God made that day. Name some animals including dinosaurs. Talk about Adam and how he got to name the animals God made. The word dinosaur means terrible lizard. The word dinosaur is not found in the Bible because modern man came up with the word dinosaur. The Old Testament book of Job talks about a dinosaur called behemoth and a creature called leviathan that may have been a dinosaur (Job 40, 41.) Since Job lived after the flood, we can also be sure that Noah had dinosaurs on the ark. Of course we do not know the age of the dinosaurs, so they may not have been fully grown. Talk to the children about modern scientists. Many scientists don t believe God created the world in six days and do not believe man and dinosaurs lived at the same time. They teach that dinosaurs were extinct before men came into existence. It is true that dinosaurs are extinct now, but there was a time when dinosaurs and men lived together. Perhaps the dinosaurs were fierce and men avoided them, but perhaps the dinosaurs were docile, much like cattle. We cannot know for certain about things like that. We do know that God brought the animals to Adam so he could name them. If you are teaching older preschoolers (fours and fives) you might consider bringing some children s books to class that teach about dinosaurs. If they are not written by believers in a young earth, they will talk about dinosaurs living millions of years ago. Some books might even tell of the big bang or life evolving from pools of slime Show the children that the books are not to be believed. Most young children run into these kinds of evolutionist ideas if they watch television or go to preschool. Explain to the children that things are not true just because they are printed in black and white in a book written by a man. The only book we can really trust is the Bible because it was written by men who were inspired by God. If you would like to own some books about dinosaurs that teach the biblical truth, I would recommend contacting Apologetics Press. They sell books and other materials.

ACTIVITIES: Match: The children should draw a line from each dinosaur to its match. Coloring Page: This illustrates man and dinosaurs living at the same time. Maze: This is an easy maze, depicting a dinosaur living at the same time as men. Game: Print the cards on heavy paper and make two copies. Play the game in class as a group if time allows, or give each child a set to take home. How Many: The children should count the number of each dinosaur and write the number in the blank. You can do this as a group if you like. Fill-in-the-Blanks: This is provided for the older children in your class who are already reading. You can also read it to some of the older preschoolers and show them which words to print in the blanks.
