TRAINING & CERTIFICATION CASE STUDY DEBRIEF Capitalized Interest Case Study Debrief The following disclosure is on page 95 of the 2012 10K: While the capitalized interest was roughly the same in 2010 and 2011, it jumped sharply in 2012 thereby inflating apparent profitability. The actual cash flow would therefore have been lower by this difference of around $249m. Because capitalized interest causes increased depreciation in the future, EBITDA is not affected (as both interest and depreciation are excluded from EBITDA). TRAINING & CERTIFICATION CASE STUDY DEBRIEF Lease Adjustment Case Study Debrief The following disclosure is on page 112 of the 2012 10K: Given that the minimum operating leases in the table above, although lumpy, are broadly declining over time, it is probable that the lease multiplier method will give the higher and therefore more conservative capitalized figure. We therefore take 2012 s expenses of $185m and multiply by 6x to arrive at a capitalized figure of $1,110 on the balance sheet both as debt and as PP&E. On the income statement, EBITDA is raised by $185m as the operating lease payment is reallocated to interest (1/3 of $185 or $62m) and depreciation (2/3 of $185m or $123m).
