Missouri Softball History 2007 Season

The Stars of Missouri Softball Over the last 30 years, the Missouri softball program has built a winning tradition. Since its creation in 1975, they claim the highest winning percentage of all team sports at Missouri and in 30 years, all but four squads have finished above.500 for the season. The Tigers have won three conference championships (1983, 1991, 1997), including Missouri s only Big 12 title in school history, made 10 NCAA Regional Tournament appearances (1982, 1983, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005) and three Women s College World Series (WCWS) appearances (1983, 1991, 1994). In the past 15 years of competition, Missouri has been ranked in the final national polls 10 times, with a 20thplace finish in 2005. Several individuals have been crucial to the development and success of Tiger softball. From Lisa Burke, Missouri s first n, to the women that made up the 1997 Big 12 Championship team, to current studentathletes Micaela Minner and Jen Bruck, Missouri s home run record setters, all have helped establish and carry on the Tiger softball tradition of success. Teresa Wilson ranks as one of Missouri s most outstanding players. An n pitcher, Wilson helped establish the Tiger program as a national power between 1980 and 1983. During her career, the Tigers made three top-10 poll appearances and advanced to the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) World Series in 1981, later making the teams first NCAA World Series appearance in 1983. Wilson s dominance from the mound is evident by the Missouri pitching records she still holds: career wins (102), career strikeouts (893), career shutouts (55), complete games (118), and winning percentage (.734). To date, she remains among the top two of Missouri career ERA leader Karen Snelgrove (0.38-1991-95) 54 2007-Missouri Softball almost every pitching record at Missouri. For her achievements, Wilson became the softball program s first Missouri Hall of Fame Inductee, earning the honor in 1996. Karen Snelgrove (1989-92) carried the Tigers tradition of success into the early 90s. During her pitching career, Snelgrove was in a league of her own, leading the nation for two years in a row with an ERA of 0.18. Her career ERA (0.38) still holds the top spot in the Missouri record book. A two-time-n (1991 and 1992), Snelgrove earned GTE Academic honors in 1991. Upon finishing her career at Mizzou, Snelgrove was named to Team Canada where she made an appearance at the 1996 Olympic Games. In 1998, Snelgrove became the second softball player selected for the Missouri Hall of Fame. Recognized in 1999 as Missouri s third softball inductee into the Hall of Fame, Kris Schmidt (1985-88) made a name for herself with the high level of success she achieved in the field and at the plate. A first basemen and outfielder for the Tigers, Schmidt hit.410 in 1986, tallying a career average of.350 with 212 career hits, totals that rank second and third all-time in the Tiger record book, respectively. As a sophomore in 1986, Schmidt earned honors. A two-time All-Midwest Region selection (1986 and 1988) and three-time All-Big Eight Conference selection, Schmidt gave back to the Missouri program when she was named an assistant coach from 1989-1993. Schmidt continued her softball career after college, playing with the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) power Raybestos Brakettes, winning the ASA National Championship in 1992. Schmidt was a member of the US National Team which brought home a gold medal from the 1991 Pan- Am Games held in Indianapolis, Ind. In 1994, two more Tiger legends started their careers at Missouri. Mary Babb and Barb Wright joined their teammates in helping carry the tradition of success through the 90s. Along the way, their teams went to a college world series, three NCAA regional tournaments and earned the first and only Big 12 Conference championship title for any sport at the University of Missouri. Babb (1994-97) walked onto the Missouri softball team and earned a starting spot at shortstop. She led the team in batting (.330) and earned Big Eight Freshmen of the Year honors in 1994. Babb s dominant hitting continued throughout her four-year career and she remains among the top three in nine singleseason batting records and owns seven career records: at bats (762), hits (262), doubles (51), home runs (26), runs scored (164), RBI (199), and slugging percentage (.571). In 1997, Babb helped lead the team to the Big 12 tournament title after going 7-17 with four home runs. Her power at the plate earned her National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Player of the Week honors and a spot on the All-Big 12 Tournament team. An explosive athlete, Babb earned National Strength Coaches Association (NSCA) n honors as a senior in 1997. The only first-team n in Missouri softball history, Wright owns a.329 career batting average along with pitching 476 career strikeouts. In 1997, she earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors after helping guide the Tigers to a Big 12 title. Along the way, Wright earned the title of Big 12 tournament MVP. Wright has the record for career starts (125), is tied for third with career wins (78) and is fourth for career innings pitched (747) and complete games (80). She stands second in career RBI (139) and career slugging percentage (.559) and is tied for second with 24 career home runs. One of the strongest Tiger softball players in history, she, alongside Babb, earned NSCA honors in 1997. All of these great individuals contributed to great teams. The 1983 team gave Missouri its first WCWS appearance and its first Big Eight championship. Led by Wilson, Karen Keitzman, n Karen Sweet and Terry Schweikert, the team complied a 40-13 record, finishing seventh in the WCWS. In 1991, the Tigers returned to the WCWS. On their way through the season, Snelgrove and shortstop Brenda Paskiewicz earned All- Big Eight honors, with Paskiewicz hitting.360. Missouri outfielder Jill Brent not only earned All-Conference honors but was also named an Academic n. As a team, the Tigers won the Big Eight regular season and took fifth at the WCWS, the highest finish by any Missouri softball team. In 1994, seniors Janie Lanis, Dana Way and Terri Young led the team to a seventh place finish at the WCWS and are now among a select group of Tigers who have made more than one World Series appearance in their career. Christie Boen, Tiffany Heick, Dana Way, and Gina Anderson earned All-Midwest Region honors, with 11 Tigers named to the All-Big Eight team. In 1997, the Tigers entered their first full season of Big 12 play, with Babb, Stacy Bailey and Wright providing leadership as seniors and team captains. The team won both the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships and set the Missouri record for highest batting average (.318) that still stands today. With 47 wins, the 1997 squad also set the record for most victories (47), previously set in 1982 at 46. The Tigers ended their successful season at the NCAA Regional Tournament and were ranked 12th in the final NFCA poll. Tiger fans witnessed history in the making during the 2004 season, with pitcher Erin

Kalka owning the mound and moving up in the MU record books while helping her team to its second consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearance. Kalka broke Teresa Wilson s 1982 single-season strikeout record and on April 3, established her mark on the NCAA single-game strikeout list after striking out 25 Oklahoma State Cowgirls to rank third all-time in the nation. In 2005, even more records were set as the Tigers tallied 82 home runs breaking the previous season high of 36 set in 1997, with Minner launching a Mizzou season-high 17 bombs. Missouri made its second straight Big 12 Tournament title game appearance and became the first team in league history to suffer an opening round loss only to come back and play in the championship game. Missouri s record earned it a berth to a third straight NCAA Regional Tournament appearance and on May 21, the Tigers hosted Robert Morris, Stanford and Southern Illinois for only the second time in MU softball history. Playing two games on May 21, Missouri recorded back-to-back no hitters advancing to the title game against No. 4 Stanford. The season ended with a 44-15 record after dropping a 3-2 loss to the Cardinal. The Coaches That Lead Missouri softball got its start in 1975 under the direction of Head Coach Alexis Jarrett. With a 14-7 record, Jarrett led her team to a second place Massachusetts Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) state championship. The 1976 season would be Jarrett s last as she closed out her career record at 28-14 and managed a sixth place showing at the Big Eight championships. The first softball coaching change of command came in 1977, when Debbie Duren took over. For four years, Duren helped guide the fledging team to impressive performances, earning a second place finish at the 1980 Big Eight championships. From 1981-82, Barb Priest took the lead also managing a second place Big Tournament finish. Joyce Compton stepped in as head coach for the 1983 season, and in her first year coached the Tigers to a Big Eight and NCAA Midwest regional championship title, eventually finishing seventh in the school s first WCWS appearance. Rhesa Summell stepped in as head couch for one year at Missouri and was replaced by Jay Miller. Opening another chapter in Missouri softball history, Miller took two teams to World Series appearances (1991, 1994) finishing as high as fifth in 1991. With the creation of a new conference, the Big 12, Miller was a coach that could claim both Big Eight and Big 12 championship teams as well as Midwest Regional honors. Named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1997, Miller brought about national attention to a deserving Missouri softball team. In 2003, Ty Singleton began his career at Missouri. Singleton guided three teams as far as NCAA Regional Tournaments and finished the 2005 campaign with a 44-15 record, the fifth highest win total in Missouri s 30-year history. For his accomplishments in 2003, Singleton earned Missouri s second Big 12 Coach of the Year award. Ehren Earleywine took over the program in the fall of 2006 and looks to build on the success of Missouri s past seasons. With a combination of strong athletic talent, good leadership and coaching, Missouri softball has been consistently competitive.
