A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks And Tablet Computers By Eric A Hopp For the first weekend of November, 2012, Apple launched the ipad Mini, a smaller version of its popular ipad tablet computer ( IPad Mini Announced: Apple Unwraps New IPad at Big Media Event ). This computer measures almost 8 inches, from corner to corner, and is in direct competition with similar sized tablet computers using the Android operating system from Amazon, Google, and Samsung ( IPad Mini Announced: Apple Unwraps New IPad at Big Media Event. ). In the three days since the ipad Mini s debut, Apple reported selling 3 million ipad Minis and ipad 4 tablet computers (Arthur). This brings us to the next question of should you rush out and purchase an ipad Mini? If you are considering the purchase of a new computer, what computer should you buy? There is a confusing array of choices. Not even five years ago, your computer choices were relegated to either a desktop computer or a laptop computer. Today, your choices are desktops, laptops, netbooks, and tablets, each with an operating system flavor of Windows, Apple OS, or even Android. Which computer should you choose?
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, This report will compare the strengths and weaknesses of three mobile computer platforms. These platforms are the laptop computer, netbook computer, and tablet computer. Any citations of a particular model are for a generalized example. Desktop Computers and Smart Phones The Anchors We can divide computers into five different platform types, depending on performance and mobility. They are desktop systems, laptops, netbooks, tablets, and smart phones. Desktops and smart phones anchor each end of this division. At one end of the anchor, we have the desktop computers. You can think of these computers as the work horses in the computer world. Desktop systems can be equipped with highperformance processors, a large amount of memory, and several high-capacity hard drives and optical drives inside a large case. Desktop systems can provide greater performance over laptops (Nicholas). Laptops are designed to be mobile, where their electronic components are placed inside of a small, enclosed case, using a limited amount of battery power. (Fenton). These components will generate heat. Therefore, manufacturers needed to design processors with lower clock speeds and voltage requirements to reduce the amount of heat generated and conserve the battery power used (Fenton). Desktop systems have no limitations in the size of their cases, or cooling systems. Power for a desktop comes from their power supplies, connected to an electrical outlet there is no battery power for a desktop. With a desktop computer, you can run high-performance gaming or graphic intensive programs, such as video editing, which could slow a laptop computer ( Demand for Desktops ). The great disadvantage of a desktop computer is that it is shaped like a brick, weighs 25lbs, and is not portable vs. a laptop (that) is shaped like a book, weighs 5lbs, and is portable,
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, (Nicholas). There is no mobility for a desktop system. They remain at your desk, ready to serve your computing needs. At the opposite end of the anchor, there is the smart phone. The smart phone provides complete mobility for your computer needs. You can download programs, images, watch video, and surf the web through your smart phone, anywhere and anytime and still make phone calls. Smart phones are small, light weight, and can be carried in your pocket, or a small purse. You do not need to carry a laptop computer bag. They are the start of a ubiquitous computing society ( Ubiquitous Computing ), where information processing is thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities ( Ubiquitous Computing ). According to Canalys, 2011 global smart phone shipments were greater than client personal computers for the first time. This included desktops, laptops, netbooks, and tablets (Bertolucci). But smart phones come with two major disadvantages. The first is the small screen size. One of the largest smart phones, the Samsung Galaxy Note, comes with a 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display (Bertolucci). Most laptop computers have between 14-inch to 17-inch displays, which is almost three times the screen size of a smart phone. The second problem with smart phones is a lack of keyboard or mouse device. Smart phones come with either a touch keypad on the screen, or a small, slide-out thumb keyboard on the back of the phone. These keypads are not ergonomically designed for extensive word processing typing, or precisely entering spreadsheet data. There is no simple point-and-click interface of a mouse, as in laptops and desktops. Instead, the user taps the touch screen to move, zoom in, and touch links or icons to open web pages and applications. However, for
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, instant, on-the-go, web surfing and computing, smart phones fill a completely mobile niche. Laptops The First Mobile Computers Toshiba Satellite S8750S-S7242 Laptop Computer ( Toshiba Satellite S875- S7242: Angle ) This leaves the laptop, netbook, and tablet computers in the middle. All three computers provide mobility for your computing needs. The differences between these three are specifications, performance, and lifestyle. The laptop computer was really the first mobile computer. One of the first, commercially successful portable microcomputers was the Osborne 1, released on April 3, 1980, by the Osborne Computer Corporation ( Osborne 1 ).
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, The First Mobile Computer The Osborne 1 ( Osborne 1 Obsolete Tech). This mobile computer had an 8-bit microprocessor, a five-inch displace screen, a single-sided floppy disk drive, and weighed 23.5 pounds. There was no battery for the Osborne 1 ( Osborne 1 ). Today s laptop computers come with 64-bit, dual or quad core processors, and a 13 to 17-inch display screens. Laptops include both a hard disk drives with over 320 gigabytes in size, and an optical DVD or Blue Ray drive. Laptop computers weigh anywhere between 3 to 15 pounds ( How to Buy a Laptop ). The operating system is usually either a Windows-based, or Mac-based OS. Just about all the major computer manufacturers sell laptop computers Hewlett Packard, Dell, Apple, Toshiba, Samsung, Asus, and Lenovo. Finally, pricing of laptop computers can range anywhere from around $300 to over $1,000, depending on specifications and features. Here are three examples of laptop computers for comparison: Acer Aspire 5349-2635; PCMag.com s editors consider this $348 list-price laptop to use as a household s third or fourth PC, or as a purchase for the kids,
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, (Grevstad). It comes with an Intel Core I-3 1.6 GHz processor, a 15.6-inch display screen, and a 320 gigabyte hard drive. Battery power lasts about 4 hours and 56 minutes. This laptop weighs five pounds, and runs the Windows 7 OS. The performance for the Acer Aspire is more than adequate for word processing and web surfing, but not for strenuous multitasking work, (Grevstad). The Acer Aspire 5349-2635 shows what a bare-bones, budget laptop computer can become. Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display; The MacBook Pro is a new design of a well-known Apple product ( Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display ). Powered by an Intel Core I-7 2.3 GHz processor, the MacBook Pro comes with both a 13-inch or 15-inch display screen, and a 256 gigabyte solid state hard drive. Battery life was 6 hours and 59 minutes. The MacBook Pro weighs about 4.6 pounds, running the Apple OSX Lion operating system. The MacBook Pro uses a unique Retina Display, providing a screen resolution of 2,880 x 1,880 pixels. A standards Windows laptop provides a screen resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels ( Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display ). With an MSRP of $2,199, this is one of the top-of-the-line laptop computers on the market. Toshiba Satellite S8750S-S7242; This Toshiba satellite is an affordably priced desktop replacement for the budget-conscious user who values performance over portability, (Kazi). The Toshiba Satellite is powered by an Intel Core I-7 2.3 GHz processor, and has a large 17.3 inch display screen. There is a 750 gigabyte hard drive, loaded with Windows 7 OS. The laptop is surprisingly light, weighing in at 5.88 pounds. Battery life lasted 5 hours and 23 minutes. The
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, Toshiba Satellite packs solid hardware into an affordable package, making it a budget friendly desktop replacement, (Kazi). Performance wise, laptops can run the same operating system and software applications as desktop computers ( Can You Replace Your Laptop with a Tablet? ). Tablet computers use a mobile operating system, which is not compatible with a laptop OS ( Can You Replace Your Laptop with a Tablet? ). Laptop computers use a traditional keyboard, touchpad, or an optional USB mouse. You can type extensively in a word processing program, or mouse-click in a photo editing programs. Tablets have a touch screen for data entry, and may be uncomfortable for touch typists. The interface is the same between laptop computers and desktop computers. Tablets have a unique interface, which will need to be relearned by the user ( Can You Replace Your Laptop with a Tablet? ). Netbooks---An Evolving Computer Platform?
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, Asus Eee PC 1215B Netbook Computer ( Asus Eee PC 1215B: Angle ). Next, there are the netbook computers. A netbook computer is defined as a category of small, lightweight, legacy-free, and inexpensive laptop computers, ( Netbook ). Introduced at around 2007, netbooks featured smaller screens, keyboards, and reduced computing power in comparison to a full-sized laptop computer ( Netbook ). The first computer using the term netbook, was the the Asus Eee PC. This computer weighed in at two pounds, featured a 7-inch display screen, and utilized a keyboard which was 85 percent the size of a normal keyboard ( Netbook ). The operating system for the Asus Eee PC was Linux, and the computer was designed originally for emerging markets. However, when the Asus Eee PC sold over 300,000 in four months after its introduction, other manufacturers jumped into the netbook market. Netbook computers have increased in screen size and features, including better processors, hard disk drives, and optical CD or DVD drives. Netbooks have now evolved to the point of blurring the lines between netbooks and laptops. Here are three examples of netbook computers: Asus Eee PC 1215B; The latest model to follow an original trailblazer, the Asus Eee PC 1215B shows that even a plain package with the right parts inside can still be a smart purchase, (Westover). Powered by a dual-core, 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 processor, this Asus netbook comes with a 320 gigabyte hard drive and a 12-inch, 1366 x 768 display screen. This netbook computer weighs in at 3.3 pounds, and runs the Windows 7 OS. Battery life is 5 hours and 47 minutes. The Asus Eee PC s suggestive retail price is around $450 (Westover).
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, Lenovo ThinkPad X120E; The Lenovo ThinkPad X120E s unique strength is probably the best keyboard found on netbooks (Jacobi). There is no fingerscrunching that is common among netbooks. The ThinkPad X120E comes with an AMD E-250 Fusion processor, a 250 gigabyte hard drive, and an 11.6-inch display screen, showing 1366 x 768 resolution. Depending on a three-cell or sixcell battery, the netbook weighs in at 2.93 pounds and 3.31 pounds. The ThinkPad X120E comes loaded with Windows 7 OS, with the starting price at $450 (Jacobi). Acer Aspire One AOD255-1203; The Acer Aspire One is set at an extremely low price of $330, prompting Cheng to wonder if Acer is even remotely concerned about profit margins, given how aggressively priced its laptops are. The Aspire One has a 10-inch screen, displaying a 1024 x 600 resolution, and is powered by an Intel Atom N550 1.5 GHz processor. The hard drive size is 250 gigabytes, with a Windows 7 OS. The Acer Aspire One weighs in at 2.5 pounds, and can run over 7 hours on battery (Cheng). Netbook computers are in a tough space, performance wise. Their screen size is smaller than a laptop, but slightly larger than the tablet screen size. They have a smaller keyboard verses a regular laptop keyboard or no keyboard in a tablet. Netbooks can run the regular Windows operating system and software applications that laptops can, such as email, web browsing, and word processing. However the netbook s processers are slower than a laptop s processor, resulting in longer computer processing time for applications on a netbook computer over that of a laptop. Where the netbook computer shines over a laptop is that the 10-inch screen size netbook
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, computers are more portable than the 15-inch screen size laptop computers. As their power requirements are greatly reduced over that of a laptop computer, the netbook computer can run longer on a battery charge than a laptop computer. However, netbooks are facing tough competition with tablets. The Apple ipad runs on a 10-inch screen, the same as most netbooks, whereas other tablets have smallersized, 7-inch screens. While lacking a keyboard, the tablet computer can run the basic applications of web surfing and email as well as the netbook. Tablet computers are just as portable as netbooks, with the tablets weighing in less than netbooks. The netbook computer came at a time between 2007 and 2011, before the introduction of the Apple ipad ( Netbook ). Laptop computers were increasing in screen size and features, with supporters attempting to challenge a perceived supremacy of the desktop computer. The debate between laptop and desktop computers re-opened a market for a small, ultra-portable computer, which the netbook fulfilled. Yet over time, technological advances allowed tablet computers to become a new alternative in portable computing. According to Poeter, Acer shipped between 400,000 and 500,000 netbooks in May (2011), about 50 percent fewer than in the previous month. However, demand for Acer tablets increased between 200,000 and 300,000 for May 2011 (Poeter). Demand shifted from the portable netbook computers to the portable tablet computers. But the netbook is not really dying, as it is starting to evolve into something new. Advances in low-powered processors, solid-state drives (Which are electronic drives that do not contain spinning disks), and uni-body chassis, are revamping the netbook
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, computer into a higher-end, subnotebook computer ( Ultrabook ). Intel is already developing their Ultrabook model computers which combine both netbook and tablet computer features into a new line of portable computers. Tablet Computers The Dynabook Concept has Arrived! Comparison of size between the Apple ipad and the ipad Mini tablet computers. { Apple ipad (4 th Generation, Wi-Fi): Size Comparison } Finally, we come to tablet computers. Tablets are a mobile computer, larger than a mobile phone or personal digital assistant, integrated into a flat touch screen and primarily operated by touching the screen ( Tablet Computer, ). Instead of using a physical keyboard, the tablet uses an onscreen virtual keyboard. The concept of a tablet computer is not new. In 1968, computer scientist Alan Kay introduced the Dynabook concept of a slate computer with nearly eternal battery life and software designed to give children access to digital media ( Dynabook ). Tablet
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, computers have also appeared in a number of science fiction works. These include the Calculator Pad in the 1951 novel Foundation, by Isaac Asimov, to Arthur C. Clark s NewsPad, as depicted in Stanley Kubrick s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey ( Tablet Computer ). Even Gene Roddenberry s 1968 Star Trek and 1987 Star Trek: The Next Generation series included types of tablet computer devices ( Tablet Computer ). In 1983, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs gave a speech at the Center for Design Innovation, where he laid out his own vision of a tablet computer (Panzarino): Apple s strategy is really simple. What we want to do is we want to put an incredibly great computer in a book that you can carry around with you and learn how to use in 20 minutes. That s what we want to do and we want to do it this decade, says Jobs. And we really want to do it with a radio link in it so you don t have to hook up to anything and you re in communication with all of these larger databases and other computers. In 2010, Apple released the first, commercially successful tablet computer with the ipad ( Tablet Computer ). Here are three examples of tablet computers: Apple ipad; Now in its fourth generation, the Apple ipad has a 9.7-inch screen, displaying a 2048 x 1536 resolution (Segan). There are 3 memory configurations of 16, 32, and 64 gigabyte sizes, with prices starting at $499, $599, and $699, depending on memory size. There is a 1.2-megapixel camera, above the display and in the middle, and a 5-megapixel camera on the back, upper left corner. The
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, ipad runs Apple s ios 6, and users can download free and paid applications from the Apple Store (Segan). The battery is sealed inside the case, and can run 5 hours and 36 minutes. The weight on the ipad is 1.44 pounds. Since its introduction, Apple has sold over 100 million ipads to date (Chen, Apple). At the end of October, Apple introduced the ipad Mini, a smaller version of the ipad, with a screen size of 7.9 inches and weighing two-thirds of a pound (Chen Apple). Sale price for the ipad Mini will be around $330 (Chen, Apple). While Apple still dominates the market on tablet computers, however, competition is starting to grow. Amazon Kindle Fire; The Kindle Fire is probably the closest competitor to the Apple ipad, selling around 7 million tablets (Chen, How are 7-Inch Tablets Doing?). The Kindle Fire was originally designed as an e-book reader, or a specialized tablet computer to read electronic books, magazines, blogs, and other digital media through wireless networks ( Amazon Kindle ). The first Kindle Fire was introduced on September 28, 2011, for $199, and included a 7-inch display. The original Kindle Fire could hold 800 songs, or 6,000 books. The OS was a variation of Google s Android, which can be found on smart phones. There was web browser support, but no microphone or camera ( Amazon Kindle ). For comparison, Apple released its first ipad in 2010. On November 20, 2012, Amazon will release a new 8.9-inch display version of the Kindle Fire ( Kindle Fire HD 8.9, ). Called the Kindle Fire HD, several models will provide features of a 720-pixel front-facing camera, increased memory, Wi-Fi, and 4G cellular connection. Prices range from $299 for the Wi-Fi-only version with 16 gigabytes
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, of memory, to $599 for a 4G cellular connection with 64 gigabytes of memory ( Kindle Fire HD 8.9, ). Google Nexus 7; The Nexus 7 is the first tablet computer which Google has produced in conjunction with Asus Computer ( Nexus 7 ). This tablet uses Google s Android operating system, and has a 7-inch screen, displaying 1280 x 800 resolution ( Still the Best Small Tablet ). Weight is just over three-quarters of a pound, and has a 1.2-megapixel front camera. A 16 gigabyte Nexus 7 tablet computer starts at $199, while a 32 gigabyte Nexus 7, with mobile phone capabilities, starts at $299. On November 13, 2012, Google introduced a 10-inch screen version of its tablet, the Nexus 10, which starts at $399 ( Android s Most Promising ipad Alternative ). Lifestyle of Your Computing Needs So which computer should you choose? This really depends on your lifestyle, and how you plan to use your computer. Technology analyst Tim Bajarin makes an interesting observation, where tablets and smart phones are actually front-ends to consumer services like movies, music, [and] games, (Bajarin). Desktop, laptop, and even netbook computers have always been thought of as productivity tools first, and then consumer tools. You sit in front of your desktop or laptop to perform whatever computer application work you need to do. Tablet computers are the complete opposite of desktop, laptop, and netbook computers. You do not have to sit in front of a tablet computer you can lean it back on your knees to tap away, while not have to deal with balancing a keyboard. Tablets have a visual interface, with a touch screen. There is
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, intuitiveness with tablets, where an individual can pick up an Apple ipad and learn their way around the ipad in less than a half hour. Desktops and laptops use keyboards and mouse clicks. There is a steeper learning curve to understand which keystroke combination to press, or icon to click, in order to perform a function on a new software program, or operating system. Finally, there is a wealth of digital content, websites, games, e-books, music, pictures, and social media that you can enjoy on a tablet, at your fingertips. Look at what the second, best-selling tablet computer is behind the Apple ipad? It is the Amazon Kindle. Why? Probably because the Kindle originally started out as an e-book reader, allowing consumers to download digital content of books, magazines, movies, and music straight from the Amazon website. The success of the ipad resulted in Amazon adapting the Kindle from an e-book reader into more of a tablet computer, with features similar to the first generation ipads. Google started out as a software company, providing content for users through its search engine results, and internet browser. Now it is moving into the hardware with tablet computers while providing even more content with the Android operating system and applications to support the Android OS for smart phones and tablets. At the same time, tablet computers can provide a unique take in work productivity, not found in desktops and laptops. Because they are a portable, consumer-driven, visual technology, tablet computers can be adapted for business use. Sales representatives can use tablet computers for presentations, or look up customer or product information on the sales floor. They can be used to record data in warehouse operations. Any job that requires utilization of paper documents can possibly be adapted to having tablet computers store paperless documents. As a
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, consumer-driven product, individuals can take the ipad or Android skills they ve learned from tablets, and adapt them into a work environment using tablets. Of course, desktops, laptops, and netbooks are not going away. Desktops still provide the raw processing and graphics power, unmatched by laptops, netbooks, and tablets. Keyboard and mice interface make laptops and netbooks an excellent platform for typing, or mouse-click-heavy application work over that of tablets. Instead, what you may see in the future are some of the visual design elements of tablets being incorporated into desktop and laptop computers. HP has already incorporated touch screen technology in their TouchSmart desktop and laptop computers ( HP All-in-One and TouchSmart PCs ). Dell, Asus, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba are all selling flipdesigned Ultrabook computers, where the laptop s computer screen can be flipped around, and the laptop can be used as a tablet computer (Langer). Finally, as competitor tablets to the ipad become more refined, it is only a matter of time for docking stations to also be improved to make a tablet seem more like a desktop. Recommendations on All Three Platforms In this debate between laptops, netbooks, and tablets, your choice really depends on your lifestyle, and how you plan to use your new computer. The best recommendation you can do is to go into a Fry s Electronics, or a Best Buy, and test drive the different platforms, and different models. The computer which you will feel comfortable with, will be the computer you ll be using. These are my recommendations for all three platforms:
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, Laptop; Toshiba Satellite S8750S-S7242. I am a typist with the computer keyboard, and the Toshiba Satellite has one of the best laptop keyboards I ve played with. Other than that, price, performance, and workmanship are very similar between the Toshiba laptops, and those of the Dell, Hewlett Packard, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo. The Apple MacBooks are incredibly gorgeous computers, but start at a premium price of two or even three times what you would pay for a Toshiba laptop. The laptop computer industry has pretty much matured, with a variety of flavors to choose from Netbook; Acer Aspire One AOD255-1203. I am recommending the Acer Aspire One due to the lower price over that of competing netbooks. With tablets muscling their way in as the latest portable computer, netbooks are taking the best features of tablets and evolving into a newer form of subnotebook, or Ultrabook, computer systems. Further research will be necessary to compare different manufacturer s models for these new categories of computer platforms. Your best bet would be to look into purchasing these new subnotebook systems. However, as manufacturers phase out the netbook systems for these new systems, you may find excellent deals for an older netbook computer which could still fit your needs. Tablet; Apple ipad. With a two-year head-start in introducing the world to the tablet computer, Apple still is the king with the ipad. The ipad is a beautifully designed tablet, with ease of use and good computing horsepower. It is still an excellent system to engage in consumer web surfing and basic email. As the competition has introduced the smaller, 7-inch tablets, Apple has countered with
A Comparison of Laptops, Netbooks, the ipad Mini. If you are in the market now for a tablet computer, you can t go wrong with the ipad. But the competition is improving their tablet designs and models. By next year, the entire tablet could be turned on its head with a greater array of quality choices for the consumer. Each computer platform contains their own unique strengths and weaknesses, while also complementing the other platforms. In the future, you may be using two, three, or four computers depending on your computing needs at that moment. You may use a desktop computer for work and a tablet computer for digital play and web surfing. Or you may have a laptop for home office, a netbook for travel, and a tablet for play. What is important here is that there are choices in not just the different computing platforms and mobility, but also for different needs and how each system can satisfy each computing need. We are moving away from a one-size-fits-all computer world and into multiple computers to fit multiple needs. The choices are yours.
