A priest called Valentine did not agree, and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When his Emperor Claudius II actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that Valentine be put in prison and killed. At this time Valentine was in love with a young lady. On the night before his death he wrote her a letter which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still used today. So the very first 'valentine' was written by Valentine himself. This story is a legend; it may or may not be true. Nevertheless many years later in the year 496 the christian Pope Gelasius decided that Valentine was a saint, and that St Valentine's Day would be on February 14th, which is thought to be the day when Valentine was killed, and that this day should be a day of love and affection. After this many people thought of Valentine as a romantic hero, and he became one of the most popular saints. But it was not until the early 1800s that sending Valentine cards became popular, firstly in the UK and shortly after in the USA.

Step 1 Read the text A Love Is In The Air Many Valentine's cards are sent every year with messages of friendship and love. Most cards are sent to good friends, schoolchildren give them to teachers, and lovers tell each other of their neverending love. Some couples take the chance to have a quiet meal together, perhaps in a small, romantic restaurant, maybe even ending with a proposal of marriage, which happily surprises the other guests. Will she say 'yes' or 'no'? It is also a time of gift-giving, often flowers, but different cultures from around the world have different traditions on Valentine's Day. In Taiwan only men give gifts on February 14th. But in Korea it is the opposite; on February 14th women give Valentine chocolate, and on March 14th, known as White Day, men give candy in return. And April 14th is Black Day when people who received no gift go to a Chinese restaurant and eat together to celebrate their single life. Step 2 With B & C correct the mistakes in the sentences below a) Thousands of Valentine's cards are sent every year. c) Teachers often give Valentine cards to schoolchildren. d) When a man proposes he sits on the floor. f) In Taiwan men buy gifts for women on March 14th. g) White day is on May 14th in Korea. h) In Korea many single people go to an Italian restaurant on April 14th. i) Many Korean couples eat black noodles on Black Day.
