A priest called Valentine did not agree, and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When his Emperor Claudius II actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that Valentine be put in prison and killed. At this time Valentine was in love with a young lady. On the night before his death he wrote her a letter which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still used today. So the very first 'valentine' was written by Valentine himself. This story is a legend; it may or may not be true. Nevertheless many years later in the year 496 the christian Pope Gelasius decided that Valentine was a saint, and that St Valentine's Day would be on February 14th, which is thought to be the day when Valentine was killed, and that this day should be a day of love and affection. After this many people thought of Valentine as a romantic hero, and he became one of the most popular saints. But it was not until the early 1800s that sending Valentine cards became popular, firstly in the UK and shortly after in the USA.
