Social Studies Lesson Plan GRADE LEVEL/COURSE: TITLE: High School Social Studies OVERALL OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, students should be able: To introduce students to the history of Christianity. To analyze the time period when Christianity forms other forms of worshiping To analyze the influence of Christianity in History LANGUAGE ARTS/READING BENCHMARKS: LA.A.2.4.7 Analyzes the validity and reliability of primary source information and uses the information appropriately LA.A.2.4.1 Determines the main idea and identifies relevant details, methods of development, and their effectiveness in a variety of types of written materials. Global Connections SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS: for Social Studies for Grade Levels 9-12 COMPETENCY: Standard: The student understands historical chronology and the historical perspective. OBJECTIVE(S): SS.A.1.4.1 understands how ideas and beliefs, decisions, and chance events have been used in the process of writing and interpreting history. SS.A.1.4.2. identifies and understands themes in history that cross scientific, economic, and cultural boundaries. SS.A.1.4.3. evaluates conflicting sources and materials in the interpretation of a historical event or episode. SS.A.1.4.4. uses chronology, sequencing, patterns, and periodization to examine interpretations of an event. COMPETENCY: Standard: The student understands the world in spatial terms. OBJECTIVE(S): SS.B.1.4.4 understands how cultural and technological characteristics can link or divide regions.
SUGGESTED TIME: 50 minutes DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES: 1. KWL Chart: As students are coming into the class, distribute KWL Chart asking the students what they know, what they would like to know, and what they learned. (1 minute) 2. Inform the students that the subject of the class will consist of defining Christianity. Ask the students to specifically fill out only the first two columns of the KWL Chart (2 minutes). 3. Begin by asking the students what differentiates Christianity from other religions. Have a mini-discussion with them where you exchange ideas about the subject. Guide the discussion towards the fact that History plays an important role in the religion. Ask students to name a few examples from history where there is an association with Christianity. Ask students to identify the criterion of Christianity. (7minutes). 4. Distribute Proceed to the lesson. (20 minutes). After the lecture, distribute the reading and writing activity handout for homework. Ask the students to form groups of 3-5 (or proper amount for the size of the class). Ask students to read the article provide, and inform them to answer a few multiple choice and short answer questions. (10 minutes) 5. First, correct the multiple-choice questions, and discuss any errors. Second, discuss the short answer questions in an open class discussion forum. (7 minutes) 6. End the lesson by asking the students to fill out the last column of the KWL chart at home, and have them bring it back for the next lesson. Also, inform students of their research assignment as a five-paragraph essay (no more than 2 pages) on that they will find in the activity handout (3 minutes). ASSESSMENT STRATEGY: MATERIALS/AIDS NEEDED: Multiple Choice Questions and Short Answers. Writing Assignments. KWL Chart, FCAT Reading and Writing Activity, EXTENSION ACTIVITES: Have students write a 5 paragraph essay (no more than 2 pages) on the topic of Christianity and what they learned in class. Have students fill out the last column of the KWL Chart to point out what they have learned.
