Congratulations Congratulations on your purchase of the Lionel #175 Rocket Launcher! Featuring a motorized gantry that positions the rocket on the launching pad, this accessory allows you to relive the early days of America s space program. This classic accessory has been enhanced with an L.C.D. countdown display, smoke, and red L.E.D. s for a more realistic launch. Let the countdown begin! Caution! This accessory features a launching rocket. Be sure to keep clear of the rocket when it is on the launch pad. Children should be supervised by an adult when operating this accessory. #175 Rocket Launcher inventory of parts Base platform Gantry with crane Rocket Controller Smoke fluid Instruction Manual Table of contents Powering your #175 Rocket Launcher 3 Connecting the controller to the #175 Rocket Launcher 4 Installing your #175 Rocket Launcher 4 Adding smoke fluid to your #175 Rocket Launcher 5 Operating your #175 Rocket Launcher 6 Replacing the controller lamp 7 Limited Warranty/Lionel Service 8 The following Lionel marks may be used throughout this instruction manual and are protected under law. A U Powering your #175 Rocket Launcher Your Rocket Launcher will operate best at 15-18 volts (AC). It can be powered through track power with a Lionel Lock-On (available separately, part no. 6-62900) or through an accessory power supply. Follow these steps and refer to Figure 1 as you wire your power supply to the accessory. Caution! You need the ends of the wires to be stripped back 1/4 to 3/8. To strip the wires, use a pair of wire strippers or a sharp knife. Only an adult should perform this task! Always use care when stripping wires. FasTrack users. If you are using an Accessory Power Wire (available separately, 6-12053), slide the quick connectors on the wires over the terminals on the underside of the track. Attach the bare end of the wires to the thumbscrew terminals on the base of the accessory. 1. Attach a wire to one of the thumbscrew terminals on the Rocket Launcher base and connect it to the POWER/A terminal on the power supply or to the #1 position on the Lock-On. Lock-On connections: Press down on the top of the terminal clip so that a metal loop is formed. Slide the bare end of the wire into the exposed loop. Release pressure on the terminal clip, allowing the crimped metal to pinch the end of the wire in the metal loop. Give a little tug on the wire to check if the hold is secure. 2. Attach another wire to the remaining thumbscrew terminal on the Rocket Launcher base and connect it to the COMMON/GROUND/U terminal on the power supply or to the #2 position on the Lock-On. Connecting the controller to the #175 Rocket Launcher Set up your controller to operate the gantry crane and begin the countdown. As illustrated in Figure 2, simply connect the controller with the plugs on the wires. Note! The plugs are keyed to fit together only one way. Figure 2. Controller connection Installing your #175 Rocket Launcher Place the Rocket Launcher on your layout. Choose a location that is approximately 16 x 10, then secure the stamped metal base to your layout by driving two screws (not included) through the holes in the corners. Next, position the gantry crane on its track so that the post in the platform is inserted into the slot at the base of the gantry. Be sure that the side of the gantry with the rounded openings in the platform faces the launch pad. Set up the derrick at the top of the gantry. Carefully raise the mast until it snaps into place. It should now be in a vertical position as illustrated in Figure 4. To lower the mast, gently bend the mast lock away from the base to pull the locking pin out, but be careful not to bend the mast lock excessively. Finally, check that the winch lines are properly threaded through the pulleys. Figure 3. Gantry positioning Caution! To avoid damaging your mast, do not raise it beyond its vertical position. 4 Figure 4. Derrick set up

Adding smoke fluid to your #175 Rocket Launcher Before you operate your Rocket Launcher, be sure to add smoke fluid to the smoke unit. Never operate this accessory without smoke fluid. A small tube of smoke fluid is included. To add the fluid, squeeze the sides and lift up the block house as illustrated in Figure 5. Remove the small plug and add 8-10 drops of smoke fluid. Add several more drops as smoke production decreases. Caution! Never operate this accessory without smoke fluid to avoid damage to the smoke unit. Plug Figure 5. Smoke unit location 5

Operating your #175 Rocket Launcher All systems are Go for launch! Complete these final preparations, then start the countdown. Caution! To prevent damage to the smoke unit, do not operate the Rocket Launcher without smoke fluid. 1. Suspend the rocket from the crane s magnet and press the launching mechanism down until it locks as illustrated in Figure 6. 2. Maneuver the gantry toward the rocket platform using the GANTRY button on the controller. The gantry will move to and from the launching platform for as long as you hold down the GANTRY button. Changes in direction are automatic. 3. Once the rocket is in position, release the GANTRY button to stop the gantry. 4. Turn the cranks to lower the rocket onto the launch pad, then move the gantry back. To identify the cranks, refer to Figure 7. Crank 1 will raise and lower the magnet. Crank 2 will raise and lower the boom. 5. Start the countdown by pressing START on the controller. The countdown will be displayed on the L.C.D. Toward the end of the countdown, the L.E.D. s under the launch pad will turn on to simulate the ignition of the rocket engine. When the L.C.D. screen reads LIFT-OFF, the rocket will launch and smoke will appear around the Figure 6. Repeat the steps above. 6

Replacing the controller lamp During the course of normal operation, the lamp that illuminates controller may require replacement. The replacement lamp is part no. 600-4102-300, available from your authorized Lionel dealer. Show these steps and refer to Figure 8 as you change the bulb. 1. Remove the four screws from the bottom of the controller, then lift away the bottom panel. 2. Remove the four screws from the circuit board, then carefully lift up the circuit board enough to pull the controller buttons back into the control panel. Swing out the back of the circuit board as illustrated in Figure 8. Caution! Be careful when manipulating the circuit board. The soldered connections are fragile. 3. Locate and unscrew the expired bulb at the back of the controller. 4. Replace the lamp with part no. 600-4102-300, then reassemble the controller by following these steps in reverse order.
