C-U-B-S RECYCLE OPENING 4 Cubs Scouts needed for this opening Materials: Posters with C, U, B, S on them with the lines the Cub Scouts say on the back. Remind the Cub Scouts NOT to say Reduce, reuse and recycle until all have said their parts. The boys stand in front of the pack, hold up their cards and say their lines: Cub Scout #1: C stands for Cut Back. Reduce the amount of trash and waste you make. Cub Scout #2: U stands for Use. Use things again instead of throwing them away. Cub Scout #3: B stands for Be Sure. Be sure to recycle whatever you can instead of throwing it in the trash. Cub Scout #4: S stands for Save. Food Chain Activities s Producers Decomposers Instructions: This game can be played in several different stages or levels. Depending on the time available, different levels can be played. Stage 1 Cub Scouts sort cards by the names (these are written on the cards): Producer Decomposer Once cards are sorted, review what producers, consumers and decomposers are. Producer a living thing that makes its own food from light without eating. Green plants and some bacteria are producers. Producers are the base of the food chain. a living thing that eats other living things to survive. It cannot make its own food. Examples reptiles, mammals, insects. Decomposer a living thing that breaks down organic matter. Some bacteria and fungi are decomposers. What decomposers leave behind is used by producers. Examples bacteria, mushrooms, earthworms. Stage 2 In groups, have Cub Scouts create a food chain using the food chain cards. They can create a line (producer, consumer, consumer, decomposer, etc) or a circle. Have them see how many different combinations they can make. Stage 3 For this version, the Cub Scouts create the food chains not with just the cards, but while holding the cards, then as a group physically create as many chains as they can with the cards. They should be able to demonstrate that they see how the food chain works.

Paper, Plastic, Aluminum Game Materials: Playground ball 1 per 20 Cub Scouts Instructions: 1. The boys stand in a circle with one boy in the center. 2. The boy in the middle holds a ball and tosses it to one of the boys standing in the circle. 3. While it s in the air, the boy in the center shouts either Paper!, Plastic!, or Aluminum! 4. The boy who catches the ball must name an object made from paper, plastic, or aluminum in 5 seconds while the other boys count out loud. If the object s name is duplicated, or if the boy can t think of an object, he s out of the circle. 5. When there is only one boy left he takes the place of the boy in the middle of the circle.
Compassion Closing Lead the following discussion with the Cub Scouts: Our Core Value for this month of March is Compassion. Who can tell me what they think Compassion means? [Hopefully Cub Scouts will have some idea of what Compassion means. Integrate as many of their answers as possible while you make sure that they understand that Compassion means being kind and considerate and showing concern for the well-being of others.] How can a Cub Scout have compassion? [Listen to their responses and remind them that Cub Scouts should be looking for ways to be helpful and kind to others as well as to the outdoors. ] Have a great week and think of one way that you can keep being compassionate!
