Romeo and Juliet Final Review Name: Answer the following Questions 1. Why is Romeo so sad? He loves Rosaline who does not love him back in the beginning of the play He becomes exceptionally upset when he learns that the prince has banished him from Varona. He is devastated to hear that Juliet has died believing that it is true. 2. What does Romeo mean when he says, "Oh, dear account! My life is my foe's debt"? When he learns that Juliet is a Capulet (Romeo s enemies) he believes he owes them a debt. 3. Why does Friar Laurence agree to marry Romeo and Juliet? He believes that marrying Romeo and Juliet will bring their fighting families together 4. What punishment did the Prince give Romeo for fighting? Banishment, since Romeo killed Tybalt who would have been executed according to law. 5. Romeo's slaying of Tybalt put Juliet in an awkward position. What did she decide to do? Her family wanted Romeo executed for killing Tybalt and are conspiring to poison him in Mantua. Juliet has to decide to support her husband or to go along with her family. Of course she chooses Romeo.

6. What plans do Friar Laurence and Juliet make? They Plan for Juliet to drink a potion that will make her appear dead to everyone, and when they move her to the family vault, Romeo will meet her there and take her back to Mantua. Where they can live happily ever after. The entire plan hinges on Friar Laurence getting a message to Romeo in Mantua letting him know what is going on. 7. What news does Balthasar bring Romeo? How does Romeo react? In the movie it was Benvolio that brought the news; however, in the play Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet has died He is unaware of the plan. 8. What went wrong with the Friar's plan? Balthasar (or Benvolio in the movie) get to Romeo and tell him that Juliet has died before the messenger, who is quarantined after helping a sick child can get to him. By the time the messenger is able to make it, Romeo has already made his way back to Verona. 9. What are the circumstances of Paris' death? Paris, mourning the death of what he believed to be his future bride, finds Romeo entering the Capulet tomb and mistakenly believes Romeo is entering the tomb to vandalize Tybalt or Juliet s bodies challenges Romeo to a fight and is killed in the process. 10. After she wakes up from being drugged, why does Juliet kill herself with Romeo's dagger? Because Romeo has killed himself with real poison believing that she is really dead.

11. Why does Romeo decide to go to the feast even though he is not invited? He hopes he will get to see Rosaline, but he agrees to go to compare other women to Rosaline in hopes that he will realize that she isn t that special 12. How do Mercutio and Tybalt die? Tybalt kills Mercutio underneath the arm of Romeo while he is trying to break up their fight. Romeo kills Tybalt in retaliation for killing Mercutio 13.Where is the climax of the play? Explain your choice. The moment where Balthazar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead has to be the most climactic point of the play as it sets up the entire resolution of the play. 14.What things in Romeo and Juliet are due to fate, and what effect does that have on our perception of the play? The fact that Romeo and Juliet meet to begin with would be one. The fact that they both fall in love instantly The fact that they are both from families that hate each other The fact that Balthazar beats the messenger to Romeo The fact that despite all of his efforts to break up the fight Tybalt refuses to accept his gestures and kills Mercutio anyway. 15.Who is responsible for Romeo's death? Explain your answer. The Prince for banishing him Capulet and Lady Capulet for forcing Juliet to marry Paris Thus necessitating the plan that horribly backfires.

Friar Laurence for coming up with the plan that horribly backfires. The Nurse for just going along with what Juliet wants and not telling her parents. Romeo for being too impulsive ultimately, he kills himself Juliet for telling the Friar that he either come up with a plan or she is killing herself 16.When and how are the supernatural and/or dreams used in the play? Romeo has a dream that something bad happens at the party Mercutio has a dream and then tells the story about queen Mab basically that whatever the people that she visits love they will dream about. Juliet dreams of Tybalt chasing after Romeo from the grave. Usually the dream leads to an action, Romeo and Mercutio go to the party and Juliet takes the potion. 17.Give at least three examples of the age/youth theme in Romeo and Juliet. What values do the young characters emphasize in the play? What about the older generation? When do young and old characters come into conflict? Over what? Both the Friar and the Nurse are old, yet they make Romeo and Juliet's hasty young marriage possible. Are the Friar and the Nurse on the side of the old or the young? Is Romeo and Juliet's tragedy the fault of the old people or the young people? The values of the old or the values of the young 18.Explain why Romeo and Juliet has stood the test of time and is still being read and performed today. A good story with poetic and beautiful language. Themes of youthful rebellion are timeless.
