GOD MADE THE SKY AND THE CLOUDS (A.1.FALL.3) Biblical Reference Genesis 1:6-8 Key Verse Genesis 1:1 Key Concept God gave me the sky and the clouds as a gift Educational Objectives At the end of the class today, the children will be able to: 1. Name what God created on the second day 2. Explain why the sky and clouds are important 3. Draw a picture of what God created the second day and give thanks for it LIFE APPLICATION Each day God created something new and important for the world. The second day God made the sky and the clouds. Even though God made creation perfect, we, as humans have damaged it. The children in your class should be able to grow in their understanding that we need to take care of nature, especially the atmosphere, so that we enjoy pure, clean air when we breathe. The children will take home something that reminds them of their responsibility to be careful citizens of the creation. Possible Activities and Class Plan Activity Materials Time Opening Prayer Candle 1 minute Craft Table or tray, modeling clay or 10 minutes play doh Bible Story Bible, pictures of clouds, 10 minutes calendar and number 2 Creation Calendar Sheets of paper, crayons, 10 minutes scissors, clothes hangers, yarn or string Snack, prayer, songs Music, guitar 10 minutes Activity Paper, crayons 10 minutes Closing Prayer Candle 1 minute

INSTRUCTIONS Starting in session 3, the children will be building an art project of creation made with play doh or modeling clay. Make sure to get the materials you need before time and enough varieties of colors to be able to make the different elements of creation trees, animals, fruit, and flowers. Place a table or tray in one corner of the room for the creation art project. The children will add to this each week of the trimester. This will serve as a visual reminder of all God has created. You will probably need to help the smaller children with the play doh/modeling clay. As you help them, remind them weekly that when God created the world and everything in it, God didn t have to use his hands or play doh. God is powerful and everything was created when God spoke the words. Opening Prayer Gather children around a candle and explain that we are entering into a special time with God. Encourage the children to hold their hands out in front of them palms up as a sign they are ready to receive what God has for them today. Light the candle Prayer: God we light this candle remembering: you made light, you made us, and you are with us now. Amen (For safety sake, you may wish to extinguish the candle after the prayer) Craft: Prior to the class, gather what you need to make a creation art project. You can use play doh or modeling clay to make the earth and then other materials to make the creation. Cover the table or tray with white paper or even aluminum foil. The children can help to roll out the dough. This will be used to create mountains, valleys, rivers, etc. Bible Story: Make sure to find various illustrations, pictures of the clouds and the sky. Make a collage gluing the images on a piece of big white paper or poster board. Ask the children what it was that God created on the first day. Then, help them to remember that God saw that the light was good, but God wasn t completely satisfied, the world was still incomplete. The second day God separated the waters that were constantly moving, circulating, etc. The waters above became clouds and the waters below became the sea. You can ask the children what things they see in the sky (birds, stars, clouds, planes, etc) Ask them why God made the sky before the earth explain that this allowed God to have a place to put the planets, like the earth, as well as the other things he created. The sky became like a nest where God put the earth and everything in it. Use this time to practice the verse (Genesis 1:1) with the children. Use the illustration of the sky as you teach them the verse.

Creation Calendar: Each child should have a sheet with the number 2 on it (either a photocopy of the one provided in the lesson or one drawn by hand). The children can color it and cut it out. Help the younger ones. Write the name of each child on the back of their number. Make a small hole in the top part of the number, then pass a piece of string or yarn through the hole and tie it to the coat hanger that contains their picture from the previous week. Snack, prayer, songs: Similar to last week, choose songs and snacks that can represent what the children are learning about. Repeat songs they learned last week. Activity and take home sheet: Make a copy of the activity sheet on the following pages. Instruct them to color the water below and the water above. To make clouds you can have pieces of cotton and have them glue them in the waters above. While they are working, talk about the things that we can do to take care of the sky and the air. Explain there are certain things we do that hurt the air we breathe and that the atmosphere which is the earth s roof. When we hurt the earth s roof and the air we breathe we hurt ourselves and the other animals and plants that live on earth. Closing Prayer Gather children around the candle again. Light the candle Prayer: Thank you God for making us, Thank you God for making the world. Amen
