The Book of Genesis 4

The book you have in your hand is a part of the Bible Book Study for Adults Series. As a part of the pastoral/leadership training strategy of Bible Training Centre for Pastors, the Bible Book Studies are written to enable believers to grow and mature in Christ by knowing and obeying His Word. 1 Pet. 3:18; 2 Tim. 3:16-17; Eph. 4:14-16 The Mission of Bible Training Centre for Pastors is to extend basic theological education to the world s untrained pastors and church leaders. We accomplish this mission by partnering with other like-minded organizations, providing those partners with a concept and curriculum for leadership development, which is biblically sound, comprehensive, systematic and affordable. You may be studying a Bible Book Study after finishing one of our training programs, Bible Training Centre for Pastors (BTCP) or Bible Training for Church Leaders (BTCL). If that is the case, you are one of more than 57,000 graduates in 84 countries. If you are a current BTCP or BTCL student, you participate with thousands of other believers in the process of being trainined. In order to inform you of the various training programs, listed below are the details of each curriculum for BTCP, BTCL and BTCL-USA. The common goal of all three programs is a thoroughly equipped servant of Christ, who is able to walk obediently with the Lord Jesus and able to equip others for the work of ministry. We do this by providing basic Bible knowledge, ministry skills, and character development for those being trained. BTCP is focused on training pastors; BTCL and BTCL-USA are focused on training church leaders. BTCP the 10-course curriculum for training pastors Courses Hours Courses Hours 1. Missions/Evang./Discp. 60 Total 400 Trend #1 : God is bringing the world to America s doorstep. Within the multitude of people groups coming to our country, there are scores of pastors and church leaders that lack adequate training for the work of ministry. Trend #2 : Our country is becoming a nation of biblically illiterate Christians. This group consists of those who may be new to the faith, and those who may have been Christians for many years but have not been adequately equipped with the faith once for all delivered to the saints. We are addressing the opportunities and the problems accompanying these two trends by challenging local churches to establish BTCL classes and/or Bible Institutes using the BTCL-USA curriculum. BTCL-USA targets elders, deacons, bible teachers and small group leaders, training them for effective church ministry. Introduction Suggested approach: 1. Read the student material for the Introduction. 2. Lead a discussion of matters raised by the Directed Study Questions. 3. Underscore the following points: #1 Apart from Gen. 1 and 2, we have no record of the absolute beginning of all things. #2 Genesis, as does the rest of the Bible, simply assumes the existence of God. #3 Neither atheistic nor theistic evolution can be reasonably supported from the text of Chapters 1 and 2. #4 Genesis points to a supernatural, sudden creation of all things out of nothing by the fiat (spoken command) of God. #5 As Christians we must have a biblical world view based on God s word, not one resting on science or philosophy based on the natural thinking of the human mind. #6 Science, history, philosophy and the like must be viewed in light of the Bible, not vice versa. 9

The Book of Genesis PASSAGE : Genesis 1:1-25 Lesson #1 KEY VERSE : In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (1:1) Then God said...and it was so (1:9) SUBJECT FOCUS : Creation : The Creator God Main Idea : In creating all things God revealed His greatness. Genesis 1 reveals to us a great deal about God: I. God is positioned above His created order. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (1:1) NOTE: God is pictured as pre-existing before all things and being outside of or above His created order, i.e., He is transcendant (see John 1:1-3; Heb. 1:1-3; Col. 1:15-16; Ps. 33:13; Job 28:24; Is. 66:1). II. God is powerful Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. (1:3) And God made the expanse... (1:7) NOTE : God only had to speak for things to come into existence out of nothing (see Ps. 33:6-9; Heb. 11:1-3). III. God is the Producer of all life Then God said, Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with seed in them, on the earth ; and it was so. (1:11) 10

And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. (1:21) And God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good. (1:25) NOTE : All life (plants, animals, birds, fish, etc.) is sourced in God (see Is. 42:5; cf. Gen. 2:7). IV. God is purposeful Then God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth ; and it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. (1:14-16) And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth. (1:21-22) And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. (1:4) NOTE: Out of that which was unorganized (formless) and void (uninhabited) God created something beneficial with order and 11

The Book of Genesis purpose and then filled each sphere of the created order with that which was appropriate (i.e., birds for the sky, etc.). All that God created was good (attractive, beneficial, fitting, useful, worthwhile). V. God is the Potentate over creation And God called the expanse heaven (1:8) And God called the dry land earth (1:10) And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth. (1:22) NOTE : God evidenced His sovereign Lordship over creation by naming, blessing and commanding. CONCLUSION : Even before He created man, God demonstrated how great He really is and therefore how worthy He is of our worship. He is the Creator God, Elohim, the Mighty One (see Acts 17:23-28). 12
