Storage If correctly stored and kept in the original sealed package the shelf life is at least 2 years. Technical benefits Broad spectrum of activity at low concentrations and therefore particularly economical. As Preventol D 2 is a low-viscosity, colourless liquid which has sufficient solubility in water (2.5 %) and solvents, it is easy to handle and meter. If adequately diluted (max. mg/l), waste water problems are minimized due to good biodegradability. Free of organically bound chlorine, therefore no effect on the AOX value. Application Preventol D 2 is a formaldehydereleasing compound which has a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria, mould fungi and yeasts (see table). It is a versatile preservative for many types of water-based products. To ensure that maximum antimicrobial efficacy is achieved with the lowest possible concentration, Preventol D 2 must be distributed homogeneously in the material to be preserved. The easiest way of doing this is to predissolve the preservative in the make-up water or in alcohol. If there is a need to add the preservative into finished product, effective stirring will be necessary to get the required distribution. Preventol D 2 at 20 C has a water solubility of 2.5 %. Post-treatment of high-viscosity products (e.g. pigment slurries) with Preventol D 2 in most cases is not recommendable. Preventol D 2 is particularly suitable for preserving aqueous coatings which have not been neutralized with ammonia, a substance which reduces the microbicidal effect of the preservative. By increasing the amount of Preventol D 2 this reduction in effect can be counterbalanced: 0.1 % Preventol D 2 is sufficient in the case of 0.1 % of a 25 % ammonia solution. It is best to adjust ph by adding a caustic soda solution. This eliminates the yellowing and unpleasant odour which results when ammonia is used. In contrast to phenolic preservatives, Preventol D 2 does not migrate into the disperse phase. When used in thickeners, it does not cause any additional thickening or gelling. Preventol D 2 should not be added to casein-based products containing more than 1.5 % casein. Electrophoresis baths provide a favourable medium for the growth of slime-forming bacteria and fungi. The results of such microbial activity are the development of an unpleasant odour, the blockage of filters and defects in the paint films. Trials under operational conditions have shown that Preventol D 2 is especially suitable for preventing slime formation in electrophoresis baths thus eliminating the problems referred to above. The use of Preventol D 2 does not generally lead to incompatibility. Nonetheless, the large number of products and applications encountered in practice makes it advisable to carry out compatibility tests and tests on microbiological effectiveness in the laboratory before using the preservative for the first time for a particular product or application. 3/6
