Butterflies to color or decorate

Butterflies are small and fragile, so they have to learn unique ways to protect themselves. The most common ways are through camouflage, mimicry, or poison. Many swallowtails mimic the colors of butterflies that are protected by a bad taste. It can camouflage on beautiful yellow flowers. It lives in the rainforests of South and Central America and uses camouflage by laying on flowers to protect its self. On it s underside are brown eye spots that make them look like a bigger, more dangerous animal. Monarch butterflies migrate from the United States to Mexico every year. If their wings get cold they have to bask in the sun to fly again. The monarch butterfly fly 3,000 miles to Mexico, sometimes 80 miles a day. They stop to drink nectar and then continue their journey. Covers requirement # 3 and #6

Butterfly Crafts and Recipes Butterfly Ballroom Masks ¼ cup flour, plus 2 tablespoons for work area ¼ cup powdered sugar 1 roll refrigerated sugar cookie dough Ready-made vanilla frosting Small pretzel sticks Assorted edible decorations Preheat oven to 350 Fahrenheit. Line a cookie sheet with foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, knead ¼ cup flour and powdered sugar into cookie dough. Cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes. Dust work area with remaining 2 tablespoons of flour and roll out dough about ½ inch thick. Using a 2 to 3 inch heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out 2 hearts per mask. Lay hearts on cookie sheet, overlapping the pointed ends of each heart and press down slightly to shape the dough into one piece. Insert small pretzels into the dough to form the butterfly s antennae. Using a very small cookie cutter, or with the tip of a butter knife, cut out oval-shaped circles in the center of each heart for the eyes. Bake cookies for 12 minutes. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes. Then frost and decorate with assorted candies. Makes 8 to 10. Butterfly Wand 8 to 10 squares vanilla candy coating or almond bark Powdered food coloring (optional, you can also use colored melt-able chocolate) 8 (8-inch) pretzel rods 16 large pretzel twists Assorted decorating sugars or sprinkles Melt candy coating (or melt-able chocolate) according to package directions. Remove from heat and pour into two or three bowls. You may add 2 to 4 drops of food coloring to each bowl. Stir to blend color. Place pretzel rods on foil-lined cookie sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray (about 3 inches apart from each other). These are the bodies of the butterflies. Carefully spoon the warm melted candy coating over each pretzel rod to cover completely. Dip each pretzel twist in the candy coating and place one on each side of the upper half of the pretzel rods and just barely touch one another. These form the butterflies wings. Sprinkle each pretzel creation with decorations (maybe drizzle different colored chocolate or sugars over it). Place cookie sheet in freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to allow to harden. Remove from freezer and carefully take each off to serve. Makes 8. Variation: Take 8 large pretzel rods and dip them in or drizzle them with chocolate and decorate them with sugars, sprinkles, or candies while candy coating or chocolate is still warm. Covers requirements # 8, #9, #10, and #11

Butterfly Crafts and Recipes (continued) Flowers With Nectar 1 package of refrigerated biscuits flower cookie cutter All fruit jam floured surface (optional) Sprinkle lightly with colored sugar or sprinkles on top to add color etc. Take the biscuits out of can and place them on a lightly floured surface. Press down firmly until it is large enough to place the flower cookie cutter on it. Press the cookie cutter firmly through the layers of the biscuits. Bake as directed on the can. When the biscuits are completed, cut them in half. Spread with all fruit jams (blueberry, strawberry, blackberry etc. ) and place the top back on. Participants can also choose to spread the jam on themselves. The flower biscuits add a festive touch to your fairy tea or party Butterfly Cookies 1 package refrigerated sugar cookie dough in a roll 1 can of white frosting food coloring small cups popsicle sticks sprinkles, small candies plastic knives, small paper plates or paper towels Remove the wrapper from the cookie dough and cut in slices. Cut circles in half, turn halves over, pressing round sides together. Make an indentation in middle of straight sides, creating the shape of a butterfly. Bake as directed or until golden brown. Have participants decorate the cookies after they cool with icing. Give each person a cookie on a paper plate or paper towel. Place a couple of spoonfuls of white frosting in a cup. Give a cup of frosting, plastic knife, and a popsicle stick to each child. Have an adult go around and add food coloring to each child s cup according the color they desire. Have each child frost cookies with their own tinted frosting and knife. Older participants may wish to share their tinted colors and make marbled designs. Sometimes younger children tend to lick their fingers and knives while they are creating the cookies, so be careful if they share! Add sprinkles and/or small candies. Enjoy! The back of the food coloring box will assist you in mixing secondary colors, such as orange, purple, etc. Note: Food coloring stains, so I suggest having an adult adding it one drop at a time. It goes far (e.g., 1 drop of red will turn white frosting pink) so use a drop at a time.

Butterfly Crafts and Recipes (continued) Dancing Butterflies transparent plastic material (used typically for plastic tablecloths) available by the yard in purple, yellow or pink. pipe cleaners (black) yarn Cut the plastic material into six inch squares. After the pattern is cut out, pinch the center together and wrap a pipe cleaner around the area to secure the center. Hang a piece of yarn from the center of the butterfly. Attach to the ceiling and watch your butterflies dance. Other Ideas Have Nectar, Lemonade with edible flowers in it, or any fruit juice or fruit-flavored iced tea. Chrysalis or Cocoon Wrap: Divide participants into pairs and give each team a roll of paper towels, toilet paper, or crepe paper. Have the teams race to make a chrysalis out of paper by having one team member wrap the other until the paper is gone. Butterfly Memory Cards: Located on page 11 and 12 of this activity booklet are memory cards to color and cut out. The game is best played two players so they can take turns finding the matches. If you have a large group, you can make several copies of the cards so you can create more than one game.
