Transcription:

John 5 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirtyeight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, Do you want to get well? 7 Sir, the invalid replied, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me. 8 Then Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your mat and walk. 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat. 11 But he replied, The man who made me well said to me, Pick up your mat and walk. 12 So they asked him, Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk? 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you. 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Jesus tells the crippled man to pick up his mat and walk

Craft/Activity: Mats Students will make mats to remind them that Jesus healed a man that was crippled. 1. Felt 2. Yarn 3. Glue 4. Sequins (optional) Materials Directions 1. Cut felt into rectangles (approximately 4 x 5 ) 2. Cut pieces of yarn (approximately 1 ½ long) 3. Let children glue the pieces of yarn to two ends of the felt to look like fringe. 4. Glue sequins to the mat for color (optional). For Discussion As students are gluing the pieces of yarn to their mats, remind them that Jesus healed him simply by telling him to get up and walk. Later Jesus told the man to stop sinning or something worse may happen. Help students realize that sin is worse than being sick or crippled because it makes our heart sick. When Jesus healed the man, he was concerned about the man s physical and spiritual health. Time Needed to Complete: Approximately 15 minutes Memory Verse Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning... 1 Corinthians 15:34

The Bible Times Herald A Special Report on THE HEALING AT THE POOL In Jerusalem, there was a very special pool that disabled people used to go to. Some of the people were blind, lame, or paralyzed. This pool could make the people well. One man had been sitting by the pool for 38 years. He could not walk. Jesus saw the man and asked him, Do you want to get well? Sir, the man said, I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me. Jesus told the man, Get up! Pick up your mat and walk. At once, the man was healed. He picked up his mat and walked. Some Jews that were watching were upset to see the man carrying is mat on the Sabbath. On the Sabbath people were not supposed to work. Carrying a mat was considered work. The Jews wanted to know who told the man to pick up his mat and walk. Later, Jesus saw the man in the temple and told him to stop sinning or something worse may happen to him. The man left and told the Jews that it was Jesus who healed him. For more details, please read in your Bible. QUESTIONS 1. What did Jesus ask the man who could not walk? 2. What did Jesus tell the man to do? 3. What did the man do? 4.
