82 SESSION 23 (A) GOD IS FAITHFULAITHFUL (A) Lesson Plan You will need a CD player and the GOD: Musical Reflections of His Character CD to close this session. INTRODUCTION (5 MINUTES) Faithfulness is a quality that is in short supply in our society. Rather than following the terms of a contract, many people use lawyers to relieve themselves of their obligation. Marriage partners who promise to stay together till death do us part file for divorce. Unfaithfulness causes much pain and trouble in our world. Chapter 24 God Is Faithful and Chapter 29 Transformed by His Majesty What do you think of when you hear the word faithfulness Faithfulness is often attributed to a dog or a humble servant, but rarely to a macho man or political leader. However, how important do you think faithfulness is to society s health Can you think of someone in your life who proved faithful How did that make you feel Every person will fail us at some time. And we will act unfaithfully to others, in spite of our best intentions. There is only One who is completely faithful our gracious Savior. Let s ask the Holy Spirit to teach us how God s perfect faithfulness can impact our lives. Lead the group in prayer. Let s turn to the Video Outline on page 66 in your Study Guide and follow along as Dr. Bright teaches us about God s faithfulness. GROUP DISCUSSION (15 MINUTES) Which of the five major points in today s session is most meaningful to you Dr. Bright stated, God s faithfulness gives us hope. Why do you think this is true In the closing drama scene, Jeff said we sometimes just need to go beyond ourselves to faith that God is in control. How is that possible What difficulties in your life do you need to surrender to God s faithfulness In your Study Guide on page 67, you ll find a condensed version of Chapter 29 from GOD: Discover His Character. Entitled Transformed By His Majesty, this material is relevant to our discussion today as we consider God s faithfulness to us and His ability to change our lives. Take a few minutes to read through this material and be encouraged in your walk with God. CLOSING PRAYER (6 MINUTES) Begin by having your group prayerfully listen, with eyes closed, to God is Faithful on the Musical Reflections CD. Then have concluding prayer. VIDEO TEACHING SEGMENT: GOD IS FAITHFUL (19 MINUTES) The cue graphic on the videotape is Lesson 12 (the video segments are divided by attributes).

SESSION 23 (A) GOD IS FAITHFULAITHFUL (A) Video Outline 83 Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds (Psalm 36:5). O LORD God Almighty! Where is there anyone as mighty as You, LORD Faithfulness is Your very character (Psalm 89:8). 1. Our faithful God helps us in our need. (Isaiah 50:10; Deuteronomy 7:9; 1 Peter 4:19; Psalm 143:1) 2. Our faithful God protects us from temptation and the evil one. (1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Thessalonians 3:3) 3. Our faithful God forgives us when we are unfaithful. (1 John 1:9; 2 Timothy 2:13; Lamentations 3:22,23) 4. Our faithful God purifies us from unrighteousness. (1 Thessalonians 5:23,24; Philippians 1:6; 1 Corinthians 1:9) 5. Our faithful God fulfills His promises. (Joshua 23:14; Hebrews 10:23; Numbers 23:19) Because God is faithful, I will trust Him to always keep His promises. GOD: Discover His Character, Chapter 24 God Is Faithful

84 SESSION 24 (B) GOD IS FAITHFULAITHFUL (B) Lesson Plan REVIEW (5 MINUTES) Lead the group in prayer. In this session we will continue our study of the faithfulness of God. Chapter 25 God Enables Us to Be Faithful In what ways is this study of God s character stretching your understanding of who He is How have you experienced the faithfulness of God CLOSING PRAYER (3 MINUTES) Let s turn to the Life Application step Exalt Your God found on page 72 in your Study Guide. We re going to close our session today by singing the wonderful hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness, followed by a few moments of individual praises for God s faithfulness in our personal lives. Lead the group in the singing of the hymn, followed by a short time of praise and worship. BIBLE STUDY (20 MINUTES) In this session we re going to have the opportunity to study several biblical examples that reveal truths about the faithfulness of God. Turn to page 70 in your Study Guide and we ll study these truths together. VIDEO ILLUSTRATION SEGMENT: FAITHFUL, NO MATTER WHAT (12 MINUTES) LIFE APPLICATION (5 MINUTES) What emotions did you experience as you watched the dramatic portrayal of the father s rescue of his son Dr. Bright said, Although we may be...trapped by life s hardships and struggles, we are never cut off from God and His love for us. What impact does this truth have on you

In what ways is it difficult for you to be faithful to God and His will for your life in your current situation Why d. What can you learn from the example of Paul and Silas

86 SESSION 24 (B) GOD IS FAITHFULAITHFUL (B) Life Application WRITE IT ON YOUR HEART Memorize the following statement and verses. As you encounter situations during this week where you need to remember that God is faithful, claim these promises. Because God is faithful, I will trust Him to always keep His promises. 1 Peter 4:19 If you are suffering according to God s will, keep on doing what is right, and trust yourself to the God who made you, for He will never fail you. 2 Timothy 2:13 If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. EXALT YOUR GOD Worship our faithful Creator by singing the wonderful hymn Great Is Thy Faithfulness. Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be. Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Praise God for the ways He has been faithful to you personally. REFLECT HIS IMAGE Search your heart by answering the following questions: Do people consider me someone they can count on When I say I will do something, do I always come through Go to God with your answers to these questions, and ask Him to help you become a faithful person.

Life Application (continued) 87 COUNT ON GOD The Bible states, Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep His promise (Hebrews 10:23). People, institutions, even churches may fail us, but our faithful God can always be trusted. Is there a specific problem or situation you need to give to Him He is able to strengthen you and help you through any difficulty. OBEY GOD Are you faithful to God Do you love Him more than anything else Jesus says in John 14:23, If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching (NIV). We demonstrate our faithfulness by our obedience. Obey your faithful Lord today. SHARE HIS MAJESTY What insights have you gained about God s faithfulness from this lesson Tell them to a friend or family member and encourage that individual to draw even closer to our faithful heavenly Father.
