Reading Selections for Baptism, Christening, & Naming Ceremonies Matthew 19:13-15 Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. Proverbs 22:1-6 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all. A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it. Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life. In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares, but he who guards his soul stays far from them. Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Ephesians 6:1-4 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" which is the first commandment with a promise "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. And parents, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE by Dorothy Law Nolte Children learn what they live. If a child lives with criticism he learns to condemn. If a child lives with hostility he learns to fight. If a child lives with ridicule he learns to be shy. If a child lives with shame he learns to feel guilt. BUT, If a child lives with tolerance he learns to be patient. If a child lives with encouragement he learns confidence. If a child lives with fairness he learns justice. If a child lives with security he learns to have faith. If a child lives with approval he learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship He learns to find love in the world. LIFE AND LOVE

Dear [Child]. Today we officially welcome you. We wish you long life and much happiness. May you face all challenges that come to you as a person of integrity, May you continue to bring great joy to your parents, your grandparents, family, friends, and to all those who come to know you. May beauty delight you and happiness uplift you, May wonder fulfill you and love surround you. May your step be steady and your arm be strong, May your heart be peaceful and your word be true. May you seek to learn, may you learn to live. May you live to love, and may you love always. A WISH FOR THE CHILD May all your wishes come true May you always do for others, and let others do for you May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung And may you stay forever young May you grow to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth, and see the light that's surrounding you May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong And may you stay forever young May your hands always be busy, and may your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation when he winds of change shift May your heart always be joyful, and my your song always be sung And may you stay forever young. SPIRIT OF THE CHILD Give us the child who lives within - the child who trusts, the child who imagines, the child who sings, the child who receives without reservation, the child who gives without judgment. Give us a child's eyes, that we may receive the beauty and freshness of this day like a sunrise. Give us a child's ears, that we may hear the music of mythical times. Give us a child's heart, that we may be filled with wonder and delight. Give us a child's faith, that we may be cured of our cynicism. Give us the spirit of the child, who is not afraid to need, who is not afraid to love. Traditional Irish Blessing May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand. May God be with you and bless you;

May you see your children's children. May you be poor in misfortune, Rich in blessings, May you know nothing but happiness From this day forward. May the road rise to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home And may the hand of a friend always be near. May green be the grass you walk on, May blue be the skies above you, May pure be the joys that surround you, May true be the hearts that love you. Zuni Indian Prayer Now this is the day. Our child, Into the daylight You will go standing. Preparing for your day. Our child, it is your day, This day. May your road be fulfilled. In your thoughts may we live, May we be the ones whom your thoughts will embrace, May you help us all to finish our roads. Celtic Blessing May the strength of the wind and the light of the sun, The softness of the rain and the mystery of the moon Reach you and fill you. May beauty delight you and happiness uplift you, May wonder fulfill you and love surround you. May your step be steady and your arm be strong, May your heart be peaceful and your word be true. May you seek to learn, may you learn to live, May you live to love, and may you love - always. Traditional Irish Blessing May you always have walls for the winds, A roof for the rain, tea beside the fire, Laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all your heart might desire. May the sun shine all day long, Everything go right, and nothing wrong. May those you love bring love back to you,

And may all the wishes you wish come true. May luck be your friend In whatever you do And may trouble be always A stranger to you. Iona Community Prayer Deep peace of the running wave to you Deep peace of the flowing air to you Deep peace of the quiet earth to you Deep peace of the shining stars to you Deep peace of the Son of Peace to you Omaha Native American Blessing Sun, Moon, Stars, all you that move in the heavens, hear us! Make his/her path smooth, that he/she may reach the brow of the first hill! Winds, Clouds, Rain, Mist, all you that move in the air, hear us! Make his/her path smooth, that he/she may reach the brow of the second hill! Hills, Valleys, Rivers, Lakes, Trees, Grasses, all you of the earth, hear us! Make his/her path smooth, that he/she may reach the brow of the third hill! Birds, great and small, that fly in the air, Animals, great and small, that dwell in the forest, Insects that creep among the grasses and burrow in the ground, hear us! Make his/her path smooth, that he/she may reach the brow of the fourth hill! All you of the heavens, all you of the air, all you of the earth, hear us! Make his/her path smooth, then shall he/she travel beyond the four hills! The Things We've Handed Down Don't know much about you Don't know who you are We've been doing fine without you But, we could only go so far Don't know why you chose us Were you watching from above Is there someone there that knows us Said we'd give you all our love

Will you laugh just like your mother Will you sigh like your old man Will some things skip a generation Like I've heard they often can Are you a poet or a dancer A devil or a clown Or a strange new combination of The things we've handed down I wonder who you'll look like Will your hair fall down and curl Will you be a mama's boy Or daddy's little girl Will you be a sad reminder Of what's been lost along the way Maybe you can help me find her In the things you do and say And these things that we have given you They are not so easily found But you can thank us later For the things we've handed down You may not always be so grateful For the way that you were made Some feature of your father's That you'd gladly sell or trade And one day you may look at us And say that you were cursed But over time that line has been Extremely well rehearsed By our fathers, and their fathers In some old and distant town From places no one here remembers Come the things we've handed down
