Surah 2 Al-Baqarah (The Cow) This Surah is the longest Surat and revealed in Madina. This is an outline of so many orders being discussed in Quran later on. An outline of laws, rules and regulations have been laid down. It is an invitation to the Divine Guidance and all the stories, incidents etc., revolve round this central theme. The Surat declares the Quran to be the Book of Guidance and talk about Believers, disbelievers and hypocrites. The story of Adam s creation and his role on the earth, the story of Ibrahim and the building of the Ka`abah, stories of Prophet Abraham (Allah's peace be upon him) and of the one who woke up after a sleep of hundred years have been related to show that Allah is All-Powerful and life after death has been emphasized. Salat, Fast, Zakat, Hajj have been prescribed for the moral training of the Ummat. drinking, gambling, lending money on interest etc., have been prohibited. the Surah ends with a prayer. Surah 7 Al-A'raf (The Heights) Surah was revealed in the last year of the Holy Prophet's life at Makkah. The principal subject of this surah is "invitation to the Divine Message sent down to Muhammad (p.b.u.h), which is couched in a warning.. The story of Adam has been related with a view to warning his descendants against the evil devices of Satan who is ever ready to mislead them as he did in the case of Adam and Eve. Surah 9 At-Taubah (Repentance) This Surah is known by two names -- At-Taubah and Al-Bara'at. It is called At-Taubah because it enunciates the nature of taubah (repentance) and mentions the conditions of its acceptance.(vv. 102. 118). The second name Bara'at (Release) is taken from the first word of the Surah. This is the only Surah of the Quran to which Bismillah is not prefixed. The series of events that have been discussed in this Surah took place after the Peace Treaty of Hudaibiyah. In continuation of Surah Al-Anfal, this Surah also deals with the problems of peace and war and bases the theme on the Tabuk Expedition. 27

Surah 10 Yunus (Jonah) The Surah takes its name from V. 98, in which there is a reference to Prophet Yunus (Jonah). The name, as usual, is symbolical and does not indicate that the Surah deals with the story of Prophet Jonah. this Surah was revealed at Makkah. The next surah in the juz is Surat Yunus. The surah covers briefly the story of Prophet Yunus, but devotes most of its attention to various subjects, including the stories of other Prophets, the invitation to the Message, admonition and warning. 30
