To access your FVCC email via a web browser: Go to https://mail proxy.fvcc.edu/owa Follow the onscreen instructions. Some things to note: * The above address works off campus on campus you would use https://exchange3.fvcc.edu/owa. * As with any other passworded/secured web site, be *very* careful about accessing the mail server on computers you don't control (e.g. in a library, Internet Cafe, etc.). Too often for comfort such computers have keyloggers or other malware installed to track your activity and/or login ID and password. * We recommend using a mail client (Outlook/Thunderbird/Pegasus/etc.)instead of the web interface unless you have no choice. * On smartphones, the last point applies even more strongly; the web interface works, but it is a royal pain to use on a tiny screen. The built in mail client (or a 3rd party mail client) will work far, far better. To access your FVCC email via a Smart phone or other mobile device: Note that while these instructions are focused on iphones and Droids, you can probably adapt them to other devices that support native Exchange accounts and/or IMAP accounts. WARNING: If you are already using calendar/contacts/email on your handheld, please back up the data *before* adding an FVCC account it is possible to mess up existing data when you add another account to the mix. (Backing up is a good idea anyway there's always the risk of losing or breaking your handheld.) Type of account, native Microsoft Exchange v. IMAP: If your device supports Exchange accounts, this will give you the tightest integration between your handheld and your email/calendars/contacts in your FVCC mail account. However, it also allows the server to enforce some security choices, up to and including forcing a factory reset in the event your phone is stolen or lost. IMAP is a more widely supported protocol; older phones or other devices that don't support native Exchange accounts will likely support IMAP. IMAP is focused on email folders; support for calendar and contact synchronization varies from device to device.

ipad/iphone Exchange account Add an Exchange account, then fill in the fields with the following: Email: _user id_@fvcc.edu Server: mail proxy.fvcc.edu Domain: fvcc Username: user id Description: FVCC Exchange (optional but recommended) Use SSL: On Note that the password may not take at first this is apparently a known problem with iphone/ipad connections. Try again and/or change the password on the server. After tapping Done you may want to tap the Mail Folders to Push button and select which folders you want to access. ipad/iphone IMAP Add an IMAP account, then fill in the fields thus: IMAP Account Information Name: your name Address: _user id_@fvcc.edu Description: FVCC IMAP (optional but recommended) Incoming Mail Server Host Name: mail proxy.fvcc.edu User Name: user id Outgoing Mail Server mail proxy.fvcc.edu For the outgoing server, fill in these fields: Host Name: mail proxy.fvcc.edu User Name: user id Use SSL: ON Authentication: Password Server Port: 587

Note that the password may not take at first this is apparently a known problem with iphone/ipad connections. Keep trying and/or change the password on the server. After tapping Done you may want to tap the Mail Folders to Push button and select which folders you want to access. Droid Exchange When you add an account, start by entering your email address (e.g. jsmith@fvcc.edu), then your password. Toggle the "Send email from this account by default." if you wish. Next, tap the Manual setup button. When asked "What type of account is this?" tap the Exchange button, then enter the following: Server settings Domain\Username: FVCC\_your logon id_ Server: mail proxy.fvcc.edu Use secure connection (SSL): Yes/Checked Accept all SSL certificates: No/unchecked Tap the Next button... After a few moments, you'll get a warning message: * Remote security administration The server mail proxy.fvcc.edu requires that you allow it to remotely control some security features of your phone. Do you wish to finish setting up this account? Exchange accounts allow the server administrator to remotely lock or wipe the mail client; if you don't want to allow that, stop now. Assuming you tap the OK button, fill in the next set of values: Account options Email checking frequency: Automatic (Push) or whichever option you like Amount to synchronize: how much mail do you want synced to the phone? Send email from this account by default: Yes/Checked if you want this to be your default sending account. Notify me when email arrives: Checked or unchecked as you desire. Sync contacts from this account: Checked or unchecked as you desire. Sync calendar from this account: Checked or unchecked as you desire.

Note if you check Notify, you may want to change the notification settings for this account after it is set up. In particular, you can change the ringtone used and set/unset vibration. Tap Next, then give the account a name, e.g. "FVCC Exchange". The next screen is the final authorization for remote control of the phone: Activate device administrator? Email Activating this administrator will allow the application Email to perform the following operations: * Erase all data: Perform a factory reset, deleting all of your data without any confirmation. * Limit password: Restrict the types of password you are allowed to use. * Watch login attempts: Monitor failed attempts to login to the device, to perform some action. * Force lock: Control when device locks, requiring you re enter its password. Enables server specified security policies The server FVCC Exchange requires that you allow it to remotely control some security features of your phone. You can now Activate or Cancel. Note that if you select Cancel, you'll see the above message anytime you try to access the account, until you select Activate (or remove the account info). Droid IMAP General settings Account Name: FVCC IMAP (Optional but recommended) Your name: your name Signature: "sent from my phone" or your name or whatever you want Email check frequency: pick one Default account: check this if you want your sent email to come from this account Notification settings Email notifications: set as you please.
