WELCOME Dear friends, The most famous style of popular music of Argentina is, as we all know, tango, which has enjoyed international fame for a century or so. But a large country such as Argentina has also produced other remarkable musics, and tonight s program invites us to explore them under the expert guidance of pianist and guitarist Hugo Romero. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Argentinean composer and pianist was born in Entre Rios in 1935. He has received numerous awards from institutions including the Asociación de Cronistas del Espectáculo for his album Sin Permiso. He has lectured on Argentinean folk music at the Universidad Nacional de Entre Rios and in Brazil. He has performed in the most important halls throughout Argentina, including the San Martín, Presidente Alvear, and del Globo theaters, the auditoria of the Universidad de Belgrano, Biblioteca Nacional, and Centro Cultural Borges, as well as in Brazil and Europe alone and in collaboration with artists such as Gerardo Gandini, Hilda Herrera, Jorge Navarro, Oscar Alem, Emilio de la Peña, and Leo Masliah. He has also appeared in Argentinean TV. Zarba studied piano and composition at the Conservatorio Alberto Williams in Concordia and in Buenos Aires with Guillermo Graetzer, Gabriel Senanes, Adriana de los Santos, and Fabiana Galante. His latest recording, Salto Grande, was well received by the critics and features an all-star cast of Argentinean jazz and folk musicians. www.guillermozarba.com.ar Guitarist Hugo Romero has appeared in the most important festivals and venues in Argentina, including Teatro Colón, Musicasiempre, Alternativa, Mar del Jazz, Guitarras del Mundo, and Festival Internacional de Tango de Buenos Aires. He was the guitar soloist in the Camerata Bariloche s recording of the Concierto para Bandoneón, Guitarra y Orquesta de Cuerdas by Astor Piazzolla, and has performed and recorded with distinguished artists including Antonio Agri, Bernardo Baraj, Daniel Binelli, Leopoldo Federico, Néstor Marconi, José A. Trelles, Rubén Rada, and Fats Fernández. Romero has also toured Germany, Australia, France, Brazil, Japan and Switzerland. A student of legendary Uruguayan guitarist Abel Carlevaro, and was the director of the Tango area at the Escuela de Música Popular de Avellaneda, where he currently teaches Tango Guitar and Tango Ensemble.
