The Greeting of God GOD SUMMONS US INTO HIS PRESENCE The Call to Worship: Psalm 2:7-9 7 I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter s vessel. WE RESPOND TO GOD S SUMMONS *Hymn of Praise: Trinity Hymnal 731, Doxology *Opening Prayer *Hymn of Praise: Trinity Hymnal 19, Joy to the World! The Lord Is Come GOD DECLARES HIS LAW Reading of the Law Leviticus 19:-8 When you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD, you shall offer it so that you may be accepted. 6 It shall be eaten the same day you offer it or on the day after, and anything left over until the third day shall be burned up with fire. 7 If it is eaten at all on the third day, it is tainted; it will not be accepted, 8 and everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD, and that person shall be cut off from his people. Silent Prayer of Confession WE RESPOND TO GOD S LAW Confession of Sin (Unison): Heavenly Father, our King and God, you have set us apart for yourself. Yet, we run from our holiness! 2
We have treasured sin in our own hearts, harbored hatred in our souls, and pursued our own selfish desires. We have done our good deeds to be seen by others and failed to seek your glory and pleasure. Have mercy on us, Father, for our many sins. Purify our hearts by your Holy Spirit. We repent of our idolatries and return to you, our heavenly King, for mercy, life, and peace. Grant us release from our sins and deeper love and obedience to you. Rule in our hearts by your Holy Spirit. Forgive our sins for Christ Jesus has died for sinners (Rom :6). GOD DECLARES HIS GOSPEL Reading of the Gospel: Revelation 1:-6 and [grace and peace] from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Confession of the Gospel (Unison): Almighty God, we are greatly sinful and unable to save ourselves. But we trust in the Savior you have graciously given: Christ Jesus our Lord. We trust only in the obedience of Christ for our righteousness, the death of Christ for our release from the Law s curse, the resurrection of Christ for our immortality, the ascension of Christ for our reconciliation with you, the rule of Christ for our final victory and peace. We rest on Christ Jesus the Son of God alone for salvation. Amen. Assurance of Pardon: 1 Timothy 2:, 6 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. WE RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL *Hymn of Thanksgiving: Trinity Hymnal 197, Comfort, Comfort Ye My People GOD TEACHES US HIS WORD 3
Reading of the Word of God: Luke 2:22-33 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord ) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 2 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, 4
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic + Church; + universal the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
