AMF SOUNDMOSAIC. SIMPLE. AESTHETIC. EFFICIENT. The newly developed AMF Soundmosaic is a flatpanel (membrane) loudspeaker in a modular ceiling format, working on the principle of wave conversion. This means the mineral fibre ceiling tile itself is the loudspeaker, the oscillation being produced by a module on the reverse of the tile. As a result the ceiling tile looks identical to the rest of the AMF ceiling. AMF Soundmosaic is available in all classic THERMATEX face patterns. The wave converter as the source of oscillation constitutes a significant part of the loud speaker system. To optimise the effect of the sound, the adjoining tiles are integrated and linked to each other by holddown clips. The low weight of the product allows for the system to be installed in both newbuild and retrofit or refurbishments without the need to alter the ceiling grid. The mechanical installation of the Soundmosaic is like that of any AMF mineral fibre ceiling tile. Please refer to the installation instructions for AMF System C. For ideal sound reproduction the installation should be done at least in the second (ideally at least in the third) row from the perimeter. Please avoid the connecting cable resting on the reverse of the ceiling tiles which might give rise to unwanted vibrations. The individual tiles are connected to each other by holddown clips (at least two clips for each tile edge). Consequently, nine AMF ceiling tiles are interconnected to each other in total, i.e. besides the centrally arranged a module a further eight surrounding tiles. Speech intelligibility As a result of the surfaceemitted sound the AMF Soundmosaic offers a high degree of sound quality and speech intelligibility over greater distances. While traditional conical loudspeakers offer higher values in adjacent areas (in combination with greater volume) a flatpanel loudspeaker gives considerable advantages for the total area that is to be exposed to sound. Due to the broad sound emission (vertically close to 180 ) over the entire frequency range, the quantity of loudspeakers required for uniform coverage even for large areas is greatly reduced. Interference at individual frequencies can be a problem with conical loudspeakers in certain room locations (proximity to walls). This problem does not occur with the AMF Soundmosaic due to its special technology. This guarantees a uniform intelligibility irrespective of the position of the listener. SOUND LEVEL The performance test opposite gives a practical performance comparison of the AMF Soundmosaic and a traditional conical loudspeaker. The difference in performance over distance for the same source level of 80 db is clearly evident. For conical loudspeakers the sound energy is concentrated in the immediate area around the point of installation, only for the sound to depreciate quickly over distance. At a distance of 8 metres this means a real drop of approx. 20 db. 80 db 70 db AMF Soundmosaic As a broad comparison, a difference of 10 db means a doubling or halving respectively of sound volume. As a result of this, the installation of conical loudspeakers means their signals are heard as too loud close to the loudspeaker; and as too quiet at some distance. Uniform sound coverage can only be achieved by installing a multitude of loudspeakers. 0 m 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 The sound coverage by a flatpanel loudspeaker (such as the Performance Diagram AMF Soundmosaic) is much more uniform and the depreciation of sound volume over distance is almost linear. Unpleasant peak levels near the source are avoided, without being perceived as too quiet over distance. In comparison with a conventional loudspeaker that is installed in a ceiling the AMF Soundmosaic can be operated at about 10 db less volume for the same perceived sound coverage over the same area. 60 db Conical louspeaker Lay out With an ideal balance of speech intelligibility and an even sound level (the constant distribution of sound intensity in a room) an AMF Soundmosaic can acoustically cover an area of 10 x 10 m. CONNECTION The AMF Soundmosaic can be connected to any standard amplifier (see below); generally up to four modules per amplifier. Should this be insufficient for the desired application, a greater number can be connected through a combination of individual amplifiers. It is important to ensure that the total resistance of elements connected in one channel matches the total resistance of each of the other channels. R R Speakers B A L L Overall, the resistance should not be less than 4Ω and should not exceed. Option 1: one element with per channel Note: It is important that all connections (channels) are operated with the same Ohm value (resistance). By standard, every element features one connection lead. The extension of this lead as well as the connection to the amplifier needs to be done with suitable audio cables (respecting the necessary conduit crosssectional area). These cables are not included in the scope of delivery. Option 2: 4Ω EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENTS The AMF Soundmosaic can be operated with up to 80 watts for short emergency announcements and signal tones without damaging the system. Option 3: Option 4: 16Ω AMPLIFIER / RECEIVER Due to the operation of Soundmosaic, it requires slightly more power than conventional conical loudspeakers. We recommend 20 W of output per channel for continuous operation of the system. The output of a single AMF Soundmosaic can be assumed as 20 W (RMS). RMS output: Root Mean Square output is used as a measure for the comparison of output of loudspeakers and amplifiers with regard to their performance in replaying music with a defined test signal similar to music. Important information: With a permanent signal of more than 30 W the temperature protection inside the module is activated, protecting it from damage. Brief emergency announcements / signal tones can, however, be fed in with considerably more power. Thus, for example, a signal of 50 watts causes an emitted sound source volume of 85 db. 6

Holddown Clips: The required clips for the correct assembly and the sound transmission to adjoining tiles are supplied in sufficient quantity (24 in total).
