IPOPHIL Public Search Patent Search USERS GUIDE Figure 1: Patent Search How to 1. The following are searchable fields Old file number: The application or registration number issued by the office before the deployment of the Industrial Property Automation System (IPAS) on 06 December 2012. File number: The new file number format is broken down into 4 parts: IPOPHIL Public PATENT Search Users Guide_ver3.0_CDPM_09302013.doc Page 1 of 5

PH, which stands for the Philippines. This is fixed. Type of application: This refers to the type of application that can be the subject of search. The search may be for Inventions only, Utility Models only, Industrial Designs only, or any of the three; The third part refers to the year of filing (YYYY). The user can input any year. The fourth part pertains to the number of the file which is automatically assigned when the application is filed with the IPOPHL. Inventor: refers to the person who invented the subject of the application or registration. Owner: This refers to applicant or registrant. The system will search for the name or surname of the patent owner(s). Title: This refers to the heading on the first page of the description. The title refers to the technical feature or features of the invention. Abstract: This refers to the short summary of the disclosure of the invention as contained in the description, claims, and drawings. Locarno Class Code: This is the international classification used for registration of industrial designs. It is comprises a list of classes and subclasses with explanatory notes and an alphabetical list of goods in which industrial designs are incorporated, with an indication of the classes and subclasses into which they fall. The valid format to search in this field is as follows: <Locarno class Code>.; ( take note of the. in between codes) IPOPHIL Public PATENT Search Users Guide_ver3.0_CDPM_09302013.doc Page 2 of 5

IPC Codes. The acronym IPC stands for the International Patent Classification. It is a hierarchical classification system used primarily to classify and search patent documents (patent applications, specifications of granted patents, utility models, etc.) according to the technical fields to which they pertain. It serves as an instrument for an orderly arrangement of the patent documents, a basis for selective dissemination of information, and as basis for investigating the state of the art in given fields of technology. The user may search for more than one IPC. The system will search any word or words that appear in the IPC Section Code, Class Code,Sub Class Code, Group Code and Sub Group Code of the respective fields. The valid format to search in this field is as follows: <section code>.<class code>..<group code>. To search for IPC F01N 1/00, the correct syntax will be F.01.N.1.00. Multiple IPCs can be searched provided it is operated by a white space; Example: F.01.N.1.00 A.01.K.1 * Figure 2: To search for IPC F01N 1/00 IPOPHIL Public PATENT Search Users Guide_ver3.0_CDPM_09302013.doc Page 3 of 5

2. The user may search one or more fields. 3. If more than one field is searched by the user, the fields will be treated as being joined by AND. The search will be narrowed down to those that contain the word indicated in the all the fields being search. In the example below, if the user chooses Any in File No., inputs the word bottle in the field Title and Villanueva in the Owner field, the system will search all patent files (inventions, utility models, and industrial designs with the word bottle in the title, and with Villanueva in the name of the applicant, registrant, or holder. Figure 4 below is an example of a search of the fields Owner and Title. Figure 3 : The system will interpret search request as follows: All patent application filed under Invention, UM and Industrial design with a word bottle in the title AND owned a person or entity with Villanueva as part of the name of the applicant or registrant. 4. The use of the operator or within the field means that the system will search either of the words in that field. The illustration above shows that the user chose Any in the field, encoded bottle in the Title field and Villanueva in the owner field. 5. The valid comparison operators that can be used within each field are: and, or, not 6. Wildcard characters can be used as follows: San* : if the user types this in the owner field, the system will search and display all owners with names beginning with San, such as Santos, Santiago, Sandoval, etc. San??? ; this search will display results that will include owners with their names beginning with San and followed by any three characters, such as Santos, Sandoz 7. The search system will display the first 1000 hits based on their relevance to the request condition(s). ---------oo---------- IPOPHIL Public PATENT Search Users Guide_ver3.0_CDPM_09302013.doc Page 5 of 5
