Northeast African Studies BOOK REVIEW GUIDELINES Editor Lee V. Cassanelli lcassane@sas.upenn.edu Assistant Editor James De Lorenzi jdelorenzi@jjay.cuny.edu Book Review Editor Tim Carmichael carmichaelt@cofc.edu Length: Take the space that you need to complete the best possible review. Rather than focus on a number of words, aim for somewhere in the range of four to seven double-spaced pages, as you deem most appropriate for the book at hand. Justification for shorter or longer reviews should be discussed with the Book Review Editor prior to submission. Style: Head your review according to the Chicago Manual of Style, as follows: Header format: Title Author City, State: Publisher, Year. XXX pp., ISBN CCCC-CCCC. $00.00. Paper/Cloth. Header Example: Achieving Blackness: Race, Nationalism, and Afrocentrism in the Twentieth Century Algernon Austin New York, NY: New York University Press, 2006. 320 pp., ISBN 0814707084. $22.00. Paper. Include your name and affiliation at the end of the review. Double space your document, with an extra space between paragraphs (rather than indenting each one). For transliteration questions see below. For style questions not addressed in these guidelines, follow the Chicago Manual of Style. JOURNALS DIVISION 1405 S. HARRISON RD., STE. 25 EAST LANSING, MI 48823-5245 USA TEL: (517) 355-9543 X 130 FAX: (517) 432-2611 EMAIL: journals@msu.edu www.msupress.msu.edu/ journals/neas Submissions: Within three months of receiving the book, e-mail your completed review in Microsoft Word (or MSWord compatible) format to <carmichaelt@cofc.edu>. Also include the signed Publishing Agreement with your full mailing address. Reviews cannot be forwarded to the Press without the Publishing Agreement. Offprints: Book review authors receive one gratis print copy, mailed to the address provided in their signed Publishing Agreement, and are invited to buy additional print copies at a discount. The Book Review Editor will also forward each review author an electronic offprint (in.pdf format). MSU is an Affirmative-Action, Equal-Opportunity Employer.

Transliteration: General Guidelines If there is an English word for a foreign term, please use it. Foreign terms not found in a standard dictionary (e.g., http://www.merriam-webster.com/) should be italicized and fully transliterated according to the appropriate system (see below). However, italicization and transliteration are not necessary for the following: 1. Foreign words found in a standard dictionary, 2. The names of heads of state and similarly well known individuals, and 3. Well known foreign organizations (e.g., Hamas). Foreign titles should be italicized and transliterated (e.g., däǧǧazmač), unless they can be found in a standard dictionary (e.g., sheikh). Use italics for foreign currency terms. Foreign language quotations, long or short, should not be italicized but should include quotation marks. Transliteration and Orthography: Specific Languages For languages using the Ethiopic (fidäl) script, please follow the system employed by Encyclopaedia Aethiopica: For more detailed guidelines on this system, please see the Encyclopaedia Aethiopica website: < http://www1.uni-hamburg.de/eae>

Transliteration from Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, and Turkish should follow the system established by The International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies: For more detailed guidelines on this system, please see the IJMES website: <http://web.gc.cuny.edu/ijmes/pages/transliteration.html>

Oromo orthography should follow the Qubee standard. Somali orthography should follow the 1972 national standard, except in the case of personal names. These can be anglicized for clarity (i.e, Ali rather than Cali, and Abdi rather than Cabdi ). In addition, the word Somali should be spelt according the standard English usage (not Soomaali). For Epigraphic/Ancient South Arabian, Cushitic, Omotic, and Nilo-Saharan languages, please follow the guidelines established by Encyclopaedia Aethiopica. For more details, see: <http://www1.uni-hamburg.de/eae/>
