M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 9 Old Testament Abraham is Tested Genesis 22:1-18 18 Memory Verse: Last we studied that God kept His promise to Abraham to give him a son. Abraham and Sarah were old but Abraham believed God. They had to wait for God s promise to be fulfilled, but God kept His promise. (Genesis 21:1-5) Nothing is impossible for God. Do you remember how old Abraham was when Isaac was born? (100 years old) Read the Bible READ: Genesis 22:1-18 18 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) By faith, Abraham, at the time of testing, offered Isaac back to God. Acting in faith, he was as ready to return the promised son, his only son. (Hebrews 11:17-19 The Message) Lesson Goals: 1. Understand that God asked Abraham to give Him his son. 2. Understand that Abraham was obedient to God. 3. Recognize that God gave His Son, Jesus. 4. Learn that God wants us to love Him more than anything. Begin With Prayer God decided to test Abraham to see if he really trusted Him. God said to Abraham, Take your only son Isaac, the son you love. Go to the mountain in the land of Moriah. There kill Isaac and offer him as an offering to Me. (Genesis 22:1-2) Can you imagine God saying this? He was trying to see who Abraham loved more Isaac or God. That was a hard test. Let s see what Abraham does. Abraham got up early the next morning and saddled his donkey. He took Isaac and two servants with him. Abraham cut some wood for the sacrifice. Then, they went to the place God had told them to go. On the third day, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, Stay here with the donkey. My son and I will go over there and worship. Then we will come back to you. (Genesis 22:3-4) Abraham took the wood for the sacrifice and gave it to his son to carry. He took the knife and the fire. Abraham and his son went up the mountain together. Isaac said to his father, Father, where is the lamb we need for the sacrifice? Abraham answered, God will give us the lamb for the sacrifice. (Genesis 22:5-8) Finally they came to the place and Abraham built an altar of stones. He laid the wood on the altar. Then, he did a very hard thing. He tied up Isaac and put him on the altar. Abraham was about to kill Isaac when an angel shouted, "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you have respect for God. You have not held back from me your son, your only son." (Genesis 22:9-12) God saw Abraham loved Him most. If you prefer father or mother over me, you don't deserve me. If you prefer son or daughter over me, you don't deserve me. (Matthew 10:37 The Message) God wants us to love Him more than anything or anyone. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 9 Page 2

Abraham is Tested Bible Facts 1. God asked Abraham to give Him his son. 2. Abraham took Isaac to Mt. Moriah. 3. Abraham prepared the sacrifice. 4. God provided a ram for the sacrifice. Abraham looked over and saw a ram caught in the bushes. He used it as a sacrifice on the altar instead of his son, Isaac. Abraham named the place Jehovah-Jirah. That means God will give what is needed. (Genesis 22:13) The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time. The angel said, The Lord says, You did not keep back your son, your only son, from Me. Because you did this, I will make a promise by my own Name: I will bless you and give you many descendants. They will be as many as the stars in the sky and the sand on the shore. This is because you obeyed Me and loved Me above all things. (Genesis 22:15-18) Wow! What a story! Abraham loved God more than anything! He trusted God and knew that He would take care of him and his son. Review 1. What did God ask Abraham to do? (give Him his son) 2. Where did Abraham and Isaac go? (Mt. Moriah) 3. What did Abraham do? (Abraham prepared a sacrifice for God) 4. What did God do? (God provided a ram) Do you know Jesus? This lesson is a picture of how much God loves us too. Just like Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son, God was willing to do this too in fact Jesus did die. He died for all of the bad things that we have done. Why would He do this because He loved us THAT MUCH! John 3:16 says that God loved us so much that He gave His only Son, Jesus, to die in our place. But the best news is that Jesus came back to life three days later! That is why we celebrate Easter! Because He lives, we can have life forever with God if we trust in Jesus and ask Him to come into our hearts. When we pray, Jesus comes into our life and He stays with us forever. The Bible promises that He will NEVER leave us ever. If you would like to have Jesus in your heart, please talk to me about it. It is the best thing you will ever do. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus to die in our place. 3. Ask God to help you love Him most. 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to know God. Application God asked Abraham to give Him his son. Abraham did not hold back. By faith, Abraham, at the time of testing, offered Isaac back to God. Acting in faith, he was as ready to return the promised son, his only son. (Hebrews 11:17-19 The Message) Abraham was obedient to God. God sent His Son, Jesus to die on the cross so that we could be with Him in heaven forever. God loves us and wants us to love Him more than anything. Planning for the next week: Jacob and Esau Genesis 25:21-34; 27:1-45 Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 9 Page 3

Preschool Lesson Read the Bible READ: Genesis 21:1-7 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Sing Father Abraham. Do you remember studying about Abraham? God promised him that he would have a child and his grandchildren would be more than the stars in the sky. We also learned about a visitor that told Abraham that he would have a son. Abraham s wife, Sarah, laughed when she heard the news because she was very old. She was as old or older than your grandmother! Do you know what? Sarah did have a baby! Everyone laughed with joy to hear the news that Sarah had a son. Abraham and Sarah named him Isaac because Isaac means to laugh. Let s all laugh to remember the name. (laugh together) God kept His promise to Abraham. He gave him a son even though he was very old. We can always trust God to keep His promises. Pray and thank God for keeping His promises! Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus. 3. Ask God to help you love Him most. Memory verse for younger children: Abraham offered Isaac back to God. Hebrews 11:17-19 19 NIrV Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 9 Page 4

Learning Activities Memory verse activity Ask the children to write the memory verse on red and green construction paper. Practice the verse. When they have practiced ask them to play Red Light, Green Light in a different way. Have two children stand at the front of the class. One will hold the verse that is written on red construction paper and the other on green construction paper. Each child will stand before the two and begin to say the verse. The child will begin when the Green Light is help up. The will stop when the Red Light is held up. Be sure each child gets to say a few words of the verse. Test your memory Cut out stars and write key words for the story on them. Place the stars on poster board as you tell the story. Let the children retell the story. Taste activity Make an altar out of cheerios and frosting. Talk about how God wants to be first place in our hearts. Bring cookies for a snack. Decorate the cookies with star sprinkles. Think about it Ask the kids if they have ever had a HARD test that they had to take. Explain that God gave Abraham a hard test not one on paper, but one where he had a choice to make to follow God or not to follow God. Talk about what it means to follow God. Talk about what it means to love God more than anything else. Let the kids think of a modern day example of this story. Talk about missionaries who go to other countries to tell people about Jesus. They have to leave their families, learn a new language, eat new food, etc. Touch activity Create a miniature scene of Abraham and Isaac. Run and play Blindfold a child and rearrange some of the furniture. Talk them through the maze. Talk about how hard it is to trust someone when you cannot see where you are going. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants us to trust Him and to love Him. Sing Sing God Loves People More Than Anything, Father Abraham, Nothing is Too Difficult for Thee, Trust and Obey, or another song related to the story. Reach out During class, pray specifically for kids that did not come today. Deliver coloring pages for those who did not attend. Take a couple of children with you. Pray with the child you are visiting. Encourage those who did not come to read the story in the Bible. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 9 Page 5
