That includes a 35-27 Clemson victory over the Terriers on September 10, 2011, just the second game for the senior class of 2014. That was the second of 42 wins for that class, the winningest in Clemson history. That was not an easy victory for the Tigers, who were playing just their second game since Chad Morris became offensive coordinator. Clemson led by just a point at 28-27 in the fourth quarter before Tajh Boyd connected with DeAndre Hopkins for a 17-yard touchdown with 35 seconds gone in the fourth period. The Tigers held the Terriers off the scoreboard the rest of the game and came away with the eightpoint win. That was quite a performance for the Terriers. That Clemson team had over 25 players go on to play in the NFL, the most of any Clemson team in history. It would win the ACC Championship at season s end. Clemson has actually won four in a row in the series. In addition to the 2011 victory, Clemson was led by Woody Dantzler in a 38-14 win in 2001. That game took place the Saturday before the 911 attacks on the World Trade Center. Clemson defeated Wofford 45-10 on September 5, 1981, exactly 34 years ago on Saturday. That was the season opener of Clemson s National Championship season. The score was tied 3-3 at the end of the first period. Wofford s last win in the series took place in 1933, a 14-13 Terriers win in Spartanburg. Wofford also won consecutive games by shutout in 1925 and 1926. The two teams first met in 1896, the first year of Clemson football. The Tigers won that game, 16-0, in Spartanburg in what was just the third game in Clemson football history. Clemson won the second meeting, 21-0, in 1900 in the second game of John Heisman s coaching career at Clemson. Brian Mance Returns to Clemson One of the opposing coaches for Saturday s game is Brian Mance, a 2005 Clemson graduate who played for the Tigers from 1999-2002. Mance is in his first year as cornerbacks coach for the Terriers after serving at Clemson as a player development coach and graduate assistant coach from 2010 to 2012. He worked at North Greenville University the last three years. Mance was a starting defensive back and punt returner for the Tigers. He had an outstanding all-around career and is still tied for seventh in Clemson history in career interceptions with 12. He played 823 snaps as a cornerback in 2002, still the third most for a cornerback in Clemson history. He finished his career with 164 tackles, 23 passes broken up and once had an 88-yard punt return against Georgia Tech that is still the seventh longest in Clemson history. He was a first-team All-ACC selection by the Sporting News in 2002. Wofford Offensive Coordinator Played against Clemson Wofford offensive coordinator Wade Lang played against Clemson 34 years ago on this exact date (September 5, 1981). When the Terriers came to Clemson as an NAIA school in 1981, Lang was a running back. He led Wofford ball carriers that day with 17 carries for 76 yards. He also completed two passes for 30 yards. Lang achieved those 76 yards against a Clemson defense that ranked eighth in the nation in rushing defense that year allowing just 88 yards a game. How good was Lang s rushing total? Only Herschel Walker and Roger Craig had more rushing yards against the Tigers that year. Walker had 28-111 for Georgia against the Tigers in the third game of the season, and Craig had 10-87 in the Orange Bowl for Nebraska against the Tigers. Mike Ayers was an assistant coach at Wofford when Clemson faced the Terriers in 1981. This will be the third time he has faced Clemson as the Terrier s head coach. Other Clemson and Wofford Ties One other player for Wofford that day in 1981 who has a tie to Clemson is Tim Renfrow. He had two kickoff returns for 40 yards, a pass broken up, five tackles and an interception of a Homer Jordan pass. Renfrow is the father of current Clemson wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, a freshman from Myrtle Beach, S.C. *Wofford freshman quarterback Devin Watson is the cousin of Clemson starting quarterback Deshaun Watson. Wofford s Watson is also from Gainesville, Ga. and was a three-year starter at East Hall High School. He ran for 723 yards and passed for 1,755 last season. Wofford snapper Ross Hammond is the nephew of former Clemson All-ACC defensive lineman Vance Hammond. Ross is in his freshman year at Wofford. Vance played for the Tigers from 1987-90 and was part of a Clemson class that finished with a 40-8 record, the second most wins for a senior class in Clemson history. Jerry Richardson, the founder and owner of the Carolina Panthers, is a 1959 graduate of Wofford. His son Mark Richardson, played on Clemson s 1981 National Championship team and is now a member of the school s Board of Trustees. Richardson s Carolina Panthers played their home games in their first season in the NFL at Clemson in 1995. *Two Clemson graduates have been the head coach at Wofford. Jules Carson, a 1914 Clemson graduate, was the head coach at Wofford from 1934-41. Rick Gilstrap, a 1972 Clemson graduate, was the head coach at Woffford from 1985-87. He was the coach before current Terriers mentor Mike Ayers took over in 1988. Clemson Honorary Captains vs. Wofford Clemson will continue its tradition of honorary captains for home games this year. The honorary captains for the season opener against Wofford are Dan Benish and Reggie Pleasant. Benish played for the Tigers from 1979-82. He was a first-team All-ACC selection in 1981 as a junior when he helped the Tigers to the National Championship. He started 11 of the 12 games that year. He was also a starter in 1980 and 1982. WOFFORD 1981-84 and holds the distinction of being the last member of the 1981 National Championship team to play professional football. Pleasant played for the Atlanta Falcons in 1985 and the Tampa Bay Bucs in 1986. He then moved to the CFL where he played for Toronto and Edmonton until he retired in 1997. He played on the Grey Cup Champion team in 1991. He has returned to the Clemson program this year as a team advisor. Clemson Must Defend the Run Clemson will have to defend the run against Wofford. The Terriers have run an option oriented offense for many years and have been very successful. A look to the national statistics at the FCS level shows that Wofford has finished in the top seven in the nation in rushing yards per game each of the last 17 years. Eight times they were second in rushing nationally and were first in 2010 and 2011. Last year the Terriers were third with an average of 296.7 yards per game. Hyatt Slated to Start as True Freshman Clemson true freshman Mitch Hyatt is slated to start at left tackle in the season opener against Wofford. If he does he will be the first true freshman to start the first game of the season at left tackle since 1944 when Phil Prince started the opener against Presbyterian. Prince, who still lives in Clemson, started each of the first seven that year as a true freshman and went on to a celebrated Clemson career as a player and after his playing career was over. In fact he went on to be Clemson University President. Since 1946, only one true freshman has started in the offensive line over the course of the season. That was Barry Richardson in 2004, who did not start the opener, but started seven of the 11 games that year. It is obviously very rare for any true freshman offensive lineman to even play in a game over the course of the season as most are red-shirted. Since 1986, only five true freshmen have played in a game on the offensive line. Richardson had the most playing time with 471 snaps in 2004. This is the highest preseason ranking Clemson has had since 2013 when the program was eighth. Clemson s highest preseason ranking in history is No. 4 in 1984 and 1988. The only other year Clemson was No. 12 in the preseason ranking was 1989. The Tigers finished No. 12 that year. Even though Clemson was the preseason favorite to win the ACC championship by media attending the league s football kickoff in July at Pinehurst, N.C., Dabo Swinney s team is the second highest ranked ACC team in both polls. Florida State, the defending ACC Champion, is 10 th by the AP, two spots ahead of Clemson. The Seminoles were eighth in the preseason USA Today Poll. Ohio State was the unanimous No. 1 selection (61 voters) by the Associated Press, the first school to be unanimous No. 1 in the preseason since the AP first had a preseason poll in 1950. TCU is second, Alabama is third and Baylor is fourth. Michigan State is fifth in the preseason AP poll, the program s highest preseason ranking since 1967. Auburn is ranked sixth, Oregon seventh, Southern California eighth, Georgia ninth and Florida State, who will play at Clemson on November 7, is ranked 10 th. Notre Dame, who will play at Clemson on October 3, is ranked 11 th, Clemson 12 th, UCLA 13 th, LSU 14 th, and Arizona State 15 th. Georgia Tech, who will play at Clemson on October 10, is ranked 16 th, while Mississippi is 17 th, Arkansas is 18 th, Oklahoma is 19 th and Wisconsin is 20 th. Stanford is 21 st, Arizona is 22 nd, Boise State is 23 rd, Missouri is 24 th and Tennessee is 25 th. Clemson is one of 11 schools with the same preseason ranking by the Associated Press and USA Today. That includes the top four schools, Georgia and Notre Dame. This marks the fourth straight year Clemson has been ranked in the preseason top 25 by the Associated Press. Clemson was 14 th in the preseason in 2012 and finished 11 th. Clemson was eighth in the AP preseason poll in 2013 and finished eighth. The Tigers were 16 th in the preseason in 2014 and finished 15 th. Clemson was unranked in 2011 and finished 22 nd. Clemson is the only school in the nation to finish at least the same in the post season AP poll compared to its preseason ranking, each of the last four years. This is the 24 th time (since 1950 when preseason poll started) Clemson has been ranked in the preseason top 25 by the Associated Press. The program has gone on to also finish in the top 25 a total of 13 of those 23 seasons. That includes each of the last three years. Clemson had a five-year run of being ranked in the preseason and the post season top 25 from 1987-91. Clemson has been ranked in 61 of the last 67 polls dating to the 2011 season and including the 2015 preseason poll. Clemson, Alabama, Oregon and Florida State are the only four schools to finish in the top 25 of the AP poll each of the last four years. Clemson in Season Openers Clemson has won 23 of its last 30 season openers. That includes a 10-5 record the last 15 years when Clemson has played its most challenging season-opening games. Clemson has lost four of its last 13 season opening games, but all four were to top 25 teams, three times to Georgia (2002, 2003 and 2014) and in 2008 to Alabama in a game played in Atlanta. Clemson has played eight openers against top 25 teams in the last 16 years after having played just five top 25 teams in opening games between 1936 (first year of the AP poll) and 1999. Clemson has outscored Football Championship Sub-Division teams by a 1146-205 margin, an average victory of 39-7. Clemson has won 28 of the 29 games by at least double digits. The only exception came when Clemson defeated Wofford 35-27 in 2011. Wofford s 27 points are the most by an FCS school against Clemson. Each of the last 14 games against FCS teams have been from the state of South Carolina. The last FCS team from outside the state to play Clemson was Appalachian State in 1997, Clemson s opponent next week, but the Mountaineers are now in the FBS. State W 73-7 +66 Total 1146-205 Mac Lain Wins Richardson Community Service MVP Clemson starting offensive guard Eric Mac Lain received a Jerry Richardson Community MVP Award at the sixth annual South Carolina Coaches for Charity dinner in Columbia, S.C on July 30. Mac Lain was one of six people representing six different South Carolina schools honored at the banquet with the Jerry Richardson Community MVP Award. The award is named after the former Wofford All-American who is the owner of the Carolina Panthers. Mac Lain has been significantly involved in community service work since he came to Clemson in 2011. He recently won a Top Six Award from the Atlantic Coast Conference as one of the top Clemson student athletes from any sport involved in community service. He is also one of the nominees for the Allstate Good Hands Team, a national team of college football players honored for their community service. On the field, Mac Lain has helped the Tigers to 32 wins and three top 15 finishes in the AP and USA Today polls over the last three years. He was named to the preseason All-ACC team selected by the media attending the ACC Football Kickoff at Pinehurst earlier this month and is also a preseason candidate for the Lombardi Award. Five Tigers Named Preseason All-ACC Clemson, the preseason favorite to win the ACC according to the media attending the ACC Football Kickoff in July, led all schools with five selections to the preseason All-ACC Football Team. Clemson led the offense with four selections, as quarterback Deshaun Watson, offensive guard Eric Mac Lain and wide receivers Mike Williams and Artavis Scott were named. Shaq Lawson was Clemson s lone representative on the first team defense. Watson, who was named the preseason ACC Player of the Year, was on 100 of the 163 ballots as the first team quarterback. The sophomore completed 68 percent of his passes last year and threw 14 touchdown passes against just two interceptions. He also accounted for five scores on the ground. Williams had 1,030 yards receiving on 57 receptions last year when he averaged 18 yards per catch, seventh best in the nation among players with at least 50 receptions. Scott was a first-team freshman All-American last year when he had 965 receiving yards and a team best 76 receptions. Both had over 100 receiving yards in the win over Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Mac Lain is the only player on the team who already has an undergraduate degree. The native of Hope Mills, N.C. is a veteran of 39 games at Clemson and had his best game against Oklahoma. Lawson started just one game last year, but had 44 tackles in 295 plays. He added 11 tackles for loss and is the first Clemson player since Anthony Simmons (1995-96) to have at least 10 tackles for loss as a freshman and sophomore. Clemson led the way with five selections to the first team, while Florida State and Virginia Tech had four apiece. Clemson Has 40 Freshmen Clemson begins the season with 40 freshmen on the roster. That includes red-shirt and freshmen in their first year with the program. The last time Clemson had that many freshmen on the roster was 2011 and that was also the last time Clemson won the ACC Championship. Clemson had 42 freshmen on that roster. The 2011 Clemson team finished with a 10-4 record and a top 25 final ranking. Four of those wins were against top 25 teams, the most in one season in school history. Swinney Named to Dodd Preseason Watch List Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney is one of 23 coaches from around the country named to the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation Watch List. According to the release made by the Bobby Dodd Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, the head coaches on the watch list represent programs with the highest ideals of leadership, scholarship and integrity on and off the field the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd s philosophy. Swinney won the award in 2011 when he led Clemson to its first ACC Championship in 20 years and set a school record for wins over top 25 teams in a season with four. He was the first Clemson football coach to be named a national Coach of the Year since Danny Ford in 1981. Other ACC coaches on the 2015 Watch List are Jimbo Fisher of Florida State and Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech. Clemson opponents Brian Kelly of Notre Dame and Steve Spurrier of South Carolina are also on the list. All four of those coaches will face Swinney and the Tigers this year. All but Spurrier will face the Tigers at Clemson s Memorial Stadium. Swinney has led Clemson to a 61-26 record in seven seasons. That includes a 42-11 mark over the last four years. Clemson has won at least 10 games each of the last four years and the 42 victories are a school record for a four-year period. of the last three years. CLEMSON VS. WOFFORD Blanks Returns after Two Torn ACLs One of the bright spots of preseason camp has been the play of junior nickel back/linebacker Travis Blanks. The native of Tallahassee, Fla. is coming off two torn ACL injuries. He suffered the first in the 11 th game of the 2013 season against The Citadel. After sitting out the 2014 season, he suffered the second in the last bowl practice in Orlando prior to last year s Russell Athletic Bowl game against Oklahoma. But, Blanks has come back strong and played well in preseason scrimmages as a starting nickel back on Brent Venables s defense. Blanks was a starter in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. In 2012 as a true freshman he had 51 tackles, seven passes broken up and an interception and was named a second team Freshman All-American. He had a career high eight tackles at Florida State. In 2013 in 11 games, 10 as a starter, he had 35 tackles in 475 plays and had two caused fumbles, one recovered. Wiggins Out for Season Korrin Wiggins, one of just four returning players who started at least six games on Clemson s number-one ranked defense of 2014, suffered a torn ACL during practice in August and will be out for the 2015 season. Wiggins sustained the injury while trying to recover a fumble during a situational scrimmage in Memorial Stadium. The native of Durham, N.C. has not red-shirted previously, and thus will be able to sit out the 2015 season and return as a red-shirt junior in 2016. Wiggins has had 54 tackles, four tackles for loss, four interceptions and seven passes broken up in 25 games over the last two seasons. He had 40 tackles and two interceptions for 44 return yards in 521 snaps last year as a nickel back. He played in all 13 games, six as a starter, when he helped Clemson to a 10-3 record and a No. 15 final ranking in both polls. Wiggins finished the 2014 on a strong note with a 37-yard interception return against Georgia State, four tackles and a pass broken up against South Carolina, and a team high six tackles and a seven-yard interception return against Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Clemson won all three of those games. Final Preseason Scrimmage Review Clemson held its final stadium scrimmage of the preseason on August 20 th and the story of the day was kicker Greg Huegel. Greg Huegel had a big day, said Head Coach Dabo Swinney, who kidded to the media that he now knows how to pronounce his name (Hugh gul). He did not miss today and made a 53-yarder on the last play of the scrimmage. He was 3-8 the last time we scrimmaged in the stadium, but he came back today. I was impressed and as of today he is our starting kicker. He was outstanding all day. A red-shirt freshman from Blythewood, S.C. who was not on the team last year, Huegel made four field goals in four attempts during the scrimmage (36, 48, 21, 42 yards) and made five others before the scrimmage and in last second situations at the end of practice. Swinney also announced that Ammon Lakip, the starting kicker last year, was back in school and at practice, but not participating yet. Swinney said Lakip would be suspended for the first three games of the season. He has a chance to come back for the Notre Dame game on October 3. Watson completed 10-15 passes for 154 yards and two scores to lead the quarterbacks. Gallman had 9-91 rushing and scored on a 50- yard run. Gallman has averaged 6.7 yards per carry and has been the top rusher in all three scrimmages. C.J. Davidson added 9-36 rushing, while Tyson Dye had 8-33 and C.J. Fuller added 10-30 on the ground and had a 16-yard touchdown run. Hunter Renfrow was the top receiver with four receptions for 72 yards, including a 21-yard score from Watson. The receiving numbers were balanced as 11 other players had either one or two receptions. The offense did not commit a turnover all day. Defensively, Jefferie Gibson was the top tackler with seven, while Ben Boulware and Chad Smith had five apiece. Shaq Lawson had three sacks to pace the defense. Eight other players had a tackle for loss. Nine Straight Wins at Death Valley Clemson has nine consecutive home wins, tied for the sixth longest streak in the nation among FBS schools. Alabama and Baylor both have the longest with 16 in a row, followed by Florida State and Boise State at 14 in a row. Clemson nearly ended Florida State s streak in a 23-17 Florida State overtime win last year. Central Florida has the fifth longest home winning streak with 10, while Clemson and Utah State are tied for sixth with nine in a row. Colorado State and Mississippi State have won eight in a row. Clemson s nine-game home winning streak is its longest since the Tigers had a 13-game home winning streak from September 3, 2011 to October 12, 2013. Florida State ended that Clemson home streak. The Tigers are 26-2 at home over the last four years. In terms of overall games, Clemson has a three-game winning streak. That sounds modest, but it is actually tied for the fourth longest in the country among Power Five conference schools. Ohio State has won 13 in a row and TCU eight in a row. Michigan State is third with a four-gamer. Clemson, NC State and Stanford are next at three in a row. Only Three Starters Back on Defense Clemson returns only three starters from the 2014 defense that led the nation in 11 different statistical categories, including total defense, tackles for loss, pass defense and yards/play allowed. This is the fewest returning starters on defense for a season since 1979 when Clemson had just three returning from a 1978 defense that helped Clemson to a no. 6 final ranking in the AP poll and an 11-1 record. But based on history, this Clemson team should not take a defeatist attitude. That 1979 team went on to have quite a season, helping the Tigers to a strong 8-4 record that included wins over Georgia, North Carolina and Notre Dame. That Clemson defense led by All-American Jim Stuckey and all-time leading tackler Bubba Brown, finished the season third in the nation in scoring defense (8.4), seventh in total defense (237.5) and 10 th in rushing defense (117.5). The 237.5 total defense figure for that team was better than the 2015 team had (261). Watson Named to Manning Watch List Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was one of 30 quarterbacks from across the country named to the Manning Award Watch List this summer. The award is presented each year to the top quarterback in college football. It is the only college football award that takes postseason performance into account in the selection. Ten finalists will be named on November 25 and the winner will be announced on January 13. Watson is one of five ACC players on the list. The others are Brad Kaaya of Miami (FL), Justin Thomas of Georgia Tech, Jacoby Brissett of NC State, and Marquise Williams of North Carolina. Kaaya, Brissett and Thomas will play against Clemson this year. Watson played in eight games last year for the Tigers, five as a starter (4-1). The native of Gainesville, Ga. completed 93-137 passes for 1,466 yards and 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions. His 10.7 yards per attempt and 188.7 passing efficiency led the nation among players with at least 125 passes. He was named the National Quarterback of the Week by the Manning Award last year for his performance against North Carolina. Making his first career start, Watson threw six touchdown passes to tie the ACC record and establish a Clemson record for scoring passes in a single game. Watson was also named to the Watch Lists for the O Brien Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year earlier this month. Lawson, Mac Lain Named to Lombardi Watch List Clemson linemen Shaq Lawson and Eric Mac Lain have been named to the 2015 Lombardi Award Watch List. The Lombardi Award is presented each year to a down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Lawson was named to the preseason All-ACC team as a junior. In 2014, he helped Clemson lead the nation in total defense and tackles for loss when he had 44 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He started one game behind All-American Vic Beasley, but actually finished the year with more tackles than Beasley. Mac Lain also made the preseason All-ACC team announced in July. He is also a candidate for the Allstate Good Hands team this year. CLEMSON VS. WOFFORD Lawson Had More Tackles Than Beasley in 2014 Shaq Lawson will finally get his chance to be a starter in 2015. He has been behind consensus All-American Vic Beasley each of the last two years. Beasley was the No. 8 selection of the 2015 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Last year Beasley started 12 of the games and played 557 snaps, while Lawson started just once and played 295 snaps. Despite the difference in playing time, Lawson actually had more tackles than Beasley (44-37). Lawson averaged a tackle for every 6.7 plays, while Beasley averaged one every 15.05 plays. Beasley finished the year with an ACC best 21.5 tackles for loss and was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Lawson had 11 tackles for loss to become the first Clemson player to have double figures in tackles for loss as a freshman and a sophomore since Anthony Simmons did it as a linebacker in 1995-96. While Beasley doubled Lawson s tackle for loss total for the year, the difference on a per play basis was small. Beasley averaged a tackle for loss for every 25.9 plays and Lawson averaged one for every 26.8 plays. Clemson Preseason Pick to Win ACC Clemson was the preseason pick to win the ACC Championship according to media covering the 2015 ACC Kickoff at Pinehurst. This is the eighth time Clemson has been the preseason pick since 1976, the year the league first had a preseason poll. Clemson won the ACC Championship each of the first three times it was the preseason selection (1978, 1987 and 1988). It was also the preseason choice in 1991 and went on to win the title that year. Three times Clemson has been the preseason pick, but did not win the league. Those years were 1989, 2008 and 2013. In 1989 Clemson finished third in the league standings, but went on to have the highest final ranking of any ACC team. Clemson was third in the Atlantic in 2008 and second in 2013. Sophomore Scott Pagano and freshman Christian Wilkins will be strong candidates to move into a starting role at defensive tackle opposite Carlos Watkins and Roderick Byers. Redshirt freshman Jabril Robinson and first-year player Albert Huggins will also be candidates for playing time at the tackle position. Reader is a fourth-year senior who started one game last year, but played 250 plays and had 27 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He is a veteran of 38 games over the last three years. Clemson Has Won Nine of Last 10 Clemson has won nine of its last 10 games and is one of eight teams across the country entering the 2015 season with that kind of streak. Clemson s only loss in its last 10 games last year was at Georgia Tech, 28-6 on November 15. The other schools to win nine of their last 10 to close last season were Boise State, Florida State, Marshall, Oregon, TCU, Michigan State, and Ohio State. Only the Buckeyes were a perfect 10-0 to close the season. The 2014 season was the first time Clemson won nine of its last 10 to close the season since 1990 when Clemson actually won 10 of its last 11. Clemson Has Just One Returning Starter in Offensive Line Clemson has just one returning starter in the offensive line in center Ryan Norton. Norton is actually in his third year starting at that position. The last time Clemson had just one returning starter in the offensive line was 2008 when the Tigers finished 7-6. Clemson has also had one returning starter in the offensive line in 2007 (9-4), 2002 (7-6), 1999 (none, 6-6), 1992 (5-6) and 1985 (6-6). Having a young offensive line can be tough to overcome for most Divison I teams and historically that has been the case at Clemson. Over the last 30 seasons Clemson has had one or no starters returning in the offensive line six times and the combined record is 40-34, a.540 winning percentage. In seasons Clemson has had four or five returning starters in the offensive line over the last 30 years (11 seasons), Clemson is 116-45 for a.720 winning percentage. Eight Tigers Have Degrees Eight current Clemson players already have their undergraduate degrees. The list includes Jim Brown (SN, management), C.J. Clemson Has Led Nation in Tackles for Loss Last Two Years Clemson has led the nation in tackles for loss each of the last two years. The NCAA has kept tackles for loss as a national team stat only since 2006, but Clemson s 131 tackles for loss last year were the most on record. Clemson averaged 10.1 per game. Clemson also led the nation in tackles for loss in 2013 with 123 in 13 games, 9.46 per game. Clemson led the nation in 11 different categories last year, including tackles for loss and pass efficiency defense. It is a unique combination that shows a team s ability to rush the passer and defend in the secondary. Clemson was the first school to lead the nation in both categories in the same year. The Tigers joined Alabama, Florida State and Oregon as the only schools to finish in the top 25 for the fourth straight year. Clemson was ninth by USA Today in 2012 and seventh in 2013. Clemson s No. 15 final ranking in 2014 was its highest ranking of the season. It marked the first time since 2003 and just the eighth time in school history that Clemson s final ranking was its best for the course of the season.
